Exactly. The Kryptonian symbol for the House of El means hope. We learn this in the movie Man of Steel when Kal-El meets Jor-El via an AI hologram.

@@joaniekeyser4036 To be fair, that wasn't always the case. From his comics debut up until the 1978 live action film, the "S" on Superman's costume was quite literally just "S for Superman." It was the Richard Donnor movie that changed it to the coat of arms for the House of El (previously, the entire Superman costume was canonically created and designed by Ma & Pa Kent for their adopted son), but even that wouldn't remain true forever as the comic Superman: Birthright in 2004 changed the origin of the "S" to be the Kryptonian symbol for "hope" and said that it was part of the Kryptonian flag. This was again changed in 2010 with the "Superman: Secret Origins" story that changed it to be both the symbol of hope and the coat of arms for the House of El. Snyder's version took this explanation of the "S" and rolled with it.
