Looks amazing! I love how you get after it and show us how you figure it out at times. Don’t put off the yard another year. I had a horrible yard of compacted clay with sparse weeds. I rented a walk behind aerator to loosen things up. Then simply spread fertilizer and a ton of seed. I chose to do it a week before a rainy week and Mother Nature took care of the watering.

Nice job. Outdoor fabric staples help the fabric from not moving.

You're talking about "the wrong shovel" but I feel like you've probably got the right one. I've got that hard clay soil like it appears you've got and the only shovel I have luck with is a pointed one like you're using here.

Get a round pole and plant it in the middle. Then tie a rope loosely around it. Now you can get a perfect circle.

Did you have to wet the ground before you used the cultivator? Or you just did it with dry ground?

I've been waiting since July 21 for a $350 refund. I made an online order and then cancelled 2 mi. later. After countless hours spent on the phone with customer service, I was told I would receive my refund in Nov. Still no refund!!

Now just don't put a bunch of garbage out into the yard and it should stay like this pretty much all by itself. ;-)
