Homelessness surged during the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing cities around the country to find new solutions to address the growing issue. NBC News’ Dasha Burns reports from Denver, Colorado, on how Mayor Michael Hancock is trying a new approach by providing dedicated campsites to homeless people across the city.

What saddens me most about this and the person who inherited a house which he owns outright but is under constant threat of losing it over property taxes is, I can easily see myself in those situations. Fifteen years in an apartment, paid his rent, lives on social security, and for no good reason-maybe some trust fund hipsters wanted his place-he’s living in a tent. We are a big, rich country. We should have a housing surplus. People should be buying homes and opening storefronts for no money down. We need to bring back Common Sense (Thomas Paine, look it up). We have replaced taxation without representation with an economy in which people are one layoff or medical issue away from total ruin. America isn’t supposed to be about ‘maximizing revenue’ by overcharging and underpaying people.

I had trouble understanding the man in the video. So, I don't know the reason he lost where he lived. In some States such as mine after a certain age, 65 or so, you no longer have to pay property taxes. You're right, in most cases you have to have 20% down of the house purchase price to buy one. And, I see all these fancy houses and apartments built all the time. Well, the counties should see to it somehow that housing is affordable (not given) for young or old or not well to do. But, we all have to live within our means.

We let anyone get houses with loans in the 2000’s. Look it up. I get what you’re saying. Not everyone can pay for houses. I’m trying to buy a house and it sucks. I can’t afford these prices. But I don’t expect to have a house that I can’t afford. Prices will fix themselves. They can’t stay this high for rent or buying. People can’t afford them.

I’ve been volunteering at a soup kitchen in downtown Denver for years and part of my job is to listen to the stories of all the people I meet. I can honestly say, the stories are getting scarier and scarier as time passes. It used to be “oh well I was kicked out when I was 16 and got into drugs” or “I got cancer and lost my job and house.” Stories that are sad and shouldn’t have happened but explainable. Nowadays it’s “I had a job paid my rent and one day I got home and I was getting evicted.” No sudden tragedy, no screwup, no drugs or crime that got them into homelessness. Just got screwed over. That’s what people need to understand nowadays. It can happen to ANYONE. Ive met people with masters and ba’s, people in STEM, people who went to some of the best colleges in the nation and they all end up on the street for no other reason than a few incidences of bad luck. As a kid I was told “if you work hard, go to a good school, get a degree in a good field and then work hard at your job then you’ll do great!” Turns out that was all a lie, you can do all of that and end up on the street or none of that and end up in a mansion.

It used to be more or less a a free market where landlords would raise and lower their rents based on supply and demand but nowadays firms are buying up houses in mass meaning they can drive up rent for hundreds of houses. Then there’s only a few apartments and houses left that are affordable and so everyone goes for those driving up the prices of whatever’s left. It’s an endless cycle of over inflation.

@Hey-Okayyy TV Fair enough, it’s rare for people to come home and find their stuff thrown on the street and illegal without notice. However, it’s not uncommon especially in denver to come home one day and be told your rent is increasing by hundreds of dollars. Recently happened in a building not far from me where they jacked prices up by $800 for one man. I mean if you’re low income you can barely afford a $50 rise in your rent much less $100+.

So the guy with the beard was put out on the onset of winter. Wow! There's no recourse? I know this, Denver, metro Denver has been under major construction and they have raised 3 or 4 story apartment buildings everywhere. The city is over crowded and intolerable. A few places I called asking for the price of a 1 bedroom were all about 2,500 a month. The older apartments are no better, everyone is grabbing the money and leaving good people to fend for themselves..pretty heartless..living in an ice fishing tent in the winter must be one of the worst ways to suffer I have heard of..

Retirement is a huge killer of people -- sitting in a chair all day doing nothing literally kills people. So, even retired people need something to do. Those that have money can do volunteer work or get into politics, for example, while people without money many need to find a job to both occupy their time and provide income. I don't see anything wrong with that. In my own life, my father is currently 82 years old and has already retired 3 times. Yet he still works harder every day than I do. I even expect both my parents to outlive me because of the way they live their lives today and in the past.

My daughter is once again facing being homeless with her two kids. Her landlord sold the apartment complex and the new owner is raising her rent $400. She’s been there for three years after being displaced by her previous landlord who did the same thing. She’s in Montana. I agree with another commenter, every state needs affordable housing. In Colorado where I used to live, the same apartment I rented just 4 years ago went from $1050 a month to nearly $1550 a month. Meanwhile the employer I worked for in my career field pays exactly the same for my position. After living in the same place for years, I too was given notice to move, as a new corporation had bought my apartment building in Oregon, and they were going to remodel and rent the apartments at a very high rent, over $2000 a month. Because it is also happening everywhere, even tho I have a stable retirement income, an excellent rental history, I am now living in my Jeep and tent. With the temps that have come with the heat wave, its so dangerous. As a 63 year old woman, this is terrifying. The waiting lists for Senior Subsidized Apts is over 3 years long. Something HAS to change. This is so wrong and there are thousands and thousands of people this is happening to.

I live in Denver. The rent for a run down one bedroom is over 1k a month. I have seen two bedrooms in a decent part of town run higher than my mortgage. There are 12k new people coming a month to Denver metro. There aren't places for people.

My heart goes out to all these homeless people. My family and I don't have much but we have been able to do is to adopt one of our local homeless ladies. We give her financial support as much as he can share with her. And also give her other supplies that she may need. Most of all I always tell her that we love her and we call her by her name so that she knows that she's not invisible. And I say this in a way not to be prideful or speaking praise from anyone. Just to encourage others to help in any way they can. Monique has a disability which I'm not sure of so putting her in a woman's home or in some other place is not what she wants. And we choose to respect that is still love her and care for her. Of this man said at the end being homeless takes a strong person will need has been on the streets I believe for about 12 to 15 years. So I consider her a very strong person mentally and physically. Though I know she lives with a mental disability daily.

Someone said on here and made a very good point - in this state, you can't get a single apartment for less than 1300 at the very least. That's' going to be very hard to find. Who is letting that happen? Don't blame the people in a state; blame the institution that keeps us this poor. Why aren't you looking to the banks and how much control they have over the economy? Why should people not have the American dream? The way our taxes are garnished is against the law. If everyone got back the taxes that are stolen from us, then we would all be just fine. Instead, we are dealing with inflation prices that no one can afford and didn't really get this bad until people moved here to smoke weed and take advantage of a health care system that has been failing us for decades. Our health care is the worst! On top of that, there has been people trying to save us by creating programs so that people don't go broke from the healthcare system - maybe they are fighting cancer. People voted against this improvement, mostly business owners, because they would have to pay and take care of their employees. This is what some of you voted for, don't blame people for being poor when you didn't actually care about them in the first place.

This was a very good and powerful article/video. Most of the homeless population are good people and have amazing talents and character. They get a bad rap from the drug addicts. That's requires the same approach as this but in addition to counseling and maybe a mentor from the community. Actually no it’s blackrock and all these corporations that are buying houses and paying for them in cash thus raising prices. It’s part of the United Nations agenda 2030 “you’ll own nothing and be happy.” Part of the plan is abolition of private property.

This is a good thing people...they will get access to healthy meals, showers, their own space to sleep and keep belongings....and it will be supervised. Don't worry about the safety. Allowing people to set up a tent unsupervised is what is unsafe.

@Smarty Pants Why do homeless people need "tracked".. Because they do not have phones on them and being tricked, i mean tracked, like you are? Homeless are no more dangerous than anyone else. You want to find the "murders," look no further than political figures, bankers, military, religious leaders, police, and ceo's of big corporations. Read some history, were the biggest murders through out history the homeless villagers or the kings..

@@MD77SA that is 750 dollars a month for a tent and porta potty..With absolutely no space to roam. I am pretty sure they have a guard to get in and get out, with set times,and people who sign you in and out and watch your every move.. This is basically an outside prison, that they are trying to force people i and pay for. It like the worst apartment community/jail there is... You thought you could hear your neighbors through a wall.. They have a bunch of people in tents packed in side by side on a small plot of land. This is just an investor extorting the poor to pay off his real estate land investment.He is using them as a tool to buy the land they are on and once he owns it out right will probably kick the homeless back off after he is done using them as a source of income.

This is everywhere! Not just Skid Row but in every state. What happened to America? That poor old man worked his whole life and Social Security doesn't pay enough to afford housing. Why does the US treat it's elderly like crap while billionaires live in castles and don't pay taxes?

So as long as we put TENTS in nice rows it's better than on the streets, winter can get down to minus zero and right now it's 98 how about a hail storm with golf ball sized hail maybe some 60mph winds, looks good on paper but not much better than living in a paper house...

The sad thing is that the majority of people think the homeless are all drug addicts, or mentally ill. That is not so, these are regular people and families.

@@hectorheck1353 Yes, that's exactly what I said. Not EVERYONE is a drug addict or mentally ill. Some people don't want to be helped, they'd rather stay in the streets and do their drugs until they re ready to quit or they overdose and die. The mentally end up in an erratic cycle of hospitals, facilities, prisons, back on the streets again. Then again I met families, single people, working hard,getting behind in bills, and ending up living out of a car, which is functional homelessness.

@@incisivecommenter5974 The lionshare are drug addicts, mentally ill and grifters. The ones that want help are going through the shelters and getting resources. I support them 100%. It's not what the encampments are about. These need to be busted up and the people in them need to be moved along. .

Homeless population is growing in every cities in the US. Where is American Dream? The bottom line is that our families are disappearing? Parents are poor and homeless, and kids have no home to go and become homeless, too.

There is a similar program in my city too. We even have volunteers to help connect ppl with family/friends & if successful they are given a bus ticket
