WARNING: This video will mess you up!
Being on a road trip focusing on homeless youth it was important to tell the story of the homelessness you don't see -- the millions of American families living in weekly rate hotels just barley one step from street homelessness. In fact, when I met this wonderful family today, they were packing up to leave and live in their car. The hotel had given them one day's grace, but they were completely out of money with no place to go. I am still emotional thinking about it even hours later. Truth is, thousands upon thousands of families face being evicted from a hotel to the streets every single day! This family was lucky. I tweet out what I call a "Hail Mary" and a generous heart stepped up and donated a weeks stay. That too messed me up!
Michael, Danielle, and their six children live in one hotel room near St Louis. Michael works a full time job, and they used to rent a house, but their landlord didn't pay the mortgage. After the bank took the property back, Michael, Danielle, and their six children were evicted with no place to go.
Hotel homelessness becomes a trap. Hotel's cost more than an apartment, but you can move right in without deposit, and a hotel room is far better than the streets. Once in, people who are considered the working poor, have an impossible time trying to save up enough money to afford adequate housing. Often these hotels are not a good place for kids to grow up.
There is a lot of emotion in this video. I get messed up throughout, but when the parents start talking about having to run in to the bathroom to cry so the kids don't see -- I'm done! I am pissed that families have to live like this and heartbroken because I can literally feel their pain. I don't speak about this much, but I was raised by my mother and we went through some hard years when I was young.
If I could get you to watch just one video all the way to the end, and then share, this would be that video. This family is filled with strength and love, and has the courage to share their very real story about the homeless you don't see, but need to see!
Special thanks to Paul Kruse, who helps these families every single day of the year www.firststepbackhome.net

@Joe Mack Not sure what you’re getting at. I don’t like the idea of children on video for the heartbreaking effect it creates, as they witness their mother in tears being interviewed talking about grownup concepts. I would have been traumatized seeing that at their ages. It has nothing to do with the size of the room.

You do know that Child Protection Services (which coordinates with Social Services) takes kids away if homeless people lose their hotel and/or get kicked out of their shelter? They're required by LAW to do so.

We need to ask the question as to WHY “we are all one paycheck away from being homeless” is a phrase people constantly write in the comments.. no we are NOT Alllll one paycheck away. Take some initiative and learn how to create a household budget. So many people waste money on things that they don’t need. And barely anyone has a budget on paper and follows it.

When I was 6 years old my family was homeless and living in a campground in a tent for several months until we got back into a house. My mom told me we were on Vacation and I did not find out until I was around 16 that we had no other place to live. I remember telling my mom I was tired of being on vacation! One day I found a bunch of change by the playground and I showed it to my mom and I remember she asked me if she could borrow it. I'm sure she used it for food.

Logically speaking, since you want to judge rather than critically think, the father probably got most of those tattoos BEFORE all those kids came along. The kids aren't that old. He could have got the tats in his younger, "wilder" days and now settling down and trying to provide for his family. He's at least there. So many parents run away from their responsibilities.

Yeah he is there, and for six kids, it is so amazing to me. I would run a mile, like seriously, no way I could do that. But I have to wonder why they have six kids. That's what I judge I guess, I didnt even think about the tattoos. But six kids?!?! Who does that? Who brings six children into the world in quick succession, without even basic financial stability? As amazing as I find his and his wife's fortitude, I also have to think them equally as irresponsible, and their poor children could well end up serious victims of their parent's actions. So yeah, I am judging, but man, I have to.

That happened to me. I had sold my house and was not sure what area I wanted to live in permanently so I rented a house. Three months after I moved in with a one year lease I had a knock on the door from the bank representative telling me that the owner of the house I rented had not paid the mortgage in three months. It was me and my daughter. I was shocked. But I found out that the bank had to give me three months due to the court date for the reprocessing. So he told me you can stay three months and pay the owner or not it your choice. So we stayed the three months I keep that rent money and found a place. I actually rented a room from a friend to have the time to figure out just where I wanted to be. So I have come a long way since then. And so the first chance I got I bought land. Now we always have a home. Even if it’s in a tent. We can be on our on land. But we have put a cabin on the property now and if one of my children wants to live there the sky is the limit. They can have a tiny house and RV or build a huge house. There is room for all of my family. That eviction taught me a lesson that has benefited not just me but my children and any future family. We will have a home. And in my will I have stated it is never to be sold. Only passed to family. And my girls know where and where to pay the taxes if I am ever unable to. God bless you I hope you find your forever home.

I want to tell you a sad story. I know an elderly person that wanted to die at his home not in a elderly place, so one of the daughter(adopted daughter) that was chosen to be on his will, so the monster daughter wanted to sell the elderly man's home so that she still could have some money for her. In her mind his money would disappear due to his health condition needing 24 nursing, etc, and she thought that a nursing home is cheaper and she would have some money left for her. The point here: The elderly man worked so hard in his entire life to have his home where he could enjoy and relax until he dies. And then he got Auzheimer when he was around 85 years old, and the greedy daughter dumped him in nursing home with strangers and did not even allow the step daughter to continue taking care of him at his own home. The adopted daughter and the step daughter was on the will. So it does not matter if you have a home, somebody evil will take your home and dump you in a nursing home. It should have laws to prevent people dumping elderly peopl on nursing home against their will. It just like I put you on my will to take care of my dog with all the comfort and care until he dies, but you decide to dump my dog in a shelter. It's really scaring get old with or without family around you. Scaring.

I think they are all trying. People suffering from drug addiction or alcoholism are trying to survive ( and get their booze or drugs, but about 70 plus percent of homeless are dealing with some kind of mental illness, we need to have free and GOOD mental health help in this country and free and GREAT substance abuse programs. For anyone out there selling drugs, shame on you, not on these homeless people, you are ruining our society and our country. I'm not talking about the people selling mar Jane to survive but the people selling hard core black tar heroine or math or cocaine or oxY We had a neighbor who had extremely wealthy parents who set him up in a condo on the top floor, every time he wrecked his BMW from DUI his mommy bought him a newer model. He harassed every neighbor who lived across from him and beneath him until they sold up and moved. Every single neighbor who lived across from him he got into a screaming match. His front door was busted in 3 times in 8 years. His 2 plus year old was taken by DFS, she didn't know why her parents were not going with her.they let the girlfriend ( enabler off to stay and raise their child) even though they were both brought up on fedral charges. Because his parents have SO much mo at, good lawyers pleaded him down to 5 years. They let him out early for covid but he came home and switched the drugs for booze ( because it is legal). And would sleep all day long while he was supposed to be tending their child, and yell at her to go back to bed until 2 or 3 in the afternoon (Because he was loud and so the neighbors heard every shouting match, this little girl is like 7 now and he would yell " get the F#@* back in your room and stop crying" after he intentionally tripped her. I have no sympathy for these people that do not tell their kids "NO" ever. Your job as an adult is 2 raise your kids to survive being well-adjusted without you and being able to take care of themselves without you because one day you will not be there to bail them out to hire a lawyer to buy them a new car, to mop up their mess, so teaching them they don't always get their way it's vital. He is a messm he is in his early/ mid forties and doesn't know anything but manipulation chaos and lies, oh and how to be a " club promoter" Which translates to " drug dealer". When people come from out of state and stay one night, then the next 2 night's new cars are driving up every 10 to 15 minutes all night long. We need to do better than this because somewhere we got the wrong message, whether we have a flash expensive car or designer boots or jeans is not important, whether our kids grow up feeling safe and secure and well adjusted and loved is and whether our elderly widow neighbors can feel safe leaving their homes. Life is beautiful if we don't mess it up to much. Kate wrote this

I remember when my husband and I separated because he abandoned my son and I for another woman and her child and I had to move into a hotel room .We had bought a new home spacious with new furniture then we became less involved and I was pushed out of my home to call a small rundown hotel my home. I had to provide for my son on a fixed income when I was used to two therefore reality sat in and I was living a dream then thrown into a bug infested small room with a TV with hardly any stations and rundown furniture .At times I felt like God was punishing me because he was living good with his mistress income wearing nice clothes and shoes while my son and I had barely three items. And if you were wondering about our new furniture and old belongings when he left I couldn't pay the rent so I moved to a cheaper place and the landlord held our things for payment but soon through it on the streets for others to collect at a date we wasn't aware of. I know struggle and it was times when we didn't have hardly nothing to eat and all I could do was cry when my three year old head was turned .I know what it's like to have everything to because I grew up into a suburban household but lost it when my father the provider passed in2002.Of coarse my mom income was nice yet my family struggled with his death. Finances wasn't good for my mother and sibling . It was times we had no food so this experience was similar to my current circumstances .Things got better with time and I learned to not look down on others because you just never know.I was in a hotel room yes but lived in a nice home to end being yanked out of that lifestyle quick .Now in 2018 I see this family and know exactly what they mean . It makes me look at my life now and what I have which is alot .My son has everything he dreams of nice clothes ,shoes, cellphone, laptop a room that looks like it came out of rooms to go .But in the end we can always revert back to familiar surroundings quick . Knowing that this dream can end because my mother and I share bills ,if something happens to me or her this dream can be done for and that's scary .At night i prey to God for stibility which is assurance that we will continue to be alright .I feel that's what most people fear is to be able to keep up with the American dream .It can kill you the stress but I haven't felt that in a decade . I see this family and my heart melts .The closeness is bueatiful that's the glue that's will hold them together .I prey they overcome anything or anyone that stands in there way because God is good even through the bad he is with us .Life is a test you have to Ace it under pressure and pass with flying colors if you're immune to succeeding .It's not what you do to utilize life but how you do it .Pain is only temporary never permanent but you have to believe in God through it all because he is the healer ,provider ,our strength .And what God has in store for you not no man can't block his blessings.I know because the man who left my child and I is homeless with mental issues the mistress left him and I'm living good with not a care in the world .He thought he had the power to take away life but God had other plans and I'm a living wittness.God bless the family Amen.

With an apartment, you have to come up with a security deposit and the first-month and sometimes the last month. Even if rents only $600 you would need $1200- $1800 to move in. Not to mention application cost which can be anywhere from $20-$50 for each adult. Then you have to pay a deposit on your Electricity which can sometimes be anywhere from $250-$500 for them to turn it on. Usually the only time a family this size has money like that us during tax return time. Who has an extra $3000 to move at the drop of a hat? I should but I don't.

Well while he is in the motel, he could save some money to be able to pay the deposit and the fee and move to a simple apartment and then gradually improving their conditions. The woman could do some house cleaning, cooking, sewing and sell the services but staying in motel it's difficult. Sometimes all these things are difficult to do because your mental state is not clear too much stress and freezes us for better decisions.

@helgahamster790
@helgahamster790 6 жыл бұрын
cradleygirl I hope they find a way out of this situation. But, honestly if You are living from paycheck to paycheck, that would be THE main reason not to have 6 children. If you have 1 or 2 the wife could could get a part time job while they are in school to help pay bills.Raising children and living expenses are so expensive that often both parents need to work to make it.What if the husband has an accident and can't work anymore. They did not own their home .It would be different if they own a house.You could sell it , move into an apartment and live of the money from selling your home. If you are renting , anything could happen. The landlord has a right to sell his house and the new owner may want to live in the house himself. Getting married does not mean you have to have kids right away if you have no savings .People could both work for a few years , save some money and than have kids . They seem like loving parents, but raising kids in utter poverty is not fair to the kids.The father seems like such a nice person, but he can not afford such a big family.Thats the real problem.

The same thing happened to me. Thank goodness I had no kids. The landlord just walked away from the property. He straight up abandoned it. Meanwhile, the guy that collected the rent kept coming by and taking my rent without telling me that no one owns the property. I noticed that the only other tenants upstairs had moved out but no one told me why. One day Bank of America showed up and asked me wtf I was doing there.
