Great addition to the shop Matty, not an easy build. If i may comment, piston rod material generally comes in 3 flavours, AISI 1045 with thin hardened chrome 0.1 to 0.2mm deep, AISI 1045 induction hardened to a depth of 1 to 4mm ( thicker on bigger diameters), then hard chrome, AISI 4140 induction hardened 1 to 4mm, and hard chrome. Generally, if the rod is exposed to harsh environments, it is induction hardened. Nice machining. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Matty, Been following your videos for some time now, In my Shop I almost exclusively used HSS Sutton Taps, I have used other cheaper brands and just had them break at the worst possible time. I have found that paying more for and getting the HSS Suttons means that tapping is no longer a dreaded job for me anymore. I also used a tap follower when ever I can and this aids greatly in reducing broken taps. Thanks for taking the time to film and share your projects. cheers Byron

Good idea to have the 26mm stub arbor. I had to change from MT3 to R8 on my tooling when I got the Bridgeport. We were supplied with P&N or Sutton taps and dies in the schools. There was a policy to use Australian made stuff back then. They were nice tools but quite expensive now.

Hi Matty. A few tips to use if you want to. It is usually better to cut through case hardening slowly in one pass, this saves the tip corner when taking multiple shallow passes. Holding the round part in the mill vice will be significantly more stable with two vee blocks. 4 equidistant clamping faces instead of 3 unequal faces, and less marking.. A simple way to cut matching dovetails without any maths is to use pins with a diameter of 1/3rd of the dovetail depth. The distance will be the same over the male and female parts. ( 60 degrees only ).

Cheers Matty, Off to a real nice start...That pin material gives a nice finish. Don't worry about a couple goof up's we've all been there. Most of my taps are Greenfield, Morse and Cleveland. I try to stick to the spiral tip or fluted, night and day difference compared to a standard tap. ATB.....

I bought a set of metric taps & dies by Volkel German made. Came as a set in a nice box (tin) 3mm to 10mm 3 of each + one die each size. So far they have been great. They are H.S.S. Was told to keep away from Carbon steel ones by a pro. Also have lots of imperial taps & dies which are all British made & very old buy very good. I also think Dormer & Presto do good ones too. Nice work. The fun's always in working around the foulups! For Taps, I use Titex, Guhring, Prototyp and so on, all industrial quality stuff picked up for cheap on various forums. The taps I've bought new "over the counter" have always been pretty disappointing, but not as bad as the stuff I've had from china.

Another nice outcome, you are truly a man after my own heart Matty, Plans, Drawings, what are they and why do you need them. A good 99% of what I make comes straight *from my head,* I sometimes joke about designing things in what is a bit of a piss-take on Fusion 360 and say I designed it in *Confusion 24/7* In regard to taps, I exclusively use spiral fluted plug taps and I have only managed to break 1 so far, and it was an M6 that was getting a little blunt after tapping maybe a 100 holes with it. I did manage to find some Aussie Sutton taps from a supplier over here in Bangkok, but they weren't cheap, and I have since found a supplier of Japanese-made taps that are pretty good and a bit cheaper than the Sutton taps. The only exception is when I buy taps and dies that I think may never get used again, and I buy cheap Chinese crap and end up regretting it. Anyhoo, keep up the good work and good luck cutting that Buttress thread 👍

@@MattysWorkshop Most of the good taps I have are Dormer brand, have some gun taps which I think are made by Gorilla and they are excellent with a tapered lead ground.I find good taps hard to source or very expensive. I did get some nice metric taps with spiral flutes that are pretty nice quality for the price.

In Australia HSS Sutton are my go-to taps, but I wince at the price. One thing for sure is no matter how much of a dead eye Dick I think I am, using a tap follower in the same set-up you used to drill the hole makes a huge difference.

Gday Ashley, I’ve been using Hangsterfers 5030 in the mill and lathe, it is messy on the lathe but it works great, I’ve noticed a big improvement in tool life and the coolant is transparent it’s really easy to work to scribe lines, I used to use Penrite and always had trouble with it going off and evaporating fast, Hangsterfers lasts a lot longer, hope this helps, cheers

I'm having a good run with a Gearwrench set of taps and dies. The Gearwrench part number is 82812 and it contains 114 pieces. This kit has sizes that include SAE 4-40 to 3/4 and 3mm to 18mm sizes (plus some of the common BSP sizes for gas threads) but there are smaller kits available. It's Taiwanese and it seems to be well made. I love the racheting handles and the hex shaped dies (no slippage!). I haven't broken a tap yet so they seemed to have tempered them just right. I've cut threads in brass, aluminium, cold rolled and 4140. The only thing don't like is the taps don't have a center drill in the head of them so starting threads in the mill isn't straightforward, but I've managed to get around that by mounting them in a drill chuck. Not ideal, but it works. When I get some time I'll make an adapter. I haven't been able to find a current price but, as an indication, I didn't get much change out of $500 about 2 years ago. I got them through Total Tools in Fyshwick. They currently carry the kit 3887 (77 pieces) which seems to have most sizes that you would need at $269. gearwrench.com.au

For the last ten years as a mechanic I've been able to get taps out of the store room at work. Any time a tap felt like it was getting a little dull it went in the trash and I went and got a new one. But what really happened most of the time is I had to dig through the trash for the tap I just threw out because the store room was out and I was halfway through a job.

What ho Matty, As all the girls say ,my what a big one you have. Sorry couldn't resist😅 My thoughts when you were turning all that lovely metal away, why not just make the whole thing bigger than planned? Second thought being, if you find tapping holes scary you can drill bigger holes than the books suggest especially for longer threaded holes or tougher metals, without significant loss of strength. For M6 you can drill a 5.2 or 5.3 to give 75% or 65% thread engagement. For your M10x1, it being a precision item, maybe 9.1 or 9.2 would have allowed you to tap without that ominous feeling. I quote from an excellent book in the WPS of books,#12, by "tubal cain" the English one not the childrens shop class teacher from America .

I don't know Gordo, but I buy Widia, Guhring, the like. They cost more, but work much better and are less likely to break, specially the powdered metal ones.

Tapping 4140 with chrome alloy taps is asking a bit as they are intended as thread chasers, not thread cutters except for use in non ferrous metals, better to use HSS taps. I find that paying the extra for HSS taps and dies does pay off in the long run. Bordo do list HSS taps, but not dies, if you want HSS dies, then check out Goliath. They come from the same stable as Bordo, so your suppliers should be able to source them.

Im thankful for having a mill that i wont ever change out... Well, maybe i get another one at some point, but my large mill is iso40, and that just makes things perfect... Any tooling i have to make can have 40 taper, and that is a solid slab o` metal right there... For my baby mill, i make 16mm cyl shanks, as she uses a mt2 with a schaublin er25 collets and regofix body, which in the little emco makes for a highly precise setup, but it aint skookum... Much care and gentlest approach are most highly advised... I suppose that 25mm/1in is somewhat better, given the math behind skookumness of steel profiles, but still, its a bloody shame you could not put, say, a 40 taper on the back of `er wha` for some solid chucking... That boring head would look much more refined with a machine taper shank... Not trying to talk shit, just my view of machine tools in general... I dont really like cylindrical shanks(of course, drills and endmills, boring bars and such i understand, but those are cutters and active tools) on tooling... Also, for machining such chunky parts with accursed round shanks, you shoulda used a collet block in the vise... I have a spare 3 jaw, 10inch, on a plate for general holding of round shit on the mill... Given the ability to shift the tables, the rounout of the chuck doesnt matter for a lot of things, but its my go to when i need to put centers on opposing sides with precision, or bolt hole patterns in faces of round parts... Coulda been useful for this aswell, and for making the bar bores, at least the ones on the face... All the best!

Hi Matty Great work as usual. Quick question, why use a slot instead of a stand gib? Guhring taps and drills are also good. I inherited a lot of CEJ taps, don’t know how old they are but they still cut well.

RE: Tap brands. . . Not sure there IS a good one!! I use whatever I can get my hands on for that teason. Will say that the only ones I've broken were dull, so when I find a dull one now it goes in the scrap.

G'day mate, looks like you know what you're doing and perhaps you can give me some advice. I recently bought a ZAY 7045FG drill mill from China and when in use, it shakes like a bastard. I can't feel any slop in the spindle. I thought the spindle bearings needed adjustment but they seem good without any movement. When the machine is in operation and spinning, with no load, it seems smooth without any shaking but when in use, even with a 4mm end mill bit on mild steel, it vibrates as I said above. It's got me beat, what the shit could be doing this. If you can offer any clues, I'd appreciate it. Cheers mate.

I have BORDO and they are a good tap but my go to tap is DORMER but they are expensive but BORDO are not cheap either and what's more they will all break when you don't want them to.

I dunno.....boring heads professionally made are two a penny on EBAY.......what would be fantastic would be a boring and facing head.......that is something to really write home about as they cost a mint and don't come cheap. Facing the bottom of a hole or facing a counterbore is impossible on a mill without a facing head capability......it can be done easily on a lathe but not a mill.
