Homeownership repairs get harder to do as one ages and even worse when you get on a fixed income. I am an older single woman who does DYI by u tube videos. I have some funny stories to tell about some of those attempts. I have been in my home for 30 years. When younger , one does not think about being 68 and not being able to handle a 40’ ladder on slopes🤪 I am blessed to own a home which is paid off. I’m not complaining!

It's wonderful to own your home outright (as we do too) but as we get older the maintenance gets harder to do. We still do it all but I guess the complaints get louder with age, as does the creaking bones and aching muscles. Thanks for watching, we appreciate you Robin!

Boy do I relate. Five years ago I bought an older mobile home. Lots of defects that showed up after. I'm the meantime I have an infected foot I can't walk with and unhappy neighbors. Aging isn't any fun after age 70. Shame on the people who do this but they're everywhere. Lots of love to you both and hope to see you next Friday.

Appreciate the update - and the realities. Homes have expenses, even the best ones. But so disappointing to realize one’s bought into something that will require unreasonable levels of maintenance for a lifetime. I find myself in that same boat.

My cousin had painted aluminum siding, and the house went from white to silver. I agree about the over spray, so easy to take rag wet with solvent and wipe it clean, easier and more effective than you would think.

You and your mrs have had so many with travels, and are lucky to have each other. We live in the country, fresh eggs for breakfast, and yes the house and property always needs work. At the end of the day, we can sit on our deck, having dinner outside, and watch a gorgeous sunset. Yes we maintain our vehicles, and are lucky to be able to do our own work, at least most chores. Thank you for sharing your adventures and journeys, i am always proud to say i was born and raised in Mt.

I know how you feel! I worked with my dad before I left home, and we painted houses together. My youngest brother still does sheetrock and painting in TN. It's hard to see but at 4:52 till 4:54, something flies right above your head. Too fast for a plane. So, I would say it was an asteroid skipping off the atmosphere. It's easier to see on the tv than my computer. But you can still see it if you look hard enough. Don't work too hard. We're fixing to paint the inside of our house, then the trim outside. LOL

I saw the same white fuzzy dot in the video, fun to guess that was a UFO. But if you watch carefully at the end of the streak above the house, it crosses in between the house and the camera. I think that was a reflection in the lens - or a white bit of fluff from a plant.

It's metal siding so I'm assuming everything is sealed up and just cosmetic. Don't feel bad, we replaced out roof and aluminized our soffits in 2021 at a personal cost of $19k. Then last year a small hail storm came through and most people on our block got new roofs paid out in part by their insurance. We should've waited.

Homeownership and the maintenance that goes with it. Back in the 1960s my Dad sandblasted our house and took the paint completely off, I think it lasted another 25 years except for the wood windows that needed repainting every few years. Now all I need to worry about is my old van and a can of Rustoleum does it for me. 🤣

For taking the overspray paint from the glass, get some of those plastic scrapers from the auto body shop. Use them to scrape the still soft paint from the glass about an hour or so after you spray. wipe the blade off with rags after each pass. if you nick the plastic edge, toss it and get a new one. If you can't scrape when it's fresh, scrape the next day with a steel razor blade scraper while it is not fully cured.

30+ years ago, the EPA mandated a change in the primer formulation used in domestic auto production. Many makes, foreign and domestic, had plants here -- and they didn't do any long-term testing of the new product/methods. Turned out the adhesion between the primer coat and finish coats was poor, so many vehicles developed a familiar scabbed look. Fortunately a product was identified that could overcoat the original primer and allow flake-free top coats. As you point out, however, it was necessary to sandblast (with walnut shells) first. Before replacing the siding, I'd check with autobody experts on products and costs -- experience has a way of bringing down costs, if you can wait that long!

That looks like 5 inch Dutch lap. Is it steel or Aluminum? Either way don't use latex paint. Use a good grade oil based paint like Benjamin Moore. That paint takes more work to apply it and that is why I only paint a portion of my house one year and another portion another year. The original paint should be a baked on finish. It's a good thing most of your house has a roof overhang. I persuaded customers to have us install an overhang on gable ends where the roof ended. During a remodel and getting the roof done, It really wasn't a huge deal to lay some flats from the first rafter inside over a notch in the end rafter and create an overhang gaining good weather protection for the side of the house. I assume you have the Louisiana Pacific siding. Yeah, that was a problem. Most of it is gone now. Too bad the previous owner took the money and ran. It really should have been disclosed on Form 17 I think it is around these parts. I recall that LP siding was a specifically asked question, (like if you had lead paint), printed on the form. Of course sellers can simply say choose not to disclose or don't know. You got the prep work right and you can go further giving the house a quick scrub of TSP using a car wash brush. On tough paint jobs. We'd get KILZ oil based int./ext. primer. KILZ has good adhesion and provides a good base for paint. I never cared for the sprayer. I used a 24" wide 3/4 knap Wooster roller out of a big Wooster paint pan. Best with two people but you load up a 5x5 area, then either you or your helper get up on a ladder or whatever and spread it out with your good quality 4" brush. Using a brush, in my opinion, created a better adhesion to the house because you are physically working the paint into the house surface instead of spraying over and covering with no physical action to the house. It goes darned near as fast as a sprayer without the mess. If you do spray, have your helper hold a big piece of cardboard or door skin wherever you want to prevent overspray. Would have worked great along the chimney, just hold over the brick against the house and no cleanup will be needed. I have a ton of projects to do here myself. I think next spring will be the time for this place. Anyway, the homestead is looking nice and peaceful, I'm sure just the way you like it. Take care.

@gonagain There was a time when salespeople for aluminum and other sidings would show up and convince homeowners their original, often nice cedar siding was bad, and they would cover it. We did removals a couple times and found really nice cedar under it that didn't need too many repairs. Another nice thing is that the old nicer window trim was still intact. Start in the back of the house and make your plan forward from there. The southern facing side usually has the most weathering.

Take it one day at a time & try not to stress. Rick, my phone not only got Hacked, but it broke last Saturday night which got me canceled for my back surgery for Monday. They got me into the main hospital instead of the private clinic, and as of Wednesday I've had my procedure. Now, I can't walk at all and am in Major Pain way above what I was dealing with. I trust I will heal soon. I haven't forgotten your question about the property search, so I will send an email and bring you up to speed.
