Those hardened stainless steel calipers can be drilled with a carbide drill. If you don’t have a spade or twist drill a carbide tipped masonry bit with the tip sharpened will do the job (and they are cheap!) or you can notch the piece as you did. Inexpensive digital readout that functions every bit as good as a high dollar unit! Awesome!!

Awesome! I'm a Turner/Fitter by Trade, but I'm now a self employed Handyman. I have a Pillar Drill that I've just added a cheap 2 axis Table to, this would be a far more accurate way of using that 😁

very good congratulations, to drill such hard steel you need a very small speed and a little patience

I had to watch all of your lathe-videos in one go. Now I want to make my own. :) Very good stuff. I have one question, why is the cross-sled so long, considering that one would only ever want to use tooling on the front side of the chuck. Is it to use the lathe as a mill instead?

Thanks, Jes, so i have a clamp plate with a size of 20x30cm with 20cm cross-sled travel which is great if i want to upgrade my lathe to a milling machine... Also its good if you want to clamp other stuff on the plate. Like now I have to mill a T-nut for a shaft... So i can clamp an endmill in the 3 Jaw chuck and the shaft on the plate... I hope you can understand my English ;D Greedings from Deutschland

@@dexter1448 English is good enough to understand. :) I think I want to make a simple but sturdy metal lathe following your design and make it into a CNC-lathe instead.

@@dexter1448 excellent, thank you for that! Oh, one more question, the linear guides.. are they aluminium with steel rod on top, or are they solid steel?

I would have made it where the zero was at the axis of rotation, then you'd know how large the part is.
