I had this same problem with the cloudy film on my glasses and dishes looked filmy. I used the "Lemi Shine" product in my EMPTY dishwasher and ran it to clean out the hard water build up. This made a world of difference! Everything is crystal clear and clean now! Bottom line---run your dishwasher through a cleaning cycle with some sort of cleaner that contains citric acid.

This is a great idea, but I would like to add a suggestion with film or hard water. Vinegar first off can damage a dishwasher if used in the dishwasher jet-dry compartment. I know this because mine was eaten through and I had a tech come out and tell me a lot of people don't know that is what happens over time. Instead, take a cup put the vinegar into it. Set it upright on the bottom rack and it's safer. The dishwasher and your dishes get cleaned at the same time too! The vinegar can eat away at the washers and get into other things inside of the dishwasher. I usually add 1 CUP of distilled white vinegar and it works beautiful!

Thumbs up on the white vinegar. I moved into a country home and the dishwasher had a stainless steel interior but it was all cloudy. I didn't want to use the Jet Dry either because of the septic system. The vinegar really did the trick. My glasses just sparkle and the diswasher looks amazing now. Good tip!

I make my own finishing rinse! I use an old Dawn dish soap, so it can squirt out. I put 3 cups white wine vinegar to 1 1/2 cups water and then I add about 1/8 cup of Mrs. Stewarts Blueing. You can get this in the laundry isle. Blueing makes glass, crystal and windows nice and clean. Blueing is in all the commerical products, think of Dawn dish soap, oxyclean, tide detergent, ect.!! This works great for us!

You're welcome. :) If anyone is having trouble finding borax, like you stated in the video, check your local hardware stores in the cleaning supplies aisle. Many times it can be cheaper there than at the grocery store. I found the Lemi Shine powder at Walmart in the dish detergent aisle on the shelf with the rinse agents and dishwasher cleaners.

We have hard water full of calcium and lime. We add about 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar to each load and our dishes come out sparkling clean now. Thanks for sharing the dish soap recipe.

I just did a quick google search for Lemi Shine in Canada and a website popped up called "Canadian Tire". I checked it out and they sell the Lemi Shine for $4.49. It's located somewhere in Ontario.

Not sure if anyone has told you but the vinegar has two more really good benefits for use in your dishwasher - first because of the high acidity it helps to sanitize your dishes without the use of extra energy for super heating your water, and secondly it cuts through the grease build up in your washer and drains ... A repair man shared this one with me - once a month heat a qt of vinegar in your microwave and turn on your dishwasher (no soap or dishes) and wait for it to start spraying water t

I like this recipe and was eager to try it since you said it works great for hard water, however, when I use it the soap cup that has the little locking lid, it clumps into a hard chunk and it doesn't rinse out of there, even though the lid has unlocked like it is supposed to. The pre-wash soap cup works fine but not the other one. Have you had a problem with this and if so do you have a remedy?

I tried everything, straight vinegar, plain citric acid, borax, etc. Nothing worked until I ran an empty cycle with the cleaner to rid the inside of the dishwasher of the hard water/mineral build up. The inside of my machine is white plastic so I didn't notice the build up right away. When I ran my fingers across the surface, I then knew what to do. If you have a store that sells canning supplies, they usually carry citric acid with that stuff. Amazon.com carries the Lemi Shine products too.

I buy my baking soda from an online company called "Boxed" It's a 13.5 pound resealable bag for $8. The prices are reasonable and delivered to your door. If you spend $50, shipping is free and believe me $50 adds up fast. Hope you try them. Paper products are cheaper than Costco

If you have really hard water, take the Lemi Shine a step further by adding 1 teaspoon to your detergent dispenser with the detergent before each load. It keeps the film from becoming a nasty build up again.

THANK YOU for posting this!!! I ran out of dishwasher detergent and paying full price at the only store in our little town would have been expensive. I had all the ingredients except the kosher salt. I saw another video that used Epsom salt. I used that and it worked fine. My dishes look as good as with the name brand detergent. :)

Penny's Kitchen Same here. Ive tried every variation & rinse cycle combination under the sun & I still have a whitish cloudy film on all my glasses & clear glass dishes. Great concept if it works for some folks. I've given up & Im back to using Cascade. :(

Penny's Kitchen I did, too. I used homemade dishwashing detergent for 10 months & kept having dull silverware & a film on things. I finally bought a box of the cheap store brand detergent...right away, those issues started clearing up. The homemade works for a lot of people...but not everybody. I tweaked the ingredients many times, used vinegar for rinse...nothing worked. Store bought one works for me. I gave homemade a fair try, tho!

you should try citrus acid to help with the junk left behind
@mikeglover15336 жыл бұрын
Ashley is right!! If you add 1/2 teaspoon of Citric Acid when the "RINSE" starts it will neutralize the white left on the dishes. The white cloudy substance left on the dishes is not from the hard water, but rather from the detergent you're using. It has a high ph and adheres to the dishes. The Citric Acid has a very low ph and neutralizes the white cloudy substance allowing it instantly be released from the dishes. If you want to know how fast Citric Acid works, look ath the dishes in the "RINSE" cycle before adding it and then let it run after adding the citric acid for about 5 seconds and check the results. They are instant!

you use that in your electric dish washer? How do you apply the white vinegar? You mean you stop the dish washer at the rinse cycle and apply it then? Our dishwasher takes all day to work through its entire cycle, just about! (very inefficient). And it leaves film too.

I made this minus the washing soda. The recipe I used didn't call for it (there are so many). But I noticed that it leaves a film on plastic items. I do use vinegar in the rinse container. Any ideas why the film? Should I add the washing soda? Thanks!

Waste of time and $. Two water softeners and salt, which does nothing. No. Salt doesn’t soften water. Borax and washing soda do. Baking soda is also a filler. Zero surfactants. Dissolve some in hot water. Add an oil. Shake. None will dissolve. What a joke!
