Homeless encampments on the rise in Toronto and across Ontario

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario is calling on the province to further assist with the services needed to help those living in encampments. It was estimated that 1,400 existed throughout Ontario in 2023. Mark McAllister reports.

Most of these people have other problems besides housing. In my area of Edmonton, at least 80% of them are on drugs. Windows are boarded up because they have been broken. Garbage is strewn all over the sidewalks are filthy. I have sympathy for the genuinely homeless people. But not for the destroyers.

Federal goverent must immediately build shelters for everyone it allows into Canada. Residents clean communal areas and cook for themselves and REMAIN in the shelter until their asylum hearings. No more rewarding fake refugees and lowering standard of living for Canadians. Housing benefits push rent rates higher and penalize those missing criteria for the benefits. No provincial housing benefits to anyone who cannot prove Canadian citizenship!

News Flask Kyle, a lot of these Junkies seem pretty entitled and out of control, and many of them are Canadian. The government hands out $1200 a month to help them, but they just spend it all on drugs. They often get kicked out of shelters because of their actions and face eviction from social housing for not paying rent due to their substance use. They skip out on medical and counseling appointments too. There are tons of resources and support available, but it seems like all they care about is using drugs or alcohol, cashing their monthly checks, and living in chaos.

Homelessness is caused by landlords. Full stop. The only good thing to say about landlords is that their buildings are not as bad as public housing. What we need is a faster and cheaper way to build homes, and a place to put them.

landlords have nothing to do with creating homelessness. In fact they provide homes to reduce the amount of people that are homeless. Landlords just follow simple supply and demand curves and basic economics. Blame our politicians (from all levels and all parties) that failed miserably to build proper affordable housing over the last several decades while at the same time limiting the supply of homes available. @@pacman3556 So, all the N12 and N13 form evictions are somehow imaginary? News stories going back years showing the same units for rent right away at a much higher rent are somehow fabricated? Of course all landlords are far too ethical to ever engage in profiteering! Judging by the actual arrest reports, the only thing that they seem to be guilty of is defrauding the real estate investment trusts that finance them. As far as "providing" housing, I am not seeing much in the way of new construction, even though such newly constructed units would be exempt from rent control. Seems that the opposite is true; buildings are regularly neglected to the point that they are condemned and need to be demolished (that would be the N13 form evictions.) So, sure. Let's blame the government. They have certainly failed to enforce the law.

Even the total count is not clear and all levels of gov are responsible in some way or other Ford lifted rent controls, banks hiked mortgage rates so rents went up and we had a sudden inflow of people over the historical avg. which was also questionable, quite a mess to unravel
