Wow what a terrific project! Congratualtions. I really enjoyed seeing your handiwork and can appreciate all of the manhours that went into building the set. Tubes are still alive --and that warm sound is unbeatable! Thanks for sharing! de N6QW

Amazing radio. This is what radio is all about. I can't wait to get some of my grand dads boat anchors back on the air!

@984francis I did most of the chassis layout and all the schematic by hand, these have not been scanned as of yet. Even though I'm proficient with Autocad, I wanted to experience what it would have been like "back in the day". The design is basically a conglomeration of the typical individual stage circuits in the 1948 Amateur handbook. There are several good projects in the 1948 book also. In my opinion the handbooks from the 40's seem to be the best reading for this sort of project.

I built similar receivers back in the '60s and wish I still had them. Those I didn't sell were consumed by fire when my shack was destroyed in '76. You did a magnificent job on this 'labor of love' and an outstanding job of presenting it as well. I assume by now you have the IF gain problem corrected so the AGC is working correctly. 73, de Mick - WB4LSS

So you built this from the 1948 ARRL handbook? Out-f'ing-standing! I build really simple stuff like guitar amps, with comp limiters, & multi channel MOSFET switching effects loops, & lots of analog audio signal processing & a little DSP. I just passed the Technician & General Class exams last week. I have loads of spare tubes, transformers and I do still have some larger variable caps than those floating around somewhere in my collection of crap. I have some military power transformers that I thought I would never use due to the high voltages, but I found some Telefunken EL156s, so, those might wind up doing an audio project too. I think I have a massive 1.8KV CT that I may multiply the voltage on & use with some 4-400s for a HF linear amp. I use PSPICE & SPICE so much I forgot all the old differential equations for LCR AC circuits. I'll bone up on those, study all the filters, antenna traps, more rules regulations, practices, etc & go get my Extra Class in a couple of weeks. I may try an ungrounded common grid design Xmitter. I hate those in guitar amps, so I might see if I like them any better in something else.

this is a great radio, good work, I feel the agc should be clipped as early as possible, to reduce gain, maybe even on the antenna tuner.

Fantastic work! I'm thinking about getting back into Amateur Radio, but am wondering about what to do if I find out that the tubes in my old rigs...(SB-30n and KW 520 SE), are blown. 73's to all.

Today's EE graduates wouldn't have a clue how to design and build anything with vacuum tubes! I doubt they could identify the internal parts of a vacuum tube!

@mylowproject They're all hand drawn, I haven't scanned them yet. I made some changes to the design while it was on the bench which haven't made it from the note book to the schematic yet. Most of the overall schematic is made up of the typical circuits in the 1948 Amateur handbook.

I want to play with it's knobs! FB Project. I wonder what (if any) dial printer software you used. Those ganged tuning caps are band-switched in as you go down in freq I assume. Sounds sweet. Does the dial glow with at least some #47 bulbs? 73 DE WW2W Tony
@PaulHigginbothamSr

I personally thought one tuning cap was for the local oscillator, one was for the IF, and one was for the antenna, so I would not assume changing bands turning down would be cause or use of falling frequency tony.
