Here is the first round of upgrades for my Homemade 2x72" Belt Grinder. I upgraded the motor to a 1 1/2 HP Baldor motor, installed a proper power switch, and modified the platten assembly and mounting brackets. Its much better now, and ready to get to work on some projects.

Would adding a step pulley be a good, or bad idea? Being able to change the speed might allow greater control over what you are doing, but I am not sure if it would be a good idea. Nice job though. I like how you approached this.

It probably would be a good idea. I was grinding a large piece yesterday and could have used it at a higher speed. 👍

I found an excellent belt speed calculator on line. I built mine with a 1hp geared motor and it only spins up to 500 rpm. But with the appropriate pulleys I'm able to run it from 100sfm to 5,000 . Motor sheave is 7" pulley is 1.25" and the drive wheel is 5".the motor came out of an older lapping machine and I was able to use the base as the stand.

If you installed the non-drive side bearing on the inside of the frame it would have solved your space issue. Would have been a bit more aggravating to install of course. Just my opinion. Great video by and great job on the grinder

You have done a great job and I would like to ask you one question if I may, How can you make sure the belt will not come out from any of the coil due to the motor speed, specially the front top one?
@homebuiltshop
@homebuiltshop 7 жыл бұрын
+Moosa Omran there's really nothing to keep the belt from coming off. You need to make sure all the pulleys are in line, then adjust the alignment with the tracking wheel. If it's all in line, the belt should stay on.

I have it 2:1 right now. Do you think it should run slower than 1700 rpm? It works great, sometimes I get some burning on wood so I could see the benefit of it being slower there.

Nice new "Blingy" upgrades. Let us see you round a corner on 1/4" steel or sumthin! I hear at least a top shield is advisable. On that comes over the top and down a bit to deflect grittys that ride allthe way around belt to smack yo inda face!
