I don’t believe homelander meant a genuine physical fight as in they show up somewhere a fist fight. He meant it in the sense of “this is war” more of a long term thing between them, like chess, and yes it would likely eventually end in one of them dying (although homelander knows the power difference between them and he would instantly win) but he also knows about Butchers capabilities as a tactician, and his determination, and his lack of fear for anyone especially homelander. So it was in that frame if mind when they made that deal. And that’s also why homelander was genuinely surprised when butcher had powers in herogasm because it’s something he wouldn’t expect and didn’t/couldn’t predict.

It does intrigue me how Homelander has basically found the only person in the world who can actually relate to him. Billy isn’t as much of a homicidal maniac as Homelander is (at least in the show the comic is a different story altogether) but Billy’s still very dangerous. And Billy will throw caution to the wind when it comes to getting even with Homelander, even if that means putting people at risk Billy will do it and not think twice about it. I think it’s really telling that they agree to the scorched earth ending, I feel like more than anything that says how much damage Billy would really do if given the chance.

Seeing Homelander get so frustrated in season 4 that no one challenges him or questions his orders makes this scene even better imo. He hates Butcher but at the same time utterly respects him for the simple fact that he doesn't show a single ounce of fear at the notion of telling a near literal God to go fuck himself. I think the only other character that would possibly get similar respect for the size of his cast iron balls would be Stan Edgar.

I think the one thing Homelander and Butcher would agree on (and quite a few fans would too) is how tiresome and pathetic this whole charade and back-and-forth is, especially in this last season. Butcher having to deal with MM and Starlight's hypocritical self-righteous bullshit, getting scorned by two people who have no priorities or solid plans whatsoever. They know their Doomsday Clock is ticking, yet are getting distracted by stupid shit, are incapable of making progress and keep whining at Butcher for it. And now Homelander, himself a complete pathetic mess in charge of a complete pathetic mess, having to deal with Ashley, the Seven and the rest of Vought, all cowardly ass-kissers who also don't have any REAL initiative that isn't corny propaganda. His only effective ally is now Neumann and Sage, who are both the farthest thing away from trustworthy. They all know this ends in blood and gore, but refuse to commit to it out of convenience, pretense or selfish moralism.
