Have you never been so overwhelmed with responsibility placed on your shoulders at a young age that you break down, and give up??? He's been paying the price for a decade, he's admitted to this. And trying to work his way back ever since. God you people are obtuse. Dense and unable to comprehend their stories. Just sit there and judge, because this could never happen to you!! T. Kemp yup. Same thing happened to me, when I had organ failure (NOT due to substance abuse or anything I did to myself). Became homeless and lost everything so fast. Most people are one catastrophe away from homelessness. And it's hard to get back what you've lost, for most. I was lucky. Most are not.

Again, there are people in the country that barely speak english and yet they work hard and buy houses even.. They have a serious setback, but they aren't all pouty about anything.. you just gotta want to do things, and then things happen for you. If you like the relative freedom of being home-free more, then you get to be home-free all you like, and you might as well own it. And if it ever happens to me, well it's one hundred percent my fault, because I know that people with far more setbacks are making it.

That guy makes sick! I can't stand his mentality. If people take their time to make a sandwich for your homeless ass it's because that's what they have to give you and you should be grateful. The world does not owe you anything. I used to be homeless and I had to go to shelter and put up with all that shit. The farting, the stinky feet, the overcrowding and the shitty treatment from shelter employees. It wasn't easy and there were times when I thought I couldn't bear with it, because anything can happen to you in there. It's not necessarily a place of safety as they often claim. There are all kinds of crazy people living in shelters, jail birds (I'm talking hard-core criminals like murderers), people suffering from mental illness, drug addicts - you name it. I must say though that some are better managed than others. Anyway, I knew that I was only gonna be in the shelter for a short time. I used that all that as motivation to get out and ahead. I used that time productively. I got myself a job and within 3 months I had enough money in my savings to get an apartment and a car. I am so happy I am typing this from my new laptop in the comfort of my own home. Some people take life for granted. You can lose your family and home right in this minute and find yourself homeless so don't look at homeless people like they are nobody. We all have problems, it's not our place to judge but we should help one another instead. To think that 6 months ago I was sleeping outside and now I sleep in a warm and clean bed. I couldn't be more grateful for this new lease on life. Sometimes I beat myself up for letting things get that bad in my life but you know what not everything is in my control and I am only 26 I had to go through that to learn a lesson. I should cut myself some slack. I saw 30 and 40+ year old men on the streets who were just hanging on by a thread, barely hanging on and they are still out there still hanging. People have serious problems out there and they use drugs to numb themselves and when family give up on you some people see no reason to get help. I know some people think "but if I was in that situation I would do this and that and blah blah blah", but you know what when you're down there it's easier said than done, because you have to deal with everyday folk judging you because you don't look like yourself anymore. That's right! when you lose everything and land up on the street you gonna start looking like the street folk. The stress will permeate your life and wear you down. People will look at you funny. They will judge you. Yell things like "get a job!" or think you're lazy when really all you need is a hand up. Some people will feel sorry and hand you a dollar, which will be helpful but only for that moment. But any help is good, right? Wrong! on the street you meet all kinds of people and for sure people who abuse substances will be among those people. They will help you get drugs if you're fickle. You should always stay away from these people if you want to get out of the street and back on your feet no matter how stressful your situation gets. The help you should look for is not the one that facilitates your life on the street or in the shelter, but one that will get you out. Make use of those facilities to get yourself a job, be proactive, get up and get moving. Talk to people who will listen. Don't beg and don't make them feel sorry for you. Tell them how much you wanna get off the streets and what you're doing to make that happen. You'll be amazed at how people are moved to help when they see you try to help yourself. People are usually impressed by that. People are put off by panhandlers. I don't want people begging, it's disconcerting. Some people do it for a living. It's funny, they make up all sorts of stories and sit at the same spots and tell these stories to the same people. They don't really distinguish people's faces. They will run into you the next day and tell you the same story they told you the last time. Anyway, peace everyone.

On a good day she makes *€100* or a bad day *€15* On average that will calculate the sum of: *€57.50 per day* Multiply that by one week *€399.50* That is a decent income Multiply that by *four weeks* Totals *€1598.00* My god, that is good money... That is income & working wages each week/month. Usually a studio flat in a poor area costs approximately *€400-500. Per month* One bedroom flat rents at *€400 - €800 per month,* depending on conditions! But she can/could afford to live in payed accommodation via pan handling! I had no idea pan handlers make this amount of money? This pays more than the minimum wages!

being homeless and being jobless are two different things. There is nothing wrong with being homeless but if you expect society to give you something, you have to in turn be willing to give something back. Normally this would be a job to pay taxes. I used to be homeless and I am about to be homeless here in 2 months. (by choice). That doesn't mean I am going to sit around all day expecting hand outs. I wouldn't even take it if it was offered. So long as you blame the outside world for your problems you will forever be down. You have to make the most of what you have and do everything in your power to better yourself. If you don't work you can't be part of the system. In turn you need to learn how to find food from nature. I was kicked out at 17. I made my way to school by choice. I made my way to college and took out loans by choice. I am almost done paying debt and about to go back to college for another degree. I have been homeless twice. I have chosen to work because it provides food. I am Transexual and live in a very conservative state. I researched good companies to work for that would hire someone like myself. I have moved up to management. I am actually moving to Portland. I would never pitch my tent under the bridge. Those bridges and sidewalks are paid by tax dollars from working people. There are regulations created by people that are part of the system. when you don't work you are not in the system. So you don't have to work but then you can't do a lot of things. We rented a campsite for a month so that when we move to Portland. We will have sometime to get back on our feet. We wanted to leave Texas for obvious reasons and we made choices and plans and then we did it. Young people without disabilities have no reason to complain. Your life is your responsibility. If you want the benefits of the system you have to be part of it... it is that simple. Most of the people on here seem to blame all of their problems on everything except themselves. do something.

Beaux Cottle regardless if you’re working or not, the world judges you the same way. Nearly everyone who see you will assume you’re lazy and a burden to society because you weren’t able to buy a house, a car, and a sustainable income that afford you basic amenities. There’s no such thing to America as a “dignified homeless person”. By judging those who do sleep under bridges, you’re hopping that judging “them” will separate them from “you”. The roads and sidewalks you sat on or will sit on are also paid by tax dollars. Don’t judge the people who can’t get a job, who couldn’t get into a homeless shelter because they’re overcrowded so are forced to sleep under a bridge with a tent to escape the wind and the rain. You’re white. Even in this situation you often get favor over homeless people of color. Case in point? You have a job where a few videos ago, a reporter interviewed a homeless black man with a masters degree in nanotechnology and biochemistry. No one would hire him.

There are tents everywhere. There are no laws against homelessness in Portland. I work downtown. It's worse than 4000. Easily 15,,000. If you count people living in their vehicles. RV's and such. This is a huge nationwide problem.

Seriously, if he was that bad off, he should appreciate people making an effort to bring out sandwiches. It gets expensive to do that for everyone, and some just want to help in any way they can and they dont have 500 dollars vs 100 to try and help buy and make and pass out sandwiches. city team,union gospel, salvation army.. I hear they are not awesome. but it's something. the Blanchet however, is awesome.. you work in thier kitchens for 90 days (while living there, then after 90 is up you can stay there for another 4 months. that's 7 months of great food, clean semi private living space, definitely a great program to ( come up). you would think men would falling over themselves to get in. but they are rarely full. I wonder why that is..

She is beautiful and I wish I could Help her and the others but my family is barely making it paycheck to paycheck due to my health problems so I've learned to appreciate having a roof over my head a whole lot more now than ever before because I know how fast my families lives could change and we could be sleeping in our car or in a tent somewhere. I used to live in Portland in 2011 and it seems to get worse every time I visit now. I feel sorry for some of these homeless that got themselves in this situation or had bad fortune, but if I gave a dollar to every person that came up to me panhandling in downtown Portland I'd have to start with at least $200. My biggest problem with giving anyone a handout is most of them turn around and buy crack, meth or heroin with it, so since I don't know who is a drug user and who isn't I don't want to contribute to the use and selling of drugs. That's not helping them or society. I'll contribute to organizations that help the homeless instead.

Not all shelters are created equal... Instead of shelters, government needs to invest in housing with social services offices attached like The Jericho Project and others like it. It would help the communities and save taxpayers money...proven fact!

A warm meal is precious to the homeless... it makes going to the shelters worth the time an effort. I think that kind of meal also says the charities are struggling and trying to find food. This is an older video, but 2020 is a year when so many people are suffering and turning to charities... who have less in their benevolence funds. It's a big connected problems and no one seems to think of the bigger pictures.

Senio same way anyone does. Being a woman, young or attractive doesn't change things. They're not golden tickets. Trust me. Men might be kinder to me, having big boobs, but we still have to work just as hard (or harder) as women, and it usually doesn't give us carte blanche unless you're like a 10 and don't mind selling your body. Men assume being a woman who's at least somewhat attractive magically makes life easy, but it does not. Doesn't even make it easier to find love! As most of the ones who come on to you aren't people you'd want to be with.

There always a answers to change the homeless life by organization from the cities, people with money, and others get together rebuilding homes for homeless or Community tent city and Small homes. The city can hire people to care the homeless make sure they keep their place clean. In the community can also hire staff to make sure the city would feed them as well.

I've known some homeless by choice with legal income, homeless bc mental ill, homeless in car, homeless in weekly hotels, homeless bc they don't want bills, schedule, responsibility of any kind but their basic needs (often couch surf), and homeless bc something happens but they don't wanna be: this is the group that has the hardest time out there. The ppl I know that come together as a family seem to do the best. Someone might get a job for the day, someone might pan handle, someone might turn tricks, someone keeps an eye on all the stuff. They seem to be happier, healthier, safer. If I were in that sitch, I wld try to fam up. Weekly hotel that's $300 between 5ppl is $60, so less than $10/day each. With address you can get food stamps, shower for job interviews, get safe good sleep so stay healthier. Better chance of getting off streets I don't mind helping out but when I see you everyday in same place , most likely not pan handling bc actually need and trying to get life straight. I've offered a few ppl some money for work. Those that decline, i won't give cigs, food, water, whatever any more bc I know this is a choice to be a bum not homeless. I see a difference between homeless and a bum.

I feel bad for homeless people but don’t make it my fault your in that situation. It’s like me telling an millionaire it’s your fault I don’t have a mansion and expensive cars. Nothing was ever given to me or handed to me I didn’t go to college or even finish school but I worked hard and now make good income it’s all about hard work and never giving up. Also my biggest issue with homeless people is how they trash every spot they stay and than people have to clean up after them

It is a good question. It is a root cause within the individual. Mostly, 80%, is self inflicted through drugs and alcohol, or mental illness; sometimes all three. I was a homeless veteran for 3+ yrs. but is our gov't's vet programs that got me off the streets. The country's expanded vet programs were institued in 2008 (?). Even, with these amazing programs, many vets;peacetime service, after 'Nam but pre Desert Storm; take advantage of the program and are evicted due to drugs and alcohol. They get chance after chance, makes you sick, then they blame the VA for their personal problems. Sometimes, seeing documentaries on illegal aliens, they die trying to attain a chance to live in the US. They do whatever it takes to survive. Homeless Americans give the, "woe is me, woe is me, I cannot work because I have 30 disabilities."

Sad thing is California, Oregon and Washington have 54 percent of the us population. We the people of America have to not only do something about this. Some of us that do have money with these ideas can make this change and run for public office. It needs to be done on a 3rd party in america cause the 2 party system does not care about the homeless nor well they fix this problem. Yes Jesse Ventura is right we need a pro wrestler for president.

The First Homeless guy who said he was 34 years old just seemed so negative. He seemed to hate on younger People. Yes People will ask for cigarettes, but why not give one out if you got some. I've always thought that sharing is caring and why not give a free cigarette to someone who asks. Dude just seemed so sour and hateful of the World.

Well yeah, knock on a church's doors at 1:00 AM, of course nobody will be there to help you. Come on, man. A lot of churches do help the homeless, though, and they're the ones living by scripture. I disagree with the 'not good enough' mindset the guy in the beginning said - you need to be able to ignore any of those kinds of messages if you hear them, in order to succeed in life (success meaning living a fulfilling, relatively happy life as you want it). I think some get caught up in negative thinking or have certain things happen to them they never get over. And if they hear these messages, they take them too much to heart. I've personally never heard that sort of "not good enough" message. I'm sure it's been said, I just always ignored it. Maybe it's there in the subtext. But you've got to be able to push ahead and do your thing, and not care what others may say. Don't look for validation and approval externally, as not everyone will be able to receive it from those around them. Ignore what others think and do what you need to do. Homelessness, especially in Portland, is much more complex than that, those were just me thoughts when he said that. I'm still trying to devise something that might work to address this issue locally, so it can be presented to the city and NGOs that deal with homelessness.

Slim Jim "just"?? Believing in the Lord doesn't mean resolutions to problems. And being a skeptic / non believer / not knowing doesn't mean you're lost or unhappy, either. Religion doesn't work for everyone as not everyone is spiritually in tune, and won't have spiritual experiences. So there's nothing for faith to ride on. Empirical evidence isn't there, so faith must rely on something. For most, that's a foundation of spiritual experiences. But without that... we remain skeptics. Doesn't make us bad, immoral or unethical people though :)
