It really saddens me that no one has done a serious analysis of the series, especially the manga. While many enjoy it for the humor and romance between the leads, I find there to be more underneath the surface. To me, it's the tale of a girl who has hit rock bottom and finds herself dealing with a huge responsibility. And despite her being a mortal with much grief and is constantly doubted upon, she retains optimistic and determined to make matters right. She suffers threats to her life, occasional failures, and even heartbreak. Sometimes, she does get down. But like a good hero, with resolve and with the occasional assistance, she always picks herself back up. To me, Nanami embodies pushing through hard times better than many Shonen protags who just shrug off damage that would have crippled or killed a real person. She is still a vulnerable human which is why even a guy like me can still empathize and be inspired by her overcoming external and internal obstacles.

@@jeremiahbaker6396 I prefer the manga itself because it has more details in the arcs the anime covered and has the full story. Because of this, it contains more character development and has better handling of its themes. One of the best examples is Mizuki himself, who matures as a person. Nanami especially undergoes major hurdles and even has some badass moments of her own (such as tricking two yokai into a traffic of giants whilst using a pre-written ofuda that protects her from said traffic). If only someone would do a serious review of the manga. If I knew how to gather and edit manga scans in addition to recording and editing my speech, maybe I could do it, though I'm not sure if I'm up to the task.

That is why nanami is one of my fav mc. She embodies the word "human" and what it means to be a human. Not perfect. But also, not a failure. Someone who struggles but also someone who persists. A being who knows how to feel pain and share the feelings of others

The second half of the series is even better. The Gods themselves finally accept her as one of them when she manages to do what almost all of them cannot, and by her power protecting her, she shows her godhood by being able to go into the underworld and returning alive.

Not really a second half as the second season only covers up to volume 11 (and not even the entirety of that) out of 25. Sure, there's some OVAs that do showcase the end of the story but it's only select parts.

Actually, (spoilers) Nanami was always the person Tomoe fell for. There is a stable time loop where she time traveled and, while under the guise if Yukiji in an attempt to retain the order of events, she was the original lover of Tomoe.

So...idk if its the nostlagia that makes ppl like this. But as a new viewer , this just seems like a meh anime Not because of the art or concept of the anime I love the char. Designs I love ancient god/godess stories I love hot friccin cat/crow/snake boy's design I love the cute lesbian confession, it was wholesome I love the snake boy's more complex misunderstading arc +third wheeling + sake to girl The problem is their personality and VERY non consentual acts + Female Lead stupidity trope 1.She kissed him without consent (justified only cuz he..well....was about to kill her, fair enough? Just wonder if she knew it wouldve made him her familiar beforehand) 2.Snake kissed her unconcious (again justified to...fight the miasma+monster? I dont know if he could just fight without having to be her familiar) 3.Tomoe kissed her again to reseal the deal(non consentual but this one's the only one thtas more okay with me ) 4.She KEEPS SIMPING FOR TOMOE AND FOR WHAT (gets almost killed by him, keeps getting rejected straightforwardly + Respectfully but gets pissed/soo suprised when tomoe rejects her and thinks about his ACTUAL lover Yukiji(yes shes dead but its cler he isnt interested in our FL to begin with so her pushy "date me" behavior makes her comes off as creepy in tomoe's prespective too even for a human) 5.She still falls in love with him and for what??? All this time tomoe is a possesive asshat who still hates her for..reasons??? In her prespective, he hasnt done much to her to be that affectionate AND HE REJECTED U SO MANY TIMES, AND SAYING YOULL STILL LOVE HIM IS SO CREEPY, JUST GET OVER IT, ULL JUST HURT URSELF 6.SHE ABANDONS THE SHRINE WHOM SHE'S THE GOD OFF, NO WONDER THE SEAL AND WHOLE SHRINE'S CONDITION WORSEN EVEN MORE, YOU LEFT YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY//DOMAIN, THE ONE THING YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DO IN AN ALREADY BAD SITUATION IS DO WHAT YOURE ORDERED TO(they were attacked by miasmas and meant to target her +shrine as a test) Im pissed they tell that moment as an awokening of her realising her home is the shrine While ive been screaming "YEA NO SHI DINGUS YOURE THE GOD OF THAT PLACE, WHY DID YOU RUN AWAY FOR SUCH PETTY SHI? I wished we would have seen more of Mizukis shrine spirits as they reminded me of skull kids from Zelda with their scarecrow-esque designs. I liked the manga more for its tale of a vulnerable and beaten down heroine who is doubted upon persevering through external and internal obstacles (while being endearingly dorky). Even when her feelings were not initially returned, she didn't guilt trip like many characters (regardless of gender like in vampire knight or Rent a girlfriend). Nanami was a character that I saw as a role model for growth and perseverance, even better than typical Shonen MCs who unrealistically power through crippling obstacles. I also liked it for the development of certain characters, like Mizuki going from a sheltered antagonist to a noble person who opens himself to the world around him (while also being endearingly dorky).
