Homeless In Burien 2023

Average rent is $2785. Burien has been spending a lot on developing housing but not for the working class. Beautiful library. Parks.
I have gone to town meetings to listen in on concerns. Zoning was changed to allow for these tall condo buildings but not enough parking. So people who are paying to live in a single family residential area have their streets jammed with cars.
Camp Second Chance is north of here, set up with tiny homes. But residents have to commit to no drugs, no alcohol. I toured it and it’s great. Counseling and education are available. This could be duplicated elsewhere.

I hear that the Air 'BNB's somewhat caused there to be a dirth of studio apartments. The owners of tiny cottages are not renting them out to permanent renters. This is about to change, so I hear. This may solve the issue for some!🍀

The funny thing with this Lily, you're absolutely right, look what's going on in New York City, the migrants are coming in, and they pour in a minute, saying, we got no money, but you're a funny place for themselves fast, meanwhile, the homeless people who've been there for years can't. Find a home for nothing that's not right. You must take care of your own before you can take care Before you can take care of other people most of care of your own first.

Lily we are having the same problems in the UK, more refugees are being housed and the residents of those hotels,or disused Ex Army camp base’s are asked to leave before the allotted time and placed elsewhere. Because of the War in Ukraine and the influx of migrants from Africa,Syria ,Afghanistan, Great Britain and other countries in Europe are suffering with people being homeless through no fault of their own.🇬🇧🇺🇸👍❤️

I’ve seen a lot about that in the news. Our government is sending people from the southern border by bus and plane all over the country. It’s overwhelming. So many gang shootings in what used to be safe neighborhoods here. The gangs come from South America. They know they can get away with so much. Yesterday a woman tried to walk out of the grocery store with a full cart right where I was waiting at the checkout. The two young men working there ran out the door to stop her and succeeded. They said it was a constant. The thieves are always testing. Some stores don’t stop thieves, forbidden by management. It isn’t safe to shop alone really because women are robbed in the parking lots, usually by packs of teens. So we are without rule of law as we knew it.

There is plenty of land outside Seattle to create decent camps. I volunteered at Tent City 4 when it was in the woods. Some of the residents were veterans, some were retired people on Social Security, some had jobs and commuted on the bus. If anybody was using alcohol or drugs, they would have to hide it. For all the money that gets squandered, inexpensive housing could be built. Some of the non-profits are said to be corrupt.

My brother was a triage nurse for the VA on the phones. He says there is no reason for any to be homeless, as a veteran. All they have to do is walk into a VA building, hospital, admin, etc and ask for help to find housing. Many are too mentally ill or on drugs to do that. Those who are on drugs, Medicaid cannot help. Even the VA campus police cannot take a veteran to the VA. They have to walk in on their own accord, or ask a regular police officer for a ride to a VA facility.

The only way to end homelessness is to stop "helping" them. Where does the money go? It is divided a countless number of times between the needy, but unfortunately that will always be the case. If you make any system better, more people will come to it. Homelessness cannot be made to be appealing (like it is currently) or else you will end up with more homeless. What does need to be done is, we need to make it illegal for people to own more than 1 house, or for businesses to invest in residential real estate. This will crash the price of housing overnight, and a bunch of rich peoples pension plans, but it would allow everyone to be able to afford a house. You can't buy a house because a rich person wants to rent it to you. Change that, change the world!
@LilyGazou
@LilyGazou Жыл бұрын
Definitely something to think about. California is not doing well with whatever plan they have. I was reading comments under videos about drug addiction. There were people who had been homeless/addicted for years. Then they were able with help and their own commitment to quit drugs, get work and training, then have the money saved for a room and then apartment. I think we should hear more from them about what helped them most to break the cycle.

Just random sprinkling of money would not help anyone... Politicians and councils have an interest to keep real estate prices up. A) They own real estate( no one wants to shrink their own wallet), B) Their donors are landlords and homeowners, C) Homeowners and landlords are still a huge voting base C) Their funding is directly connected by real estate prices via property tax.
@LilyGazou
@LilyGazou Жыл бұрын
Their donors may also include the non-profits that receive money to solve the problems. I haven’t investigated deeply on this. I read about Seattle in the earlier days and there were decent affordable rooming houses. Some large private houses on Capital Hill were divided up into tiny cheap apartments. Some of my friends lived in them for as little as $250 a month up until about ten years ago. They could walk to work and shopping, no need of a car. Those same apartments are over $2000 now. But their wages haven’t risen to match that - so they moved to other states. I’m not blaming these landlords because the costs of garbage collection, all the repairs, insurance and property taxes have risen dramatically.
@Bukkawarnis
@Bukkawarnis Жыл бұрын
@@LilyGazou well I really doubt what NGO's could compete with the giant holding companies which invest in real estate, plus extremely rich individuals who wouldn't be happy if the politicians who they supported would go against their money. Just checked Blackstone contributions they love to give money for both Republicans and Democrats. In my opinion real estate even shouldn't be investment at all, unless you are lending for it's construction, reconstruction, repurposing and ect...

I have a van so I always have it in mind that I can get work anywhere. For the regular working class, I would say move to a small town area near resorts because there are always jobs, some with accommodations. A certain amount of these tent dwellers just move to where the freebies are good and don’t want to give up drugs and alcohol, just party their lives away. And some need a mental hospital but refuse it. California has more homeless than ever due to climate , available drugs and good services.

One of my friends made it out of addiction and the tent life, got a job and eventually saved enough money to buy a little house. She was careful to go to AA and therapy, careful to make sober friends who supported each other’s sobriety. It takes a lot to change course and achieve a dream. The only thing that stopped her was cancer. I lost a relation to heroin- he had every kind of help from family over the decades. It broke their hearts. But he chose the drugs every time as soon as he got out of a rehab.
