The output out the mower that feeds into the second deck fights the outflow of the second deck. This will cause it to plug rapidly in wet grass snd generally make for a clumpy cut.

When I bought my place with five acres it took me two days to mow with my 42" riding mower. So I bought two 22" push mowers and connected them 36" apart from each other. I removed the front wheels and added a large caster wheel in front of each one, and towed the whole thing behind the riding mower with an aluminum bar a-frame. That gave me over 6' of mowing for less than $2000 total investment. I have a tractor and brush cutter now that I use for the big areas and a big zero turn for the yards, but the tow behind contraption was more fun. I'll post a short video of it in operation to my channel.

Great idea and well made. The only way to improve it would be to use sell propelled mowers and put a seat on the back. You could leave the separate drives systems independent, so that you could use them to steer with!
@WJCTechyman8 ай бұрын
At that point you may as well pay a few hundred for an old lawn tractor. Also, the self propulsion on these kinds of mowers are only built enough to carry the mower, bag (if it has that function) and the collected debris. Most of them are so cheaply made you'll bust the transaxle in one or two sweeps carrying your weight since most of them are held together in a plastic box.
@johnsomerset15108 ай бұрын
@@WJCTechyman Don't worry 'techyman', I was joking about the seat.
@brushcrawler86128 ай бұрын
My only problem with it would be the strip down the middle that doesn't get cut. You basically lost the advantage of the width by having to overlap by 1/2 the unit. A hinge in the middle would have been cool to try too before you welded the axles together. For those of us with rolling landscapes.

Good old Briggs Flathead engines. Those things would run forever with basic maintenance. It is crazy to think that less than a decade ago, they were still making those bulletproof engines, and now the ones they make are worse than some of the no-name Chinese engines. The saying "they don't make them like they used to" is true, but in some cases like this, you really don't have to look back too far.
@WJCTechyman8 ай бұрын
I've never liked these engines. Give me a Honda GXV160 over these and you don't have the Achilles heel of a plastic carburetor that can warp using a rubbeer diaphram that hardens when using any grade of fuel and the stupid idea of a primer bulb that you have to bend over, pump three times, go back to the handle, pull three or four times because the diaphragm is done, prime again and then after a few times of doing this you toss it off a hill.. All of that is simplified with a gravity feed system and a manual choke/throttle up on the handle. Honda, you can start the engine faster and easier than you would with these things. This includes Kohler and Kawasaki.
@WalterKnox8 ай бұрын
@@WJCTechyman yep, and you are paying much more. I have only seen a couple warped Carbs, and not having a desperate float bowl makes it much more reliable if someone leaves old gas in it. These engines are cheap, simple and can last decades.

Very clean combination, If anyone else is considering this it might be faster to simply mount them unaltered side by side in a sort of staircase shape. with one mower 1 step forwards. This would allow for an overlap in cut path, you may also have to flip one mower around so that each mowers exhaust port faces out.

We used to do this for tow behind finish mowers, but we used 3 so there was a couple of inches of overlap where they all met in a type of triangular shape. We used the bolt holes from the rear corners of the front mower to the front interior corner of the 2 trailing mowers (one of the trailing mowers was turned backwards to keep the discharge port open). We left all of the remaining wheels in place and used some angle iron to fashion a tow bar with a pin hitch for the atv or lawn tractor. It was a simple, reliable, 60" cutting finish mower that we used for many years and cost less than $100 years go.
@michaeltipton55009 ай бұрын
Got to admit that is ingenious.

Not really. Other companies have been making large walk behind mowers for ages. Toro, Scag and Ferris make them but cost a lot of money. Not to mention that riding lawn mowers used aren't a lot of money. There's also the option of buying a walk behind field and brush mower.

The only problem I see is that the lawnmower on the left is ejecting the cut grass to the lawnmower on the right, and therefore has to eject the grass it cuts and the grass cut by the lawnmower on the left. I would have put the lawn mower on the left in the other direction, so that each mower ejects the grass from each side, one facing forward and the other facing backwards.

Agreed! All I could think was, I guess he plans to mow his grass twice as often now. Even a single, self-propelled mulching mower, starts to bog down and stall out if the grass needs more than 3" cut off the top. Anyone who has had to mow in that situation knows what a pain in the ass it is. You have to come to stand still and lift up the back end of the mower by the handle bar, just to free up the pile of grass trapped under it! Now he'll have to lift up TWO mowers to clear it all out. No thanks! He's going to need to mow more frequently to avoid that situation since ALL the clippings are exhausted through a single point....which defeats his initial goal. Aside from the final outcome, I do applaud his initiative to try to invent something though. Necessity is the mother of invention, maybe he'll figure out some modifications that will work great. He clearly has the welding skills and tools needed to fabricate his own parts.

One very important think, YOU NEVER TIE DOWN YOUR AUTO KILL LEVER - put a quick release clip on it and run a squeeze clamp on a light piece of rope to your clothes. That way, if you stumble and fall, the clip is pulled off the kill-bar and the engine quits-
