For me, MCM is 1950s design and retro is 1960s-1990s. I think it is important to differentiate as society was influenced in different ways in the 50s as compared to later decades and furnishings reflected that. I do like that you are showing both MCM and retro influenced products from Ikea as well as your Sohnne chair which is stunning!

@HomeByMon2 ай бұрын
@@Jackwu555 such a great choice! 🥰 I would maybe go with something simple such as the the SIGTRYGG chair or if you don't likd that one maybe the LISBON chair. If you want something more interesting maybe the VOXLÖV chair or the NAKANAS chair would also look good on a circle table. For the rug, I don't know your space and preferences, but a safe option for me is always the LOHALS rug or the STOCKHOLM rug 🥰 Hope I helped ✨

IKEA calls the Sotenäs an “armchair,” so it’s not like you’re wrong, but … neither that or the Dyvlinge has arms. Lounge chairs? Anyhoo, enjoyed the vid, as always.
@davedixon21673 ай бұрын
Hi Mon - I love your videos, Ikea, and MCM, so at first I almost lost my mind when the Eames lounger came onscreen - thinking that Ikea had introduced a dupe themselves. Do you have any idea about Sohnne's quality/longevity? There are SO MANY dupes on the market at about that 800-1100 US price point, I don't want to waste money chasing knockoffs...

As designers, we don’t share the enthusiasm for blatant rip-offs. If you understood the effort that goes into creating something original, you might reconsider celebrating these copies. Inspiration is one thing, but directly copying is another. While IKEA makes affordable furniture accessible, it also has a history of design theft, which contributes to market saturation. As a result, fewer people value the original items, and demand drops. Instead of celebrating corporations profiting off copies, let’s support the hard-working creators behind unique designs.
@HomeByMon2 ай бұрын
@@scandinavian_sauna oh yes, I'm absolutely all for buying the original, if you have the money for it 😅 I completely understand your point of view, but, so many people can not afford these designer pieces, I mean I could buy a car with the money I would spend for the original Eames chair 😞 and it's kinda sad that we live in a world where you have to be rich to have nice things... Anyways, I understand you and I hope one day I could buy myself the original chair - it's my dream to own one for sure ✨
@scandinavian_sauna2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your reply and for sharing your opinion.😊 It's commendable that IKEA offers affordable designs for the masses, but the fact that some classic designs are expensive doesn't justify copying them. They can still choose to be inspired and create something similar without it being a rip-off. It's not just classic designs being copied, but also new designs from relatively unknown designers and brands. With the budget IKEA has behind their design teams, they have the capacity to innovate. Copying like this feels both rude and lazy.
@leamubiu26 күн бұрын
@@scandinavian_sauna I understand the frustration of being copied. Obviously IKEA doesn’t want to innovate as much as give access to aspirational pieces and interiors, to as many people as possible. If those designers really want to stake a claim on the market of the lower economic classes, they could create low-cost lines of their own. But the reality is that they cater to people who can afford the best quality, and their manufacturing process and supply lines reflect that, as well as their pricing. They knowingly “snub” the vast majority of the population, and that’s fine -but no one should be surprised that someone (here IKEA) would try and fill the gap. Less affluent people can only imitate the appearance, but cannot get the same finishes and longevity. Fancy people will still purchase the genuine article rather than an IKEA dupe (or from white-label shops), because that’s how social signaling, exclusivity, and luxury work. In short, artists and IKEA are simply not on the same playing field. IKEA probably SHOULD pay a commission to original artists to be really ethical (on this one front; however there’s so much more wrong otherwise), but the logistics behind that (and of course the money it takes) make it unsurprising that that doesn’t happen unless a claim is made and validated through courts. Meanwhile let’s not shame the penniless folk who just want to enjoy good design in their homes, or the small KZbinrs who help them along.
