In the proud American tradition of sitting around in your yard on your days off, we spend some time in the great outdoors with my Bhut Jolokia plant. A pod review meant to be a low-key change of pace rips my face completely off, as I continue to be blown away at just how much hotter homegrown pods are than those I'm finding from other sources. Maybe the Texas weather?

Grew them last year. Took one to eat straight off the plant thinking my first attempt at growing them would somehow be lower strength than the ones on sale at the grocery store. My wife and kids still remind me of my performance. Growing more this year 😎

I have been growing about six ghost pepper plants for the last year... two or three of them for nearly two years. I toiled, labored, and brought them back and forth into the house during the winter. I fought off legions of aphids. This springtime, the plants went into overdrive, it's now August and some of the plants are so large, they are nearly as tall as me. I just went outside with a tape measure and grabbed some approximate measurements of the largest plant: 5 feet tall (about 3 1/2 feet from the top of the soil in the pot to the top of the leaves), 4 feet deep, and 4 feet wide. I generally use the peppers for a spicy rendition of Bobby Flay's jerk chicken: I substitute anywhere from 3-7 ghost peppers in for 1 scotch bonnet pepper so my wings are HOT. I've had so many peppers this year: I have a fairly large frozen bag of them (split and deseeded) and at the moment, 8 full jars of dehydrated peppers (also sectioned and deseeded). All of this isn't even counting all of the peppers that I've given away, eaten in marinades, on pizza tops, in tacos, ground beef, etc. I am going to grind the dehydrated peppers up with a mortar and pestle and carry them with me when I have to go overseas next year. Also, I now have a Trinidad Scorpion and Carolina Reaper plant growing at the moment...no peppers yet, but the Scorpion is 2 feet tall from the top of the soil and the reaper is 3 feet tall at this point. Keeping the ghost pepper plants alive over the winter, and seeing them truly come back to life in the springtime, is such a joy and it is magnitudes more endearing than simply growing them for a season (which is also quite awesome). Edit: Oh, and all those ghost pepper plants came from one tiny plant that I bought from Lowe's or Home Depot for about 7 dollars. Keep your seeds ;)

@chilichunn
@chilichunn 4 жыл бұрын
You're on the right track - throwing one of the pods into a long cook like that will give it a deep ghost pepper flavor and a long-lasting burn. It's also really good in fatty applications that will mute the heat, such as the cream cheese dip I'm posting tomorrow! Cheers Jackson, thanks for watching!
@pathtoalpha
@pathtoalpha 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, fats and oil will cut off the flavour. Have it slowly with small bites. Never drink water until the heat goes off, drnk only milk if u want. And much u go crazy, more the heat take over for longer time. Most importantly have it slowly and in very small bites, you can stop when u reach the limit.
@wanderingdipshit
@wanderingdipshit 3 жыл бұрын
You could also use it as a paste. Mash it up with some salt and keep dipping your finger in for some as you get dinner or Indian roti and curry. In the northeast of India where it's mostly found they use it to cook curries they make it into paste. Make pickle out of it. Bambooshoot pickle with King chilli. They dry it up and cook it for curries. It could be used for so many things. Hot sauce.

@@chilichunn You inspired me this evenin' to eat another one. I mainly grow them for the novelty of it all, but because I'm a practical person, I try to eat one every now and again! I have never ballsed-up and eaten a WHOLE ghost, yet.. More like: cut it in half vertically, throw away one half and all the insides (seeds and webbing) from both halves.. For the other half that I keep, I cut it into strips and then little squares about the size of someone's pinky nail. I'll eat a couple of those chips just straight out and then add the rest to whatever I'm eating. It is definitely more bearable in food when done this way. And I used to laugh about people speaking to the taste of ghost peppers, but I have come to love the flavor! ....through the heat.... [=

Lol😂 you know water makes it worse those pods are full of capsaicin oils your actually spreading the burn you should have a block of your favorite cheese eat some before you devour an entire pod lol & then some to neutralize the burn after dairy is the only thing other than time that will help. but hey ! It’s a free high! :) thanx for sharing ! 🙌🔥🔥🔥🌶

Edd Currie said the Buthla tastes like dirt 🤔 i tried the Carolina Reaper this year and was astonished how much flavour it had. Did you try the Carolina reaper yet? if yea, did you also taste this bitterness a bit? and if yes, how do you think it compares to other supehots tastewise? thanks for not focussing only on the spicyness. just discovered this channel. you are doing a great job! greetings from germany 🤗

Why going around sharing what someone elses opinion is on this fruit? Of course Edd is going to put down the ghost. He has an ego for creating something hotter. "my pepper is better" plain and simple if you seriously consider the ghost as tasting like dirt. Otherwise that dudes got something wrong with his taste buds compared to every other human on the planet.

The plants cant "mingle" like that if they have cross bred themselves then the seeds contain the gene but the pods look the same as the parent plant until you actually plant the seeds of the cross breeded pod.
