This guy is a tremendous ambassador for electric cars. He is technically competent, entertaining, and IMO extremely persuasive. If there were an electric car company that needed a marketing director/consultant, he would be an awesome pick. Even as a paid spokesperson.

, I first found out about John's blue meanie on the EVDL discussion list about 20 years ago. John is a very talented writer. I had converted my Volkswagen into an electric pick up with golf cart batteries and back then many things had to be cobbled together from existing technologies not related to cars. John was a master of finding things that worked and was at the Forefront of making Fast electric cars back then. I believe anybody that has been in the electric car world for 20 years probably knows him. I had the pleasure to meet him a few times. He has helped many people in the past convert their gas cars to Electric with information that was freely shared on the internet. Thank you John for all you've done.

Jason schmidt ,yea teslas seem really nice, however average blue collar ppl like myself with z family and around 60k a year income still cannot afford one. Unless of course i refinance my families home for a vehicle thats definitely going to depreciate IMMEDIATELY,and guaranteed to break down eventually !!! If it wasn't for the RIDICULOUS prices i would have two of them right now. I suppose until the make them affordable i'll be driving my f150 and GMC trucks, which aren't bad products but i do realize & admit i wld much rather hsve a nice reliable electric pick up .

The Chevy Bolt is $36,000 and goes 240 miles (not to be confused with the Volt which is an extended range electric and only goes 50 miles EV). It'll only be a few years before they depreciate and are available used.

Thank you for your response Gordon. Actually, since I have been doing this now for more than 10 years, I have tried every approach and it seems as though the fairest one to me and to my customers is to make the price such that you buy one of my films if you really want to have it. I spend most of my time either looking for money to make the next film or on KZbin setting up and communicating with folks like yourself. David, if you can pull that car into a station, change the batteries quickly with a hydraulic system, and pull back out into the highway within one minute, then no gas car could beat you. High efficiency, deep cycle lithium rechargeable batteries would be developed which would use copper rail contacts. These batteries would weigh a lot, but that weight would push the battery down against the copper rail contacts, making the system stable, and the contact constant.

I remember my old high school auto mechanics textbook with a diagram from the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) that depicted the various energy losses from a gasoline-powered car. I remember that 30% went right out the tailpipe! Of course there were other losses. But the one thing that I do remember was that only 15% of the energy in gasoline gets to the wheels!! Pretty pathetic.

LOL, nice catch. Iove a good engine rumble, what gearhead doesn't? But I have to admit that a lightweight car with an electric motor has some appeal. I almost never drive more than 30 miles a day, so a EV would work well for me. Maybe just put some playing cards on the wheels for some engine noise, lol

RCPro Driver Thanks hahaha. Cards would sound pretty nice I s'pose ;) I was read your other comment about the pollution, and wanted to add in that those who live where there is ample sun could probably charge their cars with the purchase a some solar panels. I'm not electrician, so I don't know how many they would need, but it would be something to consider. As a fellow gear head, I do loves me some displacement. But I am no dummy, electric is the way to go. I'd love to build my own EV out of an original Mini Cooper. It's too bad Aptera closed down though ;(

matt1618john146 Matt, I agree that some kind of noise is needed to prevent people from walking out in front of electric cars. I've been pretty close to getting hit by electric cars here in Japan several times, not only because they are so quiet, but also because roads are smaller in Japan and thereby cars are driven much closer to pedestrians. Now, my head is constantly on a swivel when getting hit is a distinct possibility.

I would definitely look into buying one for fun but isn't there a way you can put some sort of alternator or generator to charge it while driving
@Zamboro
@Zamboro 7 жыл бұрын
Battery supplies energy to move the car. Car movement drives the alternator. That puts some energy back into the battery, but not more than is taken from the forward motion of the car. Even under perfect conditions you only recover the same amount you took away from the car with the alternator, so it doesn't extend the range any.

I've always had the same thought. Diesel/electric locomotives work in this way. They have a bloody great big diesel engine that produces electricity for the equally huge electric motors. I've always thought that having a small diesel powered generator would be the obvious easy way to extend the range of the car

He should try putting the batteries in the center of the car for evenly distributed weight, adding solar panels to the roof, and putting a small wing turbine in the head grill just for those little emergency times. Also, it would give it a much longer run time and make it go faster. I'm 12 years old :D

The reason is a long held method of trying to combat monopolies and a pretty thing argument to "keep money in the community". The laws forbid manufacturers from selling directly to consumers, but must sell through third party dealerships. Ultimately these things will fail because no one likes the dealership and their underhanded tactics and public pressure will change.

Infrastructure has to catch up. Actually there are plans for charging stations. For example, one idea that is kicked around is to have battery packs that are already precharged and when you pull up into a charge station, you put in your old battery pack and plug in the new fresh battery pack. I can even see it being like a vending machine type of deal!

Cool little segment, but I have a few critiques. Mathew Wald says that you can't plug in anywhere, that's malarkey. Even then, when this doc. was produced, no special plugs were needed, you can plug in anywhere there is an outlet. Also, there is not necessarily a smoke stack involved with EV charging. With the increasing prevalence in clean, green, and renewable electricity sources, the stack has been taken out. However, we still do rely on significant amounts of coal to produce our electricity. Hopefully we can continue to change that and save ourselves in the process. EV's rock!

Most efficient way to do this would be to put an onbord Generator. Set it up to where you can plug it in like he has it but if you also have an onboard generator to help keep the batterys charged up after they start running low, I wish I had the money to do this to a truck. I think it would take some work but to build an offroad Electric truck, would take alot of work but I think it is possible to do and would be pretty cool.

Even 30mi range could be very useful.I could drive my 18 miles to work,plug it in all day at my shop,then drive it home and plug it in with energy to spare.Sure I can't drive 120mi to visit my parents,but imagine of my ICE powered vehicle only came out during those circumstances?Keep in mind that sustained highway speed driving is the most green and equipment friendly way to drive an ICE vehicle. Also, even coal powerplants produce less pollution per KW or HP than an ICE. Good Job!

That's not real technology. If you research it. Tesla never made any "magnet motor generator". Dynamo means something different than you think, and unlimited energy violates the law of conservation. The so called "free energy magnetic motor" is however a well known investor scam.

What a massive difference 9 years makes. All the fossil fuel vehicle manufacturers WILL go out of business if the do not switch to making electric vehicles - like really soon. The ones with their heads in the sand will definitely go the way of the dodo birds. John Weiland (Weyland) had amazing foresight about electric cars - "250 to 300 miles of range". I hope that he is still alive to see what Tesla has done so far and what they are planning to do.

yeah, for my mother, her line of work can involve her driving 100+ miles in a moments notice (homecare nurse/instructor) and although she doesn't do it much now, she's still on reserve and might have to travel up to 200 miles on some destinations, so for her, EV isn't there yet, no "oh wait gotta charge for 3 hours" when someone's dying on ya, however for me, i never really have anywhere far to go, daily maybe i'd drive 10 miles max, school, work, home. maybe another 60 miles if i choose to go to the mall, maybe 100 miles if i visit my grandparents, because of that i'm considering an EV (looking at finding a used S-10 conversion) and i mean only reason i have to go long distance would be a vacation, and in that case i just use my SUV, hell could even trailer the EV for use after i get there

wjb722 that's not true my friend I drive 100 miles a day to get back and forth to work as do many many people where I live... an elecrric car would be great but It has to go at least 200 miles to a charge to be a consideration for a gas car replacement

As long as you're not hauling additional weight of a charging system with you. A "range extender" mounted on a small motorcycle trailer would be fine, as you could disconnect from it when you don't need it. Your post brings up something else we need...lightweight turbo-diesels.
