I was thinking to put the pre-charge resistor across the contactor too, but hadn't seen it before, so figured I was overlooking something. I realised after watching you that I've been thinking about this for the wrong part of the circuit - before the controller but also before other feeds...wrong! Muchas gracias!

It appears it's already pretty noisy like this, maybe if you can find a transmission with straight-cut gears you could ditch the siren. It gets pretty "whiny" though. As always, phenomenal work!

The current diff and the chain both add enough noise with the motor and tires that I really don't see the need for the siren either. It's plenty loud enough imo.

Garden hose. Sponge. Whatever. The modules are sealed. Both the battery and myself get soaked any time I hit a puddle (water flies off the front wheels with no fenders to stop it). Motor is liquid cooled so obviously it's waterproof. Everything else, excluding transmission cables, is protected undercover the same as sensitive electrical components in any other vehicle.

Thank you for showing your setup! I have a Kelly and Motenergy setup too but it seems to stall and makes loud noises art different stages through the RPM range. Fanny is trying to help resolve it without any luck yet. Have you seen that before with your Kelly setups previously? Thanks!

I did have issues with power cutting out under hard acceleration. Zero point, amplitude and angle identification all worked properly. I determined that the current the ME1616 was pulling on the AC (output) side of the controller was around 10 amps higher at full throttle than what the controller could handle, though DC input was fine. On the 'vehicle' page of the user program, I changed the current % (for the motor - not to be confused with the motor current setting on the motor page - that's only for angle identification), as well as the battery current to 95 instead of the default 100. The controller now limits the input and output current to 95% of its rating without tripping the overcurrent protection. I also set the forward MAP to 50. Fany suggested trying 80 because I wanted full power immediately, the moment that I put the pedal to the floor, but that seemed to cause overcurrent issues again with the surge of power. The MAP setting determines whether the throttle input is exponential, linear or logarithmic, ie how much current is delivered depending on the position of the throttle; 30 = exponential, 50 = linear, 80 = logarithmic. These are just a benchmark, you can choose any number between them. It took a couple of weeks to get it tuned in the way I want but it's now working pretty good. Has no problem kicking up dirt and scaring the heck out of me lol. I'm heading out in a few minutes for day 2 of shooting the final drive footage. If I were to use another Motenergy motor, I would probably invest in a Sevcon controller. They're quite a bit more expensive but they're what I consider a 'performance' controller, better suited for race machines. A guy I'm following built his own race car with 2 of the ME1616's and two Sevcon controllers, and they deliver full power the moment he stomps the throttle for a drag race. There's always a bit of a lag with the Kelly controllers it seems. But they work fine for the price. All controllers take a bit of work to get them tuned in.

Hey James! I have found sources that say the output shaft on the ME1616 is 7/8", and I have also found that the output shaft referred to as 1-1/8". Can you confirm which it is?

On a side note, I'm planning a very similar build to this but in a motorcycle, do you know what is the maximum torque available on your setup? I'm having a hard time figuring out the ideal reduction ratio to meet both acceleration and maximum speed desired performance, any help is greatly appreciated! I've never used Sabvoton beyond using a pre-programmed kit in a previous build, so I really can't say what they're like to program, but I find no difference in terms of driving. I know how to tune the KLS controllers to just about any motor, so I stick with these unless someone can give me good reason to learn a new program.

Update: took it out for a drive today, my recommendation is to NOT get a Kelly IPS controller like mine (sine/cosine type). The controller won't deliver peak power in low speed/high torque scenarios (

What top speed do you think it will have?

120 km/h, twice the speed it needs as a trail buggy. I can't see anyone ever driving that fast on a trail unless they're a really talented adrenaline junky. It's not a highway passenger vehicle, so top speed is irrelevant. Fast acceleration (ie torque) is more important in this context, and more fun.

In most of North America it would just be a matter of adding things like fenders, mirrors, wipers, lights, etc. Basic safety equipment. It doesn't have a solid axle like other crosskarts so it's safe to operate on asphalt without having to peel the tires and drift around corners to compensate for understeering (this is one of the reasons why a typical atv can't be licensed for use on public roads). I don't plan on licensing for the road, but I did install the LSD just in case.

It shouldn't - your gas tank is more likely to kill you, statistically speaking. But to each their own, I'm not here to tell you what to drive, just show you what I did. Check out the other videos in the build series, most of the videos don't focus specifically on the electric powertrain - you could put anything you want in this buggy :)
