The Glass Link is a residence designed to meet the needs of a growing family that values entertainment, connection with nature, and Japanese design. This elegant and harmonious house was conceived as a result of a collaborative effort between the design team at Scott|Edwards Architecture and the family, aiming to sensibly express the family's lifestyle and celebrate the natural features of the site. The project also incorporated experimental design approaches, resulting in a unique and appealing residence.
The site where the residence is situated is surrounded by forests to the north and south, and the design was conceived to unite these two environments, creating an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility.
One of the main features of the Glass Link is its central glass pavilion with a floating roof, which is enveloped by floor-to-ceiling retractable glass doors, totaling 48 feet in length on both sides. This feature provides a direct connection to nature and enables a seamless interaction between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The design of the Glass Link follows the tradition of Japanese and Pacific Northwest design, with a clearly expressed structure in column and beam construction, forming an open skeleton. This structure provides an open and welcoming environment while delineating the functional spaces of the residence. The house is divided into three main components: a tranquil wing, an active wing, and a great room.
The active wing of the house houses a series of spaces intended for entertainment and activities, such as an exercise room with a sauna, a media room, guest rooms, a wine cellar, and even a secret whiskey room accessible only through a hidden lock in a cabinet. These spaces were designed to meet the family's needs and provide intimate and cozy environments for special moments. Additionally, a 12-foot-tall board-formed concrete wall creates a small private outdoor patio, separating it from the surroundings and providing a peaceful and secluded space.
On the other hand, the tranquil wing of the Glass Link is dedicated to privacy and rest. It houses the master suite and the children's bedroom, offering a serene and comfortable environment. The master bedroom, in particular, was designed to provide a framed view of the wooded backyard landscape, creating a sense of connection with nature from within the residence.
The heart of the Glass Link is the great room, located between the two wings of the house. This central area, comprised of the kitchen, living room, and dining room, is surrounded by 48-foot-long retractable glass doors on both sides.
