I lived in LA 25 years back and that area was the same then too. So there's nothing new. In fact there is another area when cop cars followed by helicopter for cover. I forget the name. My guess is you already left the place (LA). Khaugo gali (while I have not been to it) kind of place would be Artesia which is may be 30 to 45 minutes drive from LA (depending on traffic) Cerritos mein bahu desi khana milega.

Showing only the crappy parts of LA doesn’t make sense. It’s only a very small section of the city where there is homelessness or crime. LA is a huge city and its surrounding areas are really beautiful and you should explore those places such as Santa Monica, Griffith park, LA live, marina del Rey, Korea town and others.
