Isn't the province supposed to address housing problems. It's reported in the news that Quebec is being matched in national funding for what it spends on housing. Other urban centers like Toronto have housing problems because the province is not budgeting for housing in Toronto. the national govt must match funds directly with the City and what little it receives from the province. If politicians chose to blame each other, then of course that is chaos. Both must take action.

These were the students at university. "We are adults and there is drugs and alcohol, we understand that, and we are idiots." The woman who drops her kids off at school and goes to her law office, we can understand she is bothered by this. - well not exactly, these people give her an income. Her children are bothered, the school is bothered, her kids could get jabbed by a needle, or assaulted by a crazy person, or have to walk in pee during recenss - the lawyer is not bothered in her day. IF she was bothered, she would remove her children and take them to work to be in a safer environment. How stupid.

Im from Longueuil, never seen an homeless encampment in my entire life there (I left quebec in 2016, in alberta now), so seeing these place in the video that I recognize with homeless encampment is very shocking to me. I have never voted liberal, i think its the only party I have never voted for, I don't really know anyone who did either. In Quebec people often say that the liberal party is the party of the english speaking people, while french speaking mainly vote bloc. That's why you always see the island of montreal really red, but as soon as you move out of montreal it's bloc everywhere. English speaking in quebec often are from Ontario or are immigrants and that's usually the liberal base. In Longueuil people definitely don't vote liberal, it has always been a Bloc stronghold as far as I know.

I live in Ontario in a smaller farming community of around 15,000. No jobs, migrant workers get all the greenhouse jobs. No or very little industry and a 2 room apartment is 1,300 plus utilities. Who the hell can afford this crap. Food is out of control, rent is out of control and in our small town there are 2 encampments of homeless people. All Canadian and all in dire straits. I help where I can and she is right, it was all after covid.

I am on food bank… cannot get out of the loop if I make too much money I need to move out of subtitled housing but cannot afford rent too high… I am living in an horrible building where there is huge harassements by men who are mostly insane, used to be in jail, or on drugs etc…. Terrible

The only way I think we can fight the homeless problem that's out of control as much as this is tough love. These are grown-ups. These aren't little children. You come down hard on them with enforcing the law. You don't give them a special carve out from the law. Justice isn't blind when we do that. It's some point it's going to be so hard for them to live this kind of lifestyle that they will have to make changes in their life. Or they will have to move or worse. But guess what, that's life. We're taking away the thing that could help these people. Giving them everything they want just makes them further drug addicted and adds to the homeless problem.. they're basically giving crack to the addict and wondering why crack addicts still exist.

Great story. You have the homeless when housing is tight. Most people cannot deal with the homeless as this story shows. There are drugs, drunkenness, etc but these have always been problems - with or without homelessness. Seems the govt needs to build homes because there is a shortage of housing.

But even with ample housing, too many people are so addicted to whatever they're doing that they don't even seek help. That's why there are empty housing projects in the US (especially the West Coast and more pronounced in Oregon). As for Portland, Oregon, the real reason why the city hasn't recovered from the pandemic is because the mental health system in that state collapsed in 2021. Now it wasn't instant, but chronic underfunding in the state's mental health system caused Portland to shrink quickly.

I think that we agree on this point. With housing for the homeless, people will ignore the drug problem. As for the drug problem, defunding the mental health system as did Portland, doesn't cure the problem either. If you want a problem to go away, then ignoring it is not a good solution.
