where does the removed metal go? I was thinking of using this in my jewelry business.

Mostly vaporized, some is turned to fine dust/powder that settles on the base and work bench. Not sure what sort of effect the laser has on the properties of particulates that aren't completely vaporized or if it's in a condition to be reused (I assume you would want to recycle as much 'waste' as possible). Ventilation is a must either way.

Hi, what thickness is the foil you use? Is it aluminum or something else? Where can I find it? or what should I look for? Thank you
@JamesBiggar

It's just aluminum flashing. You can find it at any building supply store.

Yes, absolutely. It can engrave or mark any metal and most plastics. It's a great tool for a jeweler.

wow. what a great machine. love it. You mentioned that it can run G-code. I'm very new to this, but how can you load the G-code on the device and is it possible to use FluidNC?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 4 күн бұрын
I assume it could be compatible with FluidNC given that it uses an ESP32 grbl controller, but there's no mention of it in the specs. I would just stick with the firmware that's installed. As mentioned in the video, you need a g-code sender to send a g-code to the machine if you don't work exclusively offline through the terminal and sd card. A g-code sender is software designed to control a cnc machine. There's loads of free software to do this, like Candle and UGS (both provided with the machine - I demonstrated Candle in the video). But before you can import a g-code to the machine, you need to create it first. That's why I like Easel. It's an all in one software that allows you to design/draw your project in 2D and from that it creates a 3D model for reference as well as a g-code that you can either use through Easel to control the machine as shown in the video, or export it via sd card to use through the offline terminal, or export it to a g-code sender like Candle instead. But this machine has become a little sloppy since this upload due to the v-wheels and their placement. Twin v-wheels with a wide span or linear rails are better. Check out my channel for other options.
@matthewjames7513

Wow thanks so much for your comprehensive reply! I plan to make my g-code manually using a python script (long story). Would a g-code sender still be able to send the .NC file across? Do you know how that would work? Or would I be forced to just load it manually offline using the SD card?

These machines are a lot of fun but be prepared for large electric bills for running 500 watts for so many hours. Thats what happened to me with my home made CNC router.
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 5 күн бұрын
500 watts * 15 hrs = 7500 watthours. Local utility rate is ~13¢/kWh, avg in US/Canada is 16¢/kWh. 7.5 kWh * 0.16 = $1.20. ~$55/m to run 24/7, 7 days a week. That's assuming that a person doesn't have an off grid system like mine (I design/build wind and solar energy equipment). I sold that fish for $40. Speaking as a 25 year journeyman, if a person can't recoup the cost to buy and operate tools of any kind in either personal benefit or commercial value, then they're doing something wrong.

What nozzle temp do you print at? What material? You should be between 205-215c nozzle if you are using PLA. Lower temps cause underextrusion problems, that you mentioned.

Your "preview" intro is really smart. This prevents the viewer from fast forwarding around. Once the fast forwarding starts, it ends with them moving on to the next video.

The buggy is awesome, but surrounding yourself with lithium batteries seems like a death trap. I'd much rather the batteries be at the back of the buggy instead of around my legs and body. In case of a disaster that might at least give me time to get out of the vehicle.
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 6 күн бұрын
Thanks! But then you'd have a weight distribution problem. That's why most ev batteries are positioned equally either below and/or around the cog. But these aren't like NCM, even though NCM are statistically far less dangerous than a half tank of petrol in a crash, contrary to conservative media talking heads who only recognize fire when it's coming from a Tesla. Even with NCM, ev's are 60X less likely to explode into flames than their ice counterparts simply because there are so many safeguards throughout the powertrain from the cells to the esc's to specifically prevent or at least minimize that risk. ICE vehicles have fuel lines and electrical circuits running together side by side in a lot of cases, because clowns. I've been a victim of what that can lead to. My father's old GM exploded into flames and we were lucky to make it out unscathed. The odds of that happening with this machine are slim to none. Look at this chassis, for example. It's trussed. It would take one hell of a wreck to damage it and risk crushing a module - one that would probably render me unconscious anyway. But even if that happened, these are LFP cells. LFP are literally the safest lithium chemistry, especially these 32650's. You could drive an iron rod through one of those packs and the worst that would happen is some sparks, expansion and a bit of smoke, assuming you isolated yourself from the rod and weren't electrocuted. Some brands are a bit more volatile, but nothing compared to NCM. And again, NCM powered ev's are 60x safer in terms of post-crash fires than ice are. LFP just aren't as energy dense as the more popular NCM type that you see in compact devices. We've electrified everything now, from cars to buggies to planes to watercraft. If you understand what you're dealing with and wire, insulate and seal/protect everything properly, then you should be no more concerned about driving something like this than any other vehicle.

All your reviews are well done! Questions: (as a retired engineering interested in printing engineering type materials with enough precision for jigs/fixtures/molds/casting) 1. How close do you think this model comes to the Bamboo Labs Carbon X1? 2. At $500, one could buy 4 of these, instead of 1 BLCX1. Would that strategy work in your shop? 3. If not, what are the metrics that are important for engineering approaches to 3d printing? (from YOUR point of view)
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 4 күн бұрын
The X1 looks similar but it's a different beast, well worth the money for the advanced features. See their specs. This is more akin to the P1P, roughly the same price. What's important when setting up your own shop is YOUR point of view. What are you using them for? Hobby? Profession? Prototyping and product design? What sort of production capacity do you need>? Etc. The answers will depend entirely on your goals. I use my shop for prototyping, so I don't necessarily need a full blown print farm. 2 or 3 decent sized printers suit my needs fine.

your stalling is actually the motor not the controller lol theres a peak stall torque value of 134 Nm. I would try lowering it to 92V and see if the stalling out still persists, could be a simple tune on the controller to lower the torque abit at the current voltage.
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 11 күн бұрын
The motor could be stalling, yes. Stalling increases the current demand dramatically. This can create an overcurrent issue in the esc and cause it to shut down. Voltage is proportional to speed, current is proportional to torque. The only options to remedy are to tune the torque/current settings lower in the esc and live with lower torque, or increase the voltage and gear ratio to increase motor rpm while increasing torque mechanically at the expense of wheel speed, which would lower torque load and current demand on the motor and esc. As I mentioned in the video. Lowering the voltage from 102-92V would lower the motor rpm and increase the current demand and torque load for the same power output - this would only make it stall sooner...would it not?
@ThatGuy-sh5ib
@ThatGuy-sh5ib 11 күн бұрын
@@JamesBiggar you are correct, Can't wait to see what this thing can do once you get the gearing and tune dialed in. I was confusing myself with the current/voltage effecting the torque, been a long day.

I have the otter for 3 days now but i cant get any scans to optimize the point cloud... I've no way of knowing whether its the scanner's fault or the scanner software being incompatible with my PC.. or what.. the point cloud looks amazing i just cant do anything with it
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 13 күн бұрын
If your PC specs don't match the requirements then it's your PC. If you don't have version 3.1.6 or higher, then it's the software (I'm using 3.1.22). Or it could be both. Your way of knowing is checking the device requirements in the user manual and checking what version of the software you're using.
