Just a suggestion. An additional union is helpful on the upper part for servicing the valve later. $5 now could save a headache later.

Nice video. (1) Don't use teflon tape on the thread for union. (2) Use double sweat union valve for these kinds of configuration. It's easier to install and good for avoiding future maintenance headaches.

Thanks, very helpful to see the step by step. Far too late for your project, but you probably should have angled the valve so that the filter screen plug on the opposite and offset side of the pressure adjustment stem could be unscrewed/removed/cleaned.

You might want to have installed that 90 degrees either way. I am dealing with a failed cleanout plug on a unit installed just like that. It is facing the wall. If it were facing either side, I would be able to get it out easier. Great video and comments.

I know you're not supposed to solder around installed threaded connections with teflon tape, as the heat from the solder melts the tape. I thought the same held true for pipe dope. Why not just install a union on top too so next time, when the PRV fails, you don't have to cut it out?

@ycryforu Right you are! After replacing my water heater I "sweated" on two threaded unions and used a flexible steel braided hose. So the next time I have to change the water heater it'll be easy.

Mikester, thanks very much for this very informative video; as a low level DIY-er, your very clear video really made me think that I could do it. In the end although I bought the tools and practiced sweating pipe; I chickened out and used Shark Bites. This was really helpful and very detailed though thanks; so far hasn't leaked in 6 months.

Don't put teflon tape or pipe dope on the union nut treads. The water tight seal is made when the nut is tightened down and it compresses the fitting the tape serves no purpose and won't seal anything. Other than that great job.

BTW, the price for a plumber to replace is almost $500.00 here in Knoxville, TN today. Ours was in some galvanized pipe and it was in rough shape. If it were all copper and brass, I would have done it myself. Ended up hiring a plumber so I could not do any extra damage.

by not wrapping the wrv. you risk the chance of drying out the pipe dope and possibly damaging the wry.

nice job...its good to use unions for things like this though..PRV only have a 5-10 year lifespan depending on your water quality.

Hi Mike, Your supply is really 3/4"? I live on Larson Ct. and I believe my supply is 1". Evidently, the new valve is longer than the original which compensates for the additonal pipe you had to cut out, that is, the pipe that went down into the fittings, correct?
