Invisible People

Күн бұрын

When I walked up on Larry he had all his clothes out drying in the sun. He was extremely nice and wanted to make sure I was comfortable. He rearranged a few items on the grass so I could sit. When everything you own can fit into a medium-sized suitcase that bag becomes your life. Looking at life through the eyes of a homeless person everything changes. In Larry's mind, he eats like a millionaire although he is surviving of off food that has been thrown away. Larry has kind of a neat idea. He suggests that the city put little racks next to the trash cans where food, beverages, clothes, or anything valuable could be left for the homeless. A few times Larry talked about his drug use. Living on the streets is horrible and anyone would want to escape reality. I found it interesting that Larry was the second homeless accountant I spoke to that day. Larry speaks a few times about the homeless supporting each other, yet when I lived on the streets I found it to be the exact opposite.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, theyíre on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and canít ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nationís most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath ñ its founder ñ and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of Americaís homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

But doesn't seem like the kinda person who would be ok with working in a fast food place. This guy, is homeless cause he is ok with it, and doesn't seem to have the drive to get out of it. @j m This is Social Media numbnuts. Comments are part of it. And, as you even point out, I did say "seems" Could be completely wrong, but basing the comment on what comes across in the video. Even he mentions being fired multiple times, and homeless a few times. So just an opinion, nothing more, or less The guy comes across, as somewhat coherent, and communicates well. Dude is capable of working, whether pushing a broom, or flipping burgers, I doubt he'd be able to find a job as an accountant off the get. And, to add to it, doesn't appear he is suffering too much Yeah, probably a hard life etc.. and would take some time and energy and focus to get back up and running, but yeah, based on this 10 minutes, doesn't seem like he would want to. Hes grown accustomed to this lifestyle. Its what he knows, and is comfortable in it. Answer honestly, do you really see this guy accepting a job at McDonald's? If so, he would've already done it

In The US at least it's hard for any single individual or party to take full control of the country, because of the system of checks in balances. This is the only reason you still have some freedoms. Yes, its true most of account executives, junior and regular executives get big bonuses they do not want someone who really understand the information. For example, they used to ban ethical appraisers with no disciplinary actions meaning from their regulatory agency while hinting clients to use ones that had some. Same thing with tax preparers and/or other misrepresentation. Ones that would finesse the numbers so it would get it approved stays. See there is no commission coming in if the deal was denied and/or a price hit the problem is that from a risk perspective sometimes companies go down because of this and/or have to do some complex synthetic CDOs swaps to get the assets 'off' their balance sheet. Sad just show how for-profit bonuses can destroy a company without understanding the controls and/or the business details. Most of the executives I know do know about human error meaning intentional errors at the smaller scale is more about speed and bonus rather than quality at quota.

This guy is genuinely cool. Probably the reason he’s chill is because he’s high IQ and talented and knows the corporate grind can be just as soul crushing as being homeless. He’s been there done that. He’s not delusional about the grass being greener. A lot of people walking around that appear to have a good middle class life are severely depressed.

From my experience as an accountant, In any company the accountants salaries are always the lowest. If you get fired for any reason then you will never get a job, the first thing employers think about you is that you got fired because you stole some money. Currently, everything is computerized, you can find many accounting systems that can do anything, booking, generating financial statements, calculating and paying taxes & doing financial analysis. So you can get anyone to do accounting job because it's just a data entry job.

And you have to take into account all the studying and the efforts needed to get such certifications. Finally, any accounting job is a risky job a small mistake and you will be behind bars.

@@ceb7894 Who's laughing at who in Finance? To get a good finance job you'd probably need a CFA which trust me is no joke, an MBA or masters in Finance or somesort, and you'd have to be ready to work 14-16 hours a day 6 days a week to get above 100k in investment banking or trading. Not to mention the competition is insane, and without connections, you have almost zero chance. Most Finance majors end up working as tellers or financial planners making $15 an hour here in Canada.

Managing your money in your early years is important. People often want to rush out and start living it up, or sharing with everybody. Nothing wrong with sharing, but also have plans for your future at the same time. Try and buy a house and pay it off as soon at you can. That was what I did. I had three jobs at one time, and was barely getting any sleep. And I did any type of job I could find. I manage to pay off my mortgage in less than six years. After that, life got a lot easier, and no fear of losing my home, or becoming homeless. Those six years were hell. But well worth it. Now I just pay HOA fees and utilities each month.

I am an accountant. I'm currently 25 yrs old. I used to be depressed. I overcame depression in 2019. I was depressed for 7 years from 2012 to 2019. It started when my father died. The only person i had. So that shattered me. I lost my motivation to live. I fucked up my studies.i used to be an excellent student. But i graduated anyway. Then i fucked up my jobs as well. Because i didn't see the point of living. My worst year was 2018. I almost killed myself. I STOPPED working for 1 year because depression consumed me. I gave up. I used to watch this videos from mark while i was depressed. So i thought that if i don't kill myself, i will end up like them. So i'd rather kill myself. But thankfully,i overcame depression. Because of these videos from mark, i learned that i have to be kinder to homeless people and try to help them as much as possible. Before, these videos used to make me feel sorry for myself, but now i use this as motivation to become better and as a reminder that we are one bad day away from becoming like them so we should be kind to them and help them.

Well bankruptcy is built into our monetary system as the shaky foundation on which a lot of "free market" control mechanisms have been put into action, e.g OPEC, WTO and many of the post 1980's deals ending in FTA. I hope that in a thousand years, humanity will look back on our time as the socio-economic dark age that it is. The church is IMF + World and central banks, the gospel is liberty and individuality and the end result is an economy so narrowly controlled and passed through so few conglomerates it supersedes Stalin's wettest dreams. My point is that guys like this are inevitable in our current society. He is a systemic outcome yet people are trained to point at him and kick downwards, usually by treating the onset of abuse as the cause of the misery, strapping the horse behind the carriage.

@@SimonTimbers There is a difference between taking money from the system and taking money from people giving it to you*, be the cause to both whichever. A difference does not equal (negating variables). These two variables neither negates nor completes each other, they are though partial subsets of each other. Neither do i expect anything, what i do is that 1. I believe it to be just for the state to give the set money as i believe it to be just for those who gain from it to TAKE the money. 2. i believe it to be due to the partial commonality as mentioned in sentence nr 2 that it is absurd to take the state-money while judging it abuse to take what comes from this set of other people that are NOT abused by desiring to give their own money. 3. It is absurd to call it abuse unless there are abused victims, and it is unreasonable to deem imoral the abuse unless the sum of victims times the abuse is lesser then whatever is gained from the giving itself as well as the sequence of effect thereafter.

@@Julian-we6qg From my perspective, I would love to give to these people, help lift them out of poverty, but no one can reasonably be expected to do so alone. I don't have a strong opinion on beggars, and I understand that this guy is judgemental of other homeless people when maybe he shouldn't be. But if you encourage a system that relies solely on charity, that does not create a system where genuinely bad people with no morals provide for society in any way, so I prefer a system where everyone pays into that can create a life for these people where they don't feel like their challenges are insurmountable and can have some basic dignity, without unnecessarily punishing the financial well being of good people who want to help. With food on the table and a roof over his head, I genuinely think this guy would be more likely to want to participate in the economy. It feels like this guy just gave up, and honestly if I were in his position, I probably would have too. I'm also a little confused about your comment and what the point is that you were trying to get across in all honesty. Can you put it in simpler terms please?

Yeh it is so weird. 2009 doesn't seem like it was 10 years ago, but back in 2009, 1999 seemed like it was AGES ago. And yet both were the same 10 years. I guess time just moves faster and faster the older you get. But I think also it's the fact that each decade no longer has a "feel" to it anymore. The 70's, 80's and 90's all had a distinct "feel" to them. But after the 90's, each decade just feels the same. Generic.
