Rule has been homeless since the age of 13. He is now 22. Rule has slept outside, in abandoned buildings, on couches, on trains, on buses, and hotel rooms. He says he has experienced every type of homelessness.
It's no way for a kid to grow up. Rule says homeless youth get pushed into all sorts of things. He knows where he is going. He just doesn't know how to get there. Rule doesn't know when his homelessness will end.
Rule says homeless youth get acclimated to a life of homelessness. That over time, you get used to it. No one and especially no child or teenager should have to get used to homelessness.
From that National Network for Youth website [www.nn4youth.o...]:
The vast majority of youth do not become homeless by choice. Many different factors contribute to youth homelessness, but studies suggest that there are common paths to homelessness for young people. The majority of homeless youth have either run away, been kicked out of unstable home environments, abandoned by their families or caregivers, involved with public systems (foster care, juvenile justice, and mental health), or have a history of residential instability and disconnection.
From new research by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago on understanding and addressing youth homelessness [voicesofyouthco...]:
1 in 10 young adults ages 18-25 experienced a form of homelessness over a 12-month period.
That’s 3.5 million young adults. About half of them involved explicitly reported homelessness while the other half involved couch surfing only.
1 in 30 youth ages 13-17 experienced a form of homelessness over a 12-month period.
That’s about 700,000 youth. About three-quarters of them involved explicitly reported homelessness (including running away or being kicked out) and one-quarter involved couch surfing only.
If you've been following Invisible People you've probably heard me share that I often wonder how many homeless youths end up being homeless adults later in life. If we are ever going to end homelessness, we must look at all demographics of homelessness. Over the recent years, the sector has prioritized chronic homeless adults and we have gotten better at "closing the back door." Although I do support for various reasons getting the most vulnerable off the streets, in many ways we have left the front door wide open.
As we have seen these past few weeks how young adults can affect positive change in ways us adults are not able to, homeless youth need the same opportunities to grow up and make our world a better place. We must make ending youth homelessness and family homelessness just has much of a priority as ending all homelessness!

About Invisible People:
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Homeless isnt normal. All sorts of strange circumstances happen on a person by person basis. It's not as uncommon as you think for 12 or 13 year olds to be homeless. Unfortunately, there is usually an underlying issue with the parents. As hard as it is for people to realize. Some people really just dont want their own kids.

Over that period of time I went on the road with bands and stayed in first rate hotels! I also had an entire but substandard apartment for 2 years, with a full bathroom and kitchen! I also lived in my car at a Walmart parking lot, at which I managed to have access to full hygiene facilities. During this time I also worked at a restaurant and got healthy meals daily which also had bathroom facilities... And there were homeless people who lived better than I did! He knows what freedom is. He stands on the outside and sees the world we live in today for what it is. We live in a rough society. Things are getting worse and worse all the time but what can you control? Yourself, your surroundings, your outlook. He knows freedom physically and spiritually. For me personally the ability to smile at the worst of times is an absolute blessing. Laugh at your problems they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Laugh at death we'll all be there eventually. The earth needs more people to understand happiness is not only a choice but a lifestyle. If you want to be happy you have to live it. If you want to be free you have to live it.

People w/ disabilities are also consistently used & abused for their once a month ssn check. My mother being 1 & was paying $600 to $700 a month to sleep on her siblings sofa's. I can't believe how rude viewers can be. I don't understand why some even watch this channel if all they want to do is put others down. Because many of us have a heart and happen to care for life and want only the best for people, that makes us the stupid one's somehow. I have helped many people in my life, done what I can to make a little bit of a difference in someone's life. I don't have alot if money or things..but I'm secure and happy, and I have enough. I'm not the bad guy because I want to help someone reach their dream, or help someone get their foot in the door for a job etc. The difference between myself and the people that bash others, make fun of those in need who are really trying to better themselves is..I'm happy in life, I don't take people or life for granted, I care about a better world, and I want what's best for everyone. When I lay my head down to sleep at night, I know I've done my best..and I thank God everyday!

What was their family life like, what's going on with their mother father or any other family. Why did people turn their backs on them, or were they coming out of foster care. I always have so many unanswered questions during these interviews. I love watching your videos, and wish I could help everyone of them. It took me being consistently homeless from age 18 to 27 before I finally did it, and took control of my life. Now I'm on the tiny house movement. It's happening. @Snooty Fox clearly not that lazy if he is homeless and still committed to study, speaking to congress, keeping himself cleam, and has goals to lift himself up out of his situation.

Hi - there's no way to know if this Gofund me site is from him, only 3 people donated so looks odd. Is there any way he can get in touch with me directly to offer a more substantial donation?

I can guarantee it's from Rule and only he has access to it. The reason only a few people have donated is Rule just created it last week and not when this video was uploaded. He contacted me and I suggested he start one.

He's young and able bodied, I don't understand why he's not working. I was homeless before too but I pulled myself out of it. I know people can fall on hard times, but my question is what are you doing to get out of it? what are you doing to change your situation.?

My question exactly...sadly some people grow accustomed to homelessness and prefer it over working a 9 to 5.

Klub Member like I said. You made up a god in your head. My God is amazing. My God will see you through absolutely anything you’re facing in life. Have you read the book of Job? Clearly not. Satan preys on us and when you turn from God nothing will go right for you but God still loves us all. You can keep your foul language to yourself though, thanks.

@@GodsChildJess I didn't make up anything I either know or don't know I don't have time for beliefs because that's foolish if your god exist tell him to show yourself but of course you're going to make excuses for why the all powerful god can't do something like show himself

This brother seems really kind and intelligent. I find it amazing, how he keeps smiling and remains so upbeat. He is young, has limitless potential and I believe he will find his way out of this terrible situation, a situation he should never have been put in to begin with. Almost every single homeless person I see on this channel, seems nice. They have all been let down and failed by society. Its so sad.
