Homemade Brake Drum Puller

Trying to pull the brake drum off an old tractor is next to impossible. The large wheels are somewhere between 16-18" in diameter on the brake drum. There are several techniques many people use including tapping or pounding the drum with a hammer, using a torch to heat the metal, and of course lots of penetrating oil. However, it seems like, when dealing with brake drums, having a proper puller could go along way. Sometimes, pullers are readily available, any not may tool rental places have a puller large enough for a job like this. Hence, the DIY Homemade Brake Puller.

Hope you got it sorted out by now. I'm in the exact same process having the same issues. On a side note, regarding your wasps problem, you don't want to attack them or they will send a signal. One other thing good to kee^in mind: when you smack one it sends a pheromon signal in the air while dying and that triggers the attack of all neighbouring wasps. That might be why you got so many flying by (they could have smelled something). Thanks for the vid dude !

I'm in the same boat. Ford 3000. I even wore the same camo shorts. I used 4x4 cribbing with bottle jack and still didn't trust it. Going to search for a puller. Thanks.

We cut a hole in the drum to access the shoe dial adjuster, with a grinder after days of pounding, spraying, torches, puller. in the opening we could get a chisel in between the hub and brake drum. that worked after 30 minutes on one. the other side we ground the entire front face of the drum off all the way around and chiselled it off. be careful not to grind into the wheel cylinder. that was a bit quicker but it is very frustrating.

That is great safty always.. my friend die almost two years ago fixing a drive shaft and using scissor jack with out jack stands hes chest got crushed . Safety always and keep up the good work

jack stands!! or live life in the fast lane! safety 1st!!! replace seals B4 replacing the brakes!!! drill a hole thru the drum, not thru the axle flange so you get penetrating oil behind the drum! try kroil penetrating oil! & you're finished put never seize on mating surfaces but not a lot! maybe local auto parts stores rent a drum puller?

The local auto store has a puller Kit you can borrow, but none of the pullers in the kit have enough reach. I just purchased a puller with a 17” spread that should work.

You sprayed penetrating oil that is dangerous, brake pads soak it up and then No brakes at all I think a good bearing puller should work, sitting with the same problem now

I ordered a bearing puller just haven’t gotten back to it. But because my pads are toast anyway the penetrating oil doesn’t matter.
