No lathe, no problem :D
One afternoon of work with limited tools.
I would not use these wheels on road going vehicle, for that I would build a proper jig but they do not shake below 100km/h which is about 5x more than what I would consider the safe speed of the pickup they were build for.

Nice job. I like that you’ve kept it simple and just got on with the project as opposed to embarking on several side quests to get the job done. I’ve been procrastinating banding some wheels for years now. One of the blocks I’ve had is to do with safety and using the wheels on the road. Over time and having trawled the internet for opinions on this, I’ve come to the conclusion that, if your welds have good penetration and you’ve maintained reasonable accuracy, these are no more unsafe than any other wheel on the road. If you can weld the rest of the vehicle, why not the wheel? Anyway, thanks for the vid. All the best.

Thanks for commenting, if you do a good job of welding them and make sure they are straight there is no reason they shouldn't be safe... unless you go for something stupidly wide. It has been done since 50s or maybe even earlier. These wheels aren't the best example but they were fine under 70-80 km/h (above that there were some vibrations but I am not sure how much was caused by the wheels as this car had drive line vibrations at that speed before) I have made a pair of 2cm wider wheels for my Fiat 126p about 10ish years ago and they were fine for 2000km on road and little bit on track also. I also have problems with procrastination. Deadlines help, I take the pickup to a car meet once per year where I can run it on closed road for slalom and drag race and I try to change something on it every year (this year the wheels) so I usually start working on it the weekend before and try to rush things (I originally wanted to build a jig to hold the grinder and help align everything) :D

Great video ! Exactly what I need to do for my Morris Minor wheels that are 4j that need widening to get tyres that fit and don't cost a fortune.. I need to ask, what gauge of metal did you use? I appreciate you helping me out if at all possible. TX Mr fixit Chris :)

I measured the thickness of the original rim (in this case 2.5mm) and used the same thickness of metal for the band.

On the inside just some old paint I had left over from other projects to seal any pinholes and outside just spray can orange.

@@Skili19 great I thought it was for the possible pin holes, I thought it was some special sealing paint, thanks for your reply
