The best time to storm proof your greenhouse is Autumn or as soon as your growing year is over. Don't wait until the first storm arrives, by then it could be too late. There are a number of ways to do this and in this video I show you some of my ideas including so easy 'ground anchors' to prevent any chance of 'lift off'. Ten things you must do if you have a polycarbonate greenhouse: • Ten things you must do...

You can hear David Attenborough doing a commentary .........." and here we get a very rare glimpse of the shy northern Jim in his natural habitat as he prepares to hunker down for the winter. " 🙂

Just back from my local sea shore. Daisy and Meg had a great time though it was a 'bit of a squeeze' for them coming home, in the boot of the car with 5 bags of seaweed. David Attenborough nowhere to be seen. Jim.

Thank you for the helpful tips, Jim! We've got a very similar greenhouse, I think I'll pick up some of that tile edging and might pick up some bamboo while I'm at it.

When you look for the edging Dave look for the stuff thats 'on offer' or left over lengths. When I explained to the guy what I wanted it for and colour didn't matter he sold me lots of gold colour that nobody wanted. I think he let me have it for 50p a length. It was a few years ago. Jim.

@@HomeGrownVeg Fortunately, today I found various 8' aluminum extrusions that I had stashed above the shop years ago. They'll do well. All this clutter over the years is starting to pay off.

@@daveb7999 Hello Dave. So that I didn't have to drill any holes in the sheets (they were weak enough) and in an emergency I ran strips of sellotape along the tile edging and pressed it onto the sheets. Its still holding fast after 3 years. The sheets don't rattle any more. Have a good gardening year. Jim.

We don't have a greenhouse, but we did start making chop n drop yesterday. Our riding mower attachment is capable of holding 4 bushels of material. By spreading it in a long row and going over it a second time, very slowly, it turned 4 bushels of leaves and grass into 2 bushels of perfect chop n drop. Most will be put on our beds, buckets, and bags. The rest will be put into a new compost bin built yesterday, and some leaf cages built yesterday. To be used to mix grass clippings into next Spring, when browns are no longer available, but in abundance now. Great advice to prepare in advance for this Winters harsh weather, and next Springs planting season.

Your just ahead of me on this one Mark. I was on our local seashore with Daisy and Meg today and collected 5 bags of seaweed. Driving home, It was a bit of a squeeze for the dogs in the boot with 5 bags of seaweed. Everybody got home safe and the seaweed is now spread on my lawn being rained on. As soon as wee get a couple of dry days I will put the lawnmower over it before putting it on my beds buckets and bags. Jim.

I drilled some 3mm holes in the vertical ally profiles on the outside of the greenhouse, threaded coated wire through them and twisted the ends back on themselves. Two per polycarb sheet. On the inside, I sealed all the polycarb sheet edges with Gorilla Sealant (strong stuff!). The greenhouse withstood the last few storms!

I did consider drilling holes to insert some fixings but to be honest the structure was so 'light weight' I thought the holes would just make it weaker. Jim.

Hi Jim. Could you tell me exactly how you secured the tile edging to the metal uprights? Were the nuts and bolts fitted into the slots from the inside? Also what is that attached to the nut and bolt that is securing the bamboo to the roof? Thank you. This is all very helpful.
@HomeGrownVeg

The tile edging has holes along its length that can be aligned with the slots on the underside of the roof and wall. some holes might need 'opening out' to get better alignment. The bolts are pushed into the slots on the inside to secure the tile edging. The bamboos are held in place similarly except that I had to fit a saddle over them. The saddle could be a small pipe bracket for pipe a similar diameter to the bamboo. Where the tile edging touches the sheets I have run a strip of sellotape to hold one to the other, it stopps the sheets rattling in the wind and holds them in place. Hope this helps. Jim.

I cannot find any cheap metal tile trims so I'm going to use metal angle beads what plasterers use. 3meter length for £3. Will use these on my new polycarbonate greenhouse

@@Ian-1957 Hello Ian. I went to a shop that sells kitchen hardware. When I asked about till edging strips and told the guy I wasn't bothered about style and colour he took me to a rack That was full of gold edging strips. He told me nobody was using gold edging anymore and that I could have as many as I liked for 50p (I think) each. Eight foot long, perfect. Jim.

@@Ian-1957 When I got this stuff I didn't get enough so I went back a few days later to get some more. I got a different sales person this time so I recounted my last visit, took the lady to where the edging was stacked and got another few lengths. She didn't no what to charge me so I told her I had paid 50p a strip on my last visit and that's what she charged me. Jim.

Short for cellophane tape. It's wide, perfectly clear and super sticky. Here's a link to show what it is. Also called packing tape. It's the kind that goes in a dispenser to quickly seal boxes. Hope this makes sense. Any big box store will carry it. Hope this helps. www.duckbrand.com/products/moving-storage/packaging-tapes/clear-188-in-x-1093-yd-6-pk
