(Homemade) Go Kart Build Project 13: Front Shocks Mounted!!

In this video I discuss the work I have done on the front suspension! Finally, the kart is actually starting to look like a kart with the front suspension mounted! I still have to do the finishing welds on the one side, as well as also adding that extra vertical support to further strengthen the suspension arm under suspension load. I would've liked to actually film the work I did on this part of the kart, but I was crunched for time and wanted to get this progress done. Future videos will definitely have more fabrication because now I am on Summer vacation. I will be on vacation for 2 weeks so until then, there won't be any new go kart videos filmed, so stay tuned because there will be lots of exciting stuff happening then! Great update it really is starting to look like a go kart can't wait to see it finished, and my rest of the parts for the snowmobile motor is coming sometime this week so hopefully I can get it Running by this weekend and I'll upload a video of it when its finished

Wouldnt you want the suspension a little over extended when its on the boxes like that? I would think if it was level with no weight on it that it would sink below level once you sit in it. Same idea as a car. Once you lift it up the suspension extends way out so when you set it down the ride height is correct. Looks badass though!

+mrkthmn Yea now that I look back and after seeing the kart on the ground there is a small bit of sag due to that, but it's not a whole lot so I'm not too worried about it, but thanks!

yea... once you sit on it the shocks will compress and it will go even lower

Based on all the splatter your wire speed is surely to high if you turn it down some you'll notice that the welds will penetrate better too

I know im super late on this build, but im thinking you should have made the suspension adjustable. once you start adding more weight it going to settle a lot lower.

+2cwik4u104 Yea I paid for that in the rear, not really so much in the front. The back end sagged with the weight of me and the engine, but I got some bigger shocks to pre load the suspension and it helped a ton

When you need to weld a angle a way I do for woodworking to hold the piece is I use a piece of wood cut a triangle out and a clamp goes on to flat parts hard to explain but up how to clamp miter or angles will help

Won't there be too much friction if spindle is fixed without bearings attached?

There are bearings within the hub that the wheel mounts to.

josh moore I would love to help you out , but I won't be putting the plans up for this go kart for legality and safety reasons. If you're having trouble thinking of a design I highly recommend to browse around a Google search of go kart plans because there are many out there. That is where I got the beginning thoughts to do my design. If you have any questions about constructing a design for your own frame I would be happy to give you some tips!

Also when you get back to building it your should put a bumper cage around the whole thing so when ever you go to close To the side of somethin you don't stuff up the tires and also your should make somethin so if it roles you don't hit your head or anything

+Andrey Vargas Haha I built this completely myself, the only thing I bought for the front suspension are the shocks (on ebay, they're just bike shocks) and the front spindle assembly

Biggest tip I can give to you is look at some sort of open wheel race car/ go kart and try and replicate that suspension as best as possible. Most cars /buggys use a double wishbone suspension design, however, this is just a single wishbone design.

What size tires do you run?

7.5 inches wide in the rear and 5 inches wide in the front. All of the tires are 10 inches in diameter made for 5 inch rims

+Danny Menary Haha no worries, the tie rods won't bend when the suspension moves because of the tie rod ends, which are like a ball and socket joint that screw on to the tie rod and then those connect to the spindle and pitman arm by two bolts. Jamie Pursall Lol that's a very generalized statement. I know that shifter karts and most street karts don't have a suspension simply because they don't need one. Off-road go karts more often than not, definitely need a suspension. Like I said in my earlier videos, I wanted to do something that I haven't seen before, which is build a street kart with a suspension.

That's fair enough mate, but with the grip from those tyres, which is alot! It will simply not work unless your shocks are rock hard.
