I did not know that. Just ran out into the garden, roasted up some seeds in the popcorn popper and brewed it up as an undersized shot of espresso. This is the sort of knowledge I'm on the web for. Liked and subscribed.

In the Southern US, we use dandelion root & chicory root, roasted, for our coffee... My gran always had a patch of chicory. If we had too much, the chickens & goats love to eat it, too. I had some cleavers growing in my yard that were always grabbing at my ankles... Got rid of it, not knowing what it was, dang it. Now I'm going to order seed for it & put it in a big container in an out-of-the way space. Thank you.

Oh wow. I’m in Brooklyn, NY and I just realized these are the annoying weeds I pull out of my yard constantly through the spring. I can’t leave them growing in the yard or I’d get a ticket from the city, but perhaps if I get them small, I can put them in a pot and keep then around until they seed.

Have lots of sticky willy here in Luther Burbank s town Santa Rosa in Sonoma County California. I make sticky willy pesto in the spring. Will have to try the coffee. We have lots of miners lettuce.Alice Waters used to make salads which is what I do. Chockful of nutrients, the only wild edible plant exported to England and Europe from the US but it mostly grows in California. Miners used to eat it for Vitamin C and tribes used it seasoned with the peppery trails of ants.If you live in California or possibly parts of Oregon there is the California Bay Tree (umbellularia California) from which I get bay leaves (trimmed down; they're strongly mentholated). It's a beautiful tree can grow very old and tall. Beautiful wood for carving.. In the fall the berries Pomo tribes called peppernuts cluster on trees, fall in storms. Considered a delicacy when roasted and ground they're supposedly slightly stimulating, though I didn't experience that so much.

Funky. I haven't heard of doing coffee from cleavers before. Makes sense as its in the same family. Just much less popular than doing dandelion or chicory.

Seems like you could keep them cool, dark & dry over winter to use if you run out of coffee, then plant them in the spring for more! Cleavers is also good for the skin. I made a jar of cleavers-infused oil for salve. It's a component of my antibiotic ointment.

@@DiAllinson I gather them in the spring,dry them,and use them mostly to make tea.I notice if I drink a cup in the morning I feel much much better,and they are very mild,so they are easy on the system.They seem to get the toxins in our systems moving out and they are good for the lymphatic system.They really are one of my favorite herbs.They also are calming to the system,so for allergies and and over stimulated nervous system they are very helpful.

I've made coffee from Triosteum perfoliatum (Late Horse Gentian). It was a good coffee substitute. I will definitely give this a try.

I’m surprised to see cleavers coffee. I know cleavers as a potent diuretic, outperforming the drug Lasix, in my experience. I will certainly try it as a coffee alternative.

I picked quite a lot to make in bulk (is very abundant here), but ended up with lots of little bits of stalk that are almost impossible to get out (yes, I was a bit impatient - regretting it now!!) Next year I will for sure let some come to full maturity and see if they do get red stems. We usually pull those suckers the first sign of them so I'm going to be keeping an eye out next year and just have a small patch that I let grow and I'm going to try some of that coffee made from sticky tights
