Homeless population in city of LA sees 10% increase, while LA County up 9%

The 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count results were released Thursday, showing a 9% rise in homelessness on any given night in Los Angeles County and a 10% rise in the City of Los Angeles.

The increase is partially due to States like Alaska removing their homeless via 1st class tickets to Los Amgeles. Nearly 20% of our homeless are encouraged by surrounding states' social services to leave their jurisdiction and move to eitjer California, Washington, or Oregon. Los Amgeles County needs to pass a State of origin law, sending non State himeless residences back to their home state.

I was just in L.A. last night and I must say that I was disgusted by the amount of homeless people I witnessed in Los Angeles. Coming from my hometown in Baltimore, I must say that Baltimore is 1000% times better than what I witnessed in L.A. last night night. If you have more people than houses, and give everyone money, you still have more people then houses. Make it easier to build housing, and we can have more houses than people. I think we need to look at why so many people are homeless, and no, it's not because they are mostly mentally ill drug addicts, though a lot of people think that's the case because there are a lot of very visible people who fit those descriptions. This is, as I see it, mostly a matter of economics. Housing in California is ridiculously expensive, and lower-end jobs and disability benefits don't come close to paying enough to cover basic needs. For the vast majority of unsheltered people, addressing these two issues would solve their problems. For the folks who do need more help, housing first is absolutely the solution. Remember, no one is saying housing only; by giving someone a fixed address you make it possible to deliver the medical care, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment that will changed their lives.

CA homeless report 80% have untreated anxiety or depression - I guess more became mentally ill. Once ill job goes, family and friends will help until they are tired then it is on the street. If one does not want treatment no way to force it.

The cause for this can be a few things such as out of state homeless people coming to california due to the weather. We don't have extreme heat or snowy winters. The other problem is increase in mental illness in people. I have seen people that were normal in their 40s and in a few months homeless because they developed schizophrenia.

Los Angeles is never going to get better. Downtown looks like Gotham City and the rest of it looks like how it does in the movie Elysium. LA only cares about taking care of the rich and pricing everyone out of their homes. Karen Bass is trying her hardest but at least she is doing something unlike Eric Garcetti did.
