Chris was a genuinely great guy, he was the real superman as far as I'm concerned. He was a good friend of mine & I would look for him any time I had an audition, rehearsal or performance in Hollywood. Always brought a joint with me so we could slip away from the blvd and I'd smoke him out. But the one time I was out of weed (and had just finished performing) I ran into Chris on one of the few days when he wasn't in costume but this time HE had the weed; smoke me out and we just hung out Sycamore near the alley between Hollywood Blvd & Hawthorne Ave, just chatting for hours. If you knew Chris then you know he actually did most of the talking which was fine with me because I was high and just enjoying the vibe; the energy of the streets of Hollywood after being on stage under the bright lights - sitting on the ground in a dark alley. Now every time I go to Hollywood I bring a joint with me; stop by that same alley we used to hang out in and smoke one in memory of my friend. Rest In Peace, Chris. You finally got your wings.

Man Cristopher was an Icon and a Role Model he deserves a Star right there on that street
@liquidbraino3 жыл бұрын
I kind of feel the same but somebody has to petition for it and pay the $5,000 fee that it costs to have one installed. Most of those stars are paid for by the actor who's name is on the star and they have to petition for it. Plus every star has a symbol on it to indicate which industry they worked (TV, film, theater, music). Chris didn't actually work in any of these industries, he made most of his money by putting on that costume and taking pictures for tips which the police and Mayor in Hollywood consider to be borderline panhandling. The only difference is that they're in costume and not literally asking for money, they'll use phrases like "I work for tips" which they CAN legally say. But some of those guys are literally panhandling and are very aggressive about it - like that guy that dressed up as Batman, he got kicked out of Hollywood and now lived in Vegas. Or that asshole who dresses up like Captain Jack Sparrow, he has literally attacked people with a baseball bat for not giving him money when he wasn't even in costume. They need to get rid of that guy, he's a piece of shit. The city of Hollywood doesn't want any of those people to be there but there isn't much they can do about it in fact over the years it's just become part of the well known culture of Hollywood. They've even made several movies about the costumed characters like the documentary "confessions of a superhero" and the feature film "The Fanatic" staring John Travolta. Several of the actual Hollywood costumed characters are in that movie.

I'm sad every time I go to Hollywood because my friend Chis isn't there anymore. I became homeless around the same time Chris did but everything's good now. Acting helped me to get moved out of the shelter and into my current apartment in North Hills. I guess I kind of got lucky because it could have gone the exact opposite direction if I had allowed myself to fall into a depression or turn to drugs and alcohol in order to cope - like most of those homeless people in Hollywood. Most of them are homeless either because of mental disorders or PTSD and they turn to drugs and alcohol to cope; to kill the pain but in reality it kills their ability to think clearly and live a productive life. Acting IS my therapy and it's what gave me hope when I had reached my lowest point. I now teach a free (Meisner based) acting class for veterans with PTSD at the Sepulveda VA with the goal of preventing veteran suicide through the healing gift of acting. I've been considering doing the same thing at one of the homeless shelters in Hollywood (there's about thirteen of them). I figured if acting can literally save my life and help me get out of the shelter it can do the same for others. I already do homeless outreach with a group of actors from the school that I train at but it didn't occur to me until after the Pandemic started that maybe I should do the same for the homeless in Hollywood as I do for the veterans at the VA (offer a free class). It's all still a work in progress because I'm still a work in progress. I'm only a year and a half through my own training and want to start a non-profit to help the homeless but I feel like I need to complete my own training first.

He once told me that he'd made close to 300 appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Living the dream by day while sleeping in a shelter at night. This video was shot around the same time we became friends and I can relate to what he was going through because I was performing on stage during the day and staying in a different shelter than the one he was in at night. It's such a weird feeling to go from having a standing ovation during curtain call; under bright lights to riding a subway train that smells like ass in order to arrive at a homeless shelter and go to sleep on a cot; next to some crack head; in a big room with 50 other homeless people. But that was seven years ago. Long story short: acting literally saved my life and helped me move out of the shelter and into my current apartment. Oddly enough, a part of me misses those days, even though it was the toughest time I ever went through in my life - I never felt more alive. When you've reached the lowest of lows & hit "rock bottom" there's nowhere else you can go from there but UP. When you've got nothing to lose you'll take the risks that you should have been taking years earlier.

For many of these characters, this was their job. As you can imagine, they were lucky if they could pay their rent. In Hollywood, a scuzzy one-room apartment cost $1000/month, and that's on the low end. Up close, their costumes are often very dirty because they could hardly afford the upkeep.
