Kefir is an incredible probiotic fermented beverage that was an essential component of my gut microbiome optimizing protocol that allowed me to achieve total resolution of a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis nearly four years ago. This is how I make it.

I received my first infusion of Remicade at the end of March. This medicine "put out the fire" in my gut. Remicade was miraculous for me. At the end of March, I also bought this kefir cage after watching this video, and I started making homemade kefir. I've made great progress healing my gut! -Thanks for making this very very helpful video Kenny!

The little "cage" inside to hold the kefir kernels is so clever! It's such a big job to strain out the kefir "kernels" and to keep everything perfectly clean. I'm going to try a tea buddy thingy and put the kefir solids in there inside the jar. Thanks for showing us.

I know I thought it was absolutely genius too. If the tea buddy is metal, that might cause a detrimental reaction with the fermentation: www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/milk-kefir/choosing-equipment-making-dairy-milk-kefir/#:~:text=Metal.,do%20have%20success%20doing%20so. Hope that helps!

Hi, when you first started drinking kefir did you experience any uc symptoms? Like diarrhea or mucus? I'm scared of making things worse. Also, how long do you ferment your kefir?
@cheayunju
@cheayunju Жыл бұрын
No, I didn't have any strong uc symptoms. It seemed to help. I started making it from the microbiota kit that I researched to be the easiest. I also made a lot of other dietary changes. My gut was back to normal, but after a buffet meal with my wife where I had a lot of fancy desserts and ice cream, I had extreme bowel bleeding the next day after work. That was when I realized processed/ added sugar was causing the flair ups. I quit sugar that day improved quickly. Since then I have avoided added suger, but natural sugar in fruit doesn't seem to make a problem. Sorry tangent. Depending on temperature, here in Korea I ferment my milk kefir (just made from standard basic brand full fat Seoul Milk) 24 hrs in spring and summer and 48 hrs in winter and fall, and adjust based on the way it looks in the jar. If you can find a sugarless product in store it might be easier. When I started making kefir, the only thing sold in Korea had a lot of sugar added to it (even the Cheetos are sweet here^o^). I've since found a Russian/Uzbek enclave neighborhood with several shops where I can buy some branded and fresh local kefirs. But if you're worried about reaction, I suggest just find a pure, completely sugar-free kefir and start with just half a cup per day and see how it goes^^ I'm used to it now, so I just chug it^^lol

I love your videos Kenny! Thank you very much for sharing so much valuable content! Can I ask please with how much kefir per day and in one sitting do you started to avoid die off reaction? And how much do you drink now? If you don’t mind please share the link from the fermenter. Thank you very much and all the best wishes

Really appreciate the kind words, thank you! Here is the link to the kefir fermenter: amzn.to/3mSK0Q2. I personally think the best way to go through a milder die off reaction is to start low and go slow. If I were doing it over again, I would start with 100 mL per day for 1 week. If I saw an increase in symptoms as a result of the die off reaction, I would either hold the dose of kefir steady for 1-3 days and see if the symptoms decreased/normalized. If they didn't decrease/normalize, then I would drop the dose of kefir or stop the kefir altogether until they did. On the flip side, If the symptoms normalize after a few days, I would increase the dose by 100 mL every week until I was up to about 800 mL like the IBD patients in the study were given. Always err on the side of caution! If you see an increase in symptoms and need medical attention, go get it. I always recommend consulting and listening to your doctor before you make dietary changes. Hope that helps.

Yeah, how much I use varies because they grow quickly. I ideally like to use a tablespoon and a half per two cups of milk maybe slightly less. In 12 hours it's very tart and the cream is separating. I recently ate a tablespoon of grains because in 12 hours it was so fermented the clear liquid was bubbling over. And I don't want to drink more kefir than a cup and a half twice a day.

its strain specific, so i think some strains actually cause you to go to the bathroom more. or if you combine certain strains, it could be really good or it could cause more problems. so maybe look into that. also, what do you think about a FMT by swallowing some poop pills?

Hey Kenny, I just started your Bootcamp a week ago. You've been an absolute Godsend in my life as I have suffered from Ulcerative Colitis about a year now. I was on Mesalamine for a year and could eat pretty much anything I wanted, but last month I noticed that the medicine wasn't working like it used to. I came to the conclusion that I will always have to increase the dosage of my medicine or worse if I continue down this path. I didn't have any hope that I could heal this condition until I stumbled upon one of your videos. Thank you so much for giving people like us hope and being a blessing in our lives. Also, I know that you suggest using raw milk. However, I'm still not comfortable with it quite yet. I'd like to start with just Kefir and normal milk first. Does it matter what milk I use? Could I make Kefir with Almond milk for example?
@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the kind words! You could start with regular milk, doesn't need to be raw. The fermentation process will still break down a significant portion of the lactose and increase the probiotic microorganisms. There are ways to make it with coconut milk and I'd assume almond milk as well. Cultures for health has some info about plant based kefir on their website that might be worth checking out. I'll also be filming a video about a pretty cool probiotic coconut yogurt that has some similar benefits as kefir. Hope that helps!

Just did some reading about them. They look awesome! If you get one I'd make sure it has an activated charcoal component (I saw that one of them does have it) in order to remove the chlorine. Just at a glance it looks like they remove the majority if not all of the chemicals that would be harmful. So far they look like they check out. Hope that helps!

So as long as whatever Berkey filter you get has these filters installed (www.berkeyfilters.com/products/black-berkey-filter?gclid=CjwKCAjw8MD7BRArEiwAGZsrBWWro1sLryZQYMsxRDZwsuaI9P-6V7zf7_e6y5_NakBdHxFc4an0jRoCkWoQAvD_BwE) then it should remove most of the chlorine as far as I know. It says this when you click on the link and scroll down to the bottom. "Black Berkey Filter elements are made of a carbon composite containing high-grade coconut shell carbon combined with a proprietary blend of 5 other types of media." Anywhere that I've found info on berkey filters has said it does a good job of removing chlorine. Here's some more good info that links to info about it removing chlorine: www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/blog/category/chlorine/
