I don't build houses but I love being an architect. Let's talk about home servers!
Next video I'll be setting up a basic home server with this as a base.

Yo man refreshing to see a guy explaining clearly with a nice train of thought! And very pedagogic. I would like to see a video where we basically set up "poor-mans" AWS-offering or similar, i.e host a DB, website and maybe S3 and how to run it on your own wifi and expose it to the public. Maybe there needs to be some network config + NAT to get some isolation but yeah if I knew this I wouldn't ask hehe. End goal would be a public IP that people can go to and they would get served my web page from a home server.

Im new to building in a linux environment, but i do appreciate your help, in site on my build with your sensible advice. I bought a dell XC730xd 18 bay server, 12 LFF- 10TB in front 4 LFF- 14TB inside, 2 SFF 600GB SAS in rear, a 128gb bootable SATA-DOM, 2-NVME, PCI ADAPTERS- 512GB GEN4 SAMSUNG EVO 990’S. One for cache, swap, and container storage. The other for metadata. 512gb ddr4-2666mhz. Dual redundant PS_ 1200watt Platinum. File, media, music, personal data, services. I am also wanting to setup mine craft docker for my grand kids, with opensense for both the gigabit and 10gb network management. Samba/NFS shares. 2- HP Nvidia Quadro 6000 6GB GDDR5 GPU’s, for Transcoding. Dual E5-2697 xeon cpu’s 18c-36 thrd’s 3.6ghz.

That's a serious operation. Haven't messed around with SAS drives before but I have seen high density drives available for relatively cheap on places like eBay which peaks my interest. SSDs for caching are awesome to set up, and it's crazy you're running dual Xeons with dual PSUs hahaha definitely more intense than what I'm running at my place. Thanks for your support!

@@hoff._world going by your accent I am guessing you're a fellow Aussie. Facebook Marketplace is your friend. A lot of IT folks that are able to scam decommissioned servers will sell them on FB. Some people are a bit ambitious with pricing but every now and then someone gets sick of their PowerEdge T430 taking up space and they flog it off for $150AUD

Maybe I'll make a video about it sometime :) Have a look at reddit's r/unixporn subreddit (the name is suspicious I know but it's about riced linux I swear)

I'm using my old desktop (Ryzen 5 3600X) as a Jellyfin server (ubuntu based) coupled with 80 TB of storage and a GTX 1080 for transcoding because I have about 5 people using it with many different devices and Jellyfin supports direct play poorly on iOS based devices. But I hope I can replace it soon with the new AMD APUs or a cheap Intel CPU. My 3600X is just not strong enough to transcode two streams at the same time because it completely lacks hardware acceleration.

Adding a GPU for transcoding is a great option that I didn't mention in the video. It is very interesting to hear about your setup! 80 TB makes a very spicy media server indeed. I'm guessing you're quite the archivist?

@@hoff._world Well, I need half of that storage for the backup because searching for all that and downloading it takes ages and I really don't want to lose anything. It was also one of the reasons why I do this. Movies on streaming services just disappearing made me very mad. Or some series just had one season and all other missing or even the first few episodes missing (only god knows why xD) Or on Disney Plus and Netflix there were some movies not available in english or my language but instead something like french, spanish or italian. Very frustrating... Yes, my collection grew now to more than 1000 movies and 150 series (+ some music) 99% of them with a imdb rating around 7 out of 10 or higher :D So I'm just collecting the best stuff. Btw, I pay about $40 a year for the filehoster. So this comes (without considering the cost for power and storage) much cheaper than having 2-3 subs from multiple streaming services. Hosting is a hobby of me and tinkering around with hardware also. So I don't mind the costs of the server itself :) All my friends and family are also happy with my service and use it daily. That alone is worth the price to keep it running.

That's awesome dude. Yeah agreed the only thing better than serving stuff to yourself is serving it to family and friends too :) I always admire people with collections like that because if I tried one that large it would become far too messy far too quickly...

Both my music and my movie collections are over 56tb. They are organized by genre, yr, Album / Movie series, Tv show. I have been doing this since 1980, on my first apple as a junior in HS. My 1sr 10mb scsi hd was the same size znd heavier than a cinder block. LOL! Longtime ago
