Homemade forklift (Part 1)
I have stopped looking at most replies for a long time. I used to be upset by all the haters! I can't figure them out and have come to realize that all they can do is discourage my son.
I have taught my son to use my tools safely. He asked if he could try to build something while I was gone for the weekend and my wife was home. He did this 100% on his own and way before he even had a cellphone or access to the internet. He was in 6th grade. I wouldn't have cared if it didn't even get off the ground! He was using his imagination, creativity, and engineering skills before he even knew what engineering was!
He was not happy with the results and asked me if I had any ideas how he could make it better. I gave him a couple thoughts I had (yes, I know I am not an engineer)and he ran with it and improved it for his second attempt. See part 2.
Unfortunately he then tried to use it to lift some heavy logs in the woods and broke it.
Then he wanted me to buy a welder so he could make it even stronger. I wish I could afford one because there are so many things that he could try and I would like to learn to use it with him!
Thanks for all the positive comments over the years from everyone!

Good thinking, now you need a stick welder and some old bed frames, and let the games begin.

If you make it out of square steel tubing or solid steel beams, with a stronger winch. Mount it a bit better, to the utilities racks. It could be used like a full size forklift. Pretty neat.

Explicitly awesome. .. the best part was your dad saying you wouldn't let him see it til the end..... haha my dad is same way. ... your know what would be better. Him saying he's hella proud .... good work. You crapped out a fork lift for a quad out a wood.... for those of you that don't get my context. It means when you make poop, this kid will be making shit. Grate shit. ....great stuff.... is a patent the right way to go. It's a truck load of money and you could be easy copied with the right math and a good engineer could do those numbers after he makes yours.. you don't need any version of. A Prototype to file a patent just the detailed drawing..... hit up 80/20 the industrial erector set for a good time..... hey hear is some typos types typhoes for all you creative police smashing on the eeeboards....btw. yes I make stuff..polic3. first find me and then whip out your dixk . I mean show me what you got.. really what planer are you people fromm who rips on a kid who got it right the first attempt..... yes wood perfect over metal for several reasons . Availability. Price. Engineering preformance. It's it's it's engineering. .. yes ..... I typos just to feel that lov3. Nor would I have the time to conjecture real words and sentences and stuff when I'm in my own world ignoring humanity. i mean making stuff. Dan in an ass. F speel check.... keep. Making stuff kid. Sorry about all the cursing and dad buy you kid a 6 dollar burger since you can't buy a forklift. ... and it's the act of another indivaul looking at the project . Yes just looking will change the outcome or dissolve it completely. ... it's schortamerr. Shor dimes. . Danm special check. Google,,' exploding cat theory " ... does anything think hilter would have been so bad if he got into art school. Retort call. Retoric question. I'll never see your replies. And this rant was mainly for my dad who believes in pyramid networking schemes who thinks they will pay out one day over his son who has placed sec end in a national art show. Also won two other awards at the college levell. So two shows three awards one piece....I over sampled the drawing to add in more resolution. Impossible a professor exclaimed. 5000 by 10000 pixels. (I got 5x that big) 250.000.000 printable pixals. Querter billion. At 72 dpi it's huge . At 36 dpi its a football field in size.....damn forgetting your awesome sucks... Thankx trolls. I dont need yours or dads aproval. I think we made a breakthrough today. I think I'll make my dad's dreams come true I'm gunna take all your scamming ass money and put it where i want it ........where's my five dollars ken.... end communication

Good job.. If you look at the side view, there is a triangular gap between the lift and the front bumper.. If you make a wooden 'wedge' where the triangle becomes more than 90 degrees, when you activate the winch, your forklift will 'lean' towards the vehicle, just like a real forklift would.. Next, start looking underneath wooden kitchen/dining tables. Older, well constructed ones that you can add extra leafs in had a wooden sliding mechanism. By building something similar to the shape of your current lift, and by stretching the winch cable up and over the table's slide mechanism, you can stack pallets on top of each other..

Great attempt but if wanted here are some things you could do to make it better. 1. Make it out of steel. Two Make a sliding mechanism to slide to forks up and down. I made mine for about 300 bucks for my ATV with some steel from the scrap yard, 2 60 dollar 2500 pound winches from harbor freight(Might not be the best but I have had them for over a year and they still work great), and some casters from harbor freight to take the weight off of the front of the atv. I also used metal sphere I bought off ebay for the sliding mech. Mine is not the best and as far as weight goes can not hold much(Maybe 1000 pounds at most and even then it does not work as good as something only a few hundred pounds) but it gets the job I need it to do done.

Tell 20 teenagers of today to go and build a homemade forklift all by yourself... And I guarantee only one or two will be able to do it! Who are those two? The ones with an engineering type mind! Give that boy a full engineering scholarship at the engineering school of his choice. Forklift today... Space shuttle tomorrow!

teach him to weld give him $50-$100 send him to a scrap yard and he'll have some think that will work better wood is great for building prototypes now he just need to build it make an upside down T and hook that to the front A arms of the four wheeler and make the forks slide up a metal center beam with a pulley at the top to the winch not sure how old he is but if you teach him to weld grind and use a torch he will be set for life

If you guys have nothing better to do than to mock a kid on here who is willing to go out and build something to make is job easier than to sit around mocking other people on KZbin like yourselves then maybe you should glue a mirror to your computer screen and phone screen so when you look at it to mock some one you will be mocking your self. And to the kid great job the shows that you are creative enough and have learned the concept "work smarter not harder" and that is a very good concept to learn for the farm or any job for that matter why work hard when you can build something to do the work for you
