Ferrite powder as a ferrite core? I would like to see this pursued further. I wonder what would happen if you mixed the ferrite powder (or magnetite) with glue and exposed it to a heavily magnetic field and then let it harden into a rod ? Would it make a good inductor core ?

I'm using the cores from chokes taken from old circuit boards. Crushed into powder. It's loose filled into an old marker pen case. If you read up about ferrite rods used for radio you'll discover there are two types of ferrite compound used, one has a better permeability than the other and is favoured for radio, as it's better when dealing with higher frequencies. The purpose of the ferrite rod is to concentrate the signal for detection in the coil of wire. The coil is wound on to a former that slides over the rod. For optimal signal reception it's required to moved the coil/former more towards one end of the rod. Ferrite itself is not magnetic, as in it doesnt generate itd own magnetic field but is affected by magnetic fields. In it's powdered form you can get it to line up with the field from a bar magnet (powder on paper over the magnet kinda thing). Once the field is removed the ferrite does not retain the magnetism. In a solid ferrite rod when a magnetic field is applied the magnetic domains within the rod will line up with the field whilst it's applied. So to answer your question, using a solid rod is better than the loose powder version I used in my video and applying a strong magnetic field as you suggested would only.have a momentary effect. For radio reception you wouldn't want a fixed state of magnetism in the core of the aerial as it would more than likely ruin the ability to detect an in coming radio wave. The stick aerial works by resonant frequency. Tuning the aerial to the same frequency as the broadcasting stations carrier wave.
