As a former homeless person, what restored my faith was the employer that hired me tolerating my subpar odor and hygeine while I was working my way off the streets, I never once had to hold a cardboard sign or beg, I just had to show up, act professional to the best of my abilities, it was the lowest point of my whole life but im proud of the way I handled it. Tell ya, you dont know hell until you're kept awake at night too afraid to fall asleep because you dont know if you wont wake up from freezing to death before morning.

Never been homeless, but back in Jan of 2018, I ran into a homeless guy (he was probably in his 20’s) and being around that age myself, I walked up to him, and asked if he wanted me to buy him something. He asked for a chocolate milk, and I said “sure you don’t want something to eat”. He replied “I don’t want to sound selfish, I haven’t eaten in 3 days”. I was like “my dude, what would you like to eat”? We then walked a few meters away, I bought him some sushi and as I went to give it to him, I didn’t realise there was a step, I tripped and fell over. Turns out, I broke my foot (this was the second time I’d broken it, it was actually 4 years to the day when I had first broken it), and he was mortified that I’d hurt myself buying food for him. Weirdly enough, I could weight bare on the foot and then went and bought him the chocolate milk from the 7/11. If you’re that dude that was outside Central Station in Brisbane CBD- I still think of you and hope you’re doing well now.

If a homeless person uses money on drugs, please remember that at some point, addiction becomes trying to stave off being dopesick long enough to get it together and seek help because detoxing alone can kill you.

I remember I used to see this homeless man on my way to school, every day that he was there I would give him the little emergency snacks I kept in my bag, he always looked so grateful, and it made me so happy that I could lift his spirit even that little bit that the snacks lasted. I haven't seen him in a few years now, bc I transferred schools, but I truly hope he's okay❤

Seeing this has inspired me to donate my old clothes to the homeless in my area instead of just throwing them out or selling them secondhand

I remember being in Chicago one time and I met a nice homeless woman. I gave her a bag of Cheez-its and she was reading a book. Later, it was already getting dark when I saw her again and I gave her some breakfast bars and water. She was nice and I enjoyed talking to her. I think about her often.

Socks not just for warm feet . Socks get dry and crusty,it feels like sandpaper a fresh pair of soft socks makes walking alot more comfortable

so basically: give socks, hygiene products (antiperspirants, wet wipes, menstrual products, hand sanitiser, wash cloths, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, detergent), warm meals, and a conversation. shelters and chances for those who can spare them.

A phrase I've used is "we only control our own choices." Meaning... Sure, they might take my donation and spend it on something 'bad' or they might be lying to scam people... But in the end, their choices are theirs and my choices are mine. (Used in a way to say, give what you can, it's not on you to control what others do)

Listening to this sort of stuff reminds me of my 20's I was nearly kicked out by my FIL's girlfriend. Just me, because if she kicked out hubby, FIL would break up with her. Because she's a horrid thing I barely consider human. She knowingly fed me allergens and lied to me about it. Which of course caused me to be sick. She then said I wasn't paying enough rent. Because I had to constantly call in because I was puking! She didn't believe you could be allergic to MSG. Thankfully my mother took me in, eight hours away while my hubby worked on moving us to an apartment. For a long time. I tried to be the kindest person on earth to as many homeless people I could be. Sadly, they got pushed out by druggies. The violent kind. Now I'm back to not even sparing a glance because I don't want to get mugged/followed again. However, I still donate my old clothes, and drop off sanitary products when I can afford to. It really just takes one jerk to make you homeless.

Listening to this reminded me of a game called CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience that's about being unhoused in the UK. Being turned away from the library, busking, park vs shelter sleeping, risky day labor, paperwork like ID, etc are some of the things you deal with in the game.

I once accidentally dropped some money in front of a homeless person. I picked it back up and gave it to them because I had so many small coins in my purse that they kept falling out and that person probably needed it more than me anyways.

I offer a sandwich or similar. If it is turned down they get nothing if they accept I ask what they want. Many in the UK are after money for drugs.

That’s for the “normal” narrator (yellow square). This guy is the “substitute” narrator (for lack of better term) and as such he gets a different icon.
