Hola amigos!
**This video is in English.**
**In the previous two videos, I showed you two different methods for making bowls without using a jaws chuck. We only used glue blocks and a faceplate. These faceplates are normally easy to get and most lathes already come with one, but, what happens if you do not have one? OK, the idea of this video is to show you how to make a faceplate homemade with material that are unexpensive.**
**I hope you enjoyed this video and if that was the case, please make comments, give it a "like" and subscribe to my channel.**
**If for any reason you did not like it, or there is anything that I could do better, please let me know. There is always room for improvement!**

Firstly, your English is far better than my Spanish! What an excellently produced video. I usually find background music rather distracting and irritating but you have modulated the volume so that it does not interfere with the dialogue. I will watch this a few times to make sure I have understood everything. Thank you for producing this. Other youtube producers can learn so much from this.

Hi Berny! Thank you so much, my dear friend, for your kind comments. I really appreciate your comments about the video editing. It actually takes more time editing the video, finding adequate music, royalties free, inserting the voice overs and playing with the volume so that I am heard over the music, etc. But because the channel is about woodturning, all that many times goes unnoticed. So, it is really satisfying when somebody, like you, does! Thank you! Cheers! Daniel

Nice, about 20 years ago i made a big wood face plate for a lathe that was 40 inches. I had to be 100+ pounds. it was for mounting on the outward side of the headstock for turning foundry patterns. Id like to make a big wood lathe for bowls,tables and large clock faces. You did a good job on the video, it inspires me greatly. Thank you.

Great video, Daniel! I am really enjoying your series on ways to mount pieces in the lathe. I have a love/hate relationship to my chuck, and I'm definitely going to explore some of the options that you've shared in your videos. Also, I really like how you protected the internal nuts on the threads while you glued the nut in the block. Thanks for posting!

+Barry's Woodturning Hi Barry! Thank you very much, dear friend, for your comments! I solve my love/hate relationship with the chuck the moment I got the easy chuck from easy wood tools. It is amazing how fast you can switch jaws. That said, sometimes other methods work better depending on the wood and the piece. That's the beauty of the lathe, you have several ways to do the same thing. Cheers! Daniel

Daniel good video but if I can make a suggestion. I have the same lathe and I ran into a problem with the chucks not having a solid stop to bottom up against and depending on how much force I used it could wind up in a slightly different orientation than the last time or when I was turning the force against the wood would cause the chuck to move slightly tighter. Because of this things that were round weren't any more. I finally realized what was going on and got a couple washers that my chucks could bottom against and would not change position depending on the amount of pressure against them. I noticed when you screwed the faceplate on there was a gap between the faceplate and the bottom of the threaded section of the headstock. It may not matter much with a faceplate as you normally don't remove it and put it back on but it sure made a difference with my chuck use. Keep up with the videos as I watch most and often pick up a hint or two.
@DanielVilarino
@DanielVilarino 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick! Thank you very much for your comments and your suggestion. You are absolutely correct. It is important for a chuck to make contact with the shoulder of the threaded portion. And it is true that in the case of the faceplate that is not the case. As you well say, because faceplates are normally used for one purpose and you seldom have to put them back with the piece, that should not be a problem. But I like the idea of the washers because that is a fool proof way to avoid issues. My chucks, fortunately, all reach the shoulder of the threads and I never had a problem with them. Thanks again for the comment! Cheers! Daniel

+Yuval Lahav Woodturning Hi Yuval! Thank you, dear friend, for your comments and for watching the video! Yes, finding the nut can be tricky, but if you do not find them in hardware stores, try with a mechanic and where do they get their nuts and bolts. There are, normally, some businesses that are specialized in that sort of things. For example, in Uruguay, in Montevideo, I remember having the "Casa del Tornillo" (The house of the screw), la "Casa del Resorte" (the house of the spring), and so on, and so on. I found that going to a mechanic's workshop they would normally have that sort of information. Industrial hardware stores may be another source. I found mines in MSC Direct here in the States. Others that may have it are Grainger and Fastenal. But I am not sure if those same houses have subsidiaries in Italy. If you find them, but a lot (I got 10 myself) because they can be useful in all sort of jigs and chucks and gluing blocks. The other option is to get a tap with the size of your lathe's headstock thread and tap the nuts in hardwood. That should work pretty well. I got the tap myself and I am considering doing something like that at some point. Cheers! Daniel

These work great for turning bowls from chunks of wood, We only make the center hole 1/4 inch for a lagbolt to hold the workpiece on. Remember the bottom of the bowl is cut first then the piece is reversed for the hollow.....WCH great work

Thank you for the idea. I saved some time by drilling a slightly bigger hole and filled the open arcs with epoxy so no chisel work was needed. Also some masking tape across the bottom kept the epoxy out of the threads. Just a lazier utillization of your excellent demonstration.
@DanielVilarino
@DanielVilarino 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! Two excellent ideas my dear friend! The only issue I have with the bigger hole and filling the space with epoxy, and I am not sure about this, is whether the epoxy would offer better resistance than the wood itself. But that it will save you some time there is no doubt. I loved the idea of the masking tape. Cheers! Daniel

I made the hole just large enough that the corners of the nut bit into the wood slightly as it was pressed in. It fit snugly enough so that it could not turn. Sorry that I did not make that clear.

Hi Nino! Thank you for the comment. No, my lathe has a thread of 1 and 1/4 inches with 8TPI. It is similar to the nut you mention but not the same and it will not work with that one. If your lathe has a thread of metric 33 x 3.5 you have to make sure to find a nut that fits that thread. You may want to ask fastener distributors where you live regarding this measure. Cheers! Daniel

+Gord Rock Hi Gord! Thank you very much for watching the video and for commenting. Metal ones are handy and not so expensive. I just happened to have just the one that came with the lathe and for that reason decided to do this other one in plywood. I guess the metal ones will always be more stable and safe, but one advantage of the plywood one is that you can turn very close to the faceplate and if for any reason the gouge touches it, it will hit something soft like the plywood. The other is that I made this bigger, so I can tackle larger projects, I guess :) Cheers! Daniel

Nice job Daniel. I thought you were going to use magic when you brought out the cloth. Was also wondering if you could use wax inside of the nut to keep the epoxy out.
@DanielVilarino
@DanielVilarino 8 жыл бұрын
+Ted Alexander Ha! That would have been a nice trick, wouldn't it? It can work pretty well editing the video, ha, ha! the wax inside the nut should have worked as well, but for some misterious reason, I did it one time, and the epoxy still got in the threads and it was a pain to remove it. For that I thought about the plug. But, if the amount of epoxy is not that huge, it is possible that it would work just fine. Thanks for the comment my friend! Cheers! Daniel

YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB AND I AM MAKING ONE BUT I NOTICE THAT THE NUT I HAVE HAS A MACHINED SURFACE ON THE LOAD SIDE AND PRINT ON THE OUTSIDE I THINK YOU MAY HAVE INSERTED YOUR NUT INCORRECTLY CHECK IT ANYWAY IF I"M RIGHT YOU COULD FILE IT FLAT "GREAT JOB AND THANKYOU '.

@DanielVilarino 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Beverly! Thank you very much, my friend, for your comment! You are correct, very good observation, indeed, the nut has some lettering on one side and it is completely flat on the other. I should have put the side with the letters towards the interior so that the epoxy would fill any gaps and, also, it would have provided for some extra hold, and the flat side should have gone towards the load side. Still, it is working pretty well and as you said, I probably can file it flat! Cheers! Daniel

To plug the nut I would have used clay and just packed it in the nut then scored the nut on a grinder a little and cleaned it on the outside before epoxying it into the wood. Once it is set the clay is easy to remove.

Hola Carlos! Daniel

Brilliant so many people would of just drilled a hole big enough for the nut to fall in and then just filled the hole with glue, rather than to cut the nut in as you did.

@@DanielVilarino Thanks for the video Daniel! I think an easier way to fit the nuy might have been to not glue all the plywood layers together from the start - just the thickness of the nut first. Then use an electrical jigsaw to help shape the hole, maybe finish it of with a file. Lastly glue on another layer of plywood. Nice to do it with the chisel, depends what is faster. I was not so much interested in making faceplates, I used my existing faceplate to make a disk sander by screwing a piece of supawood to it, just the size of the faceplate, about 6 inches. I am using the sander to help make a bench for my lathe. (Healer, heal thyself?!) Yesterday late I made a 12 inch sander wheel and glued on the sandpaper, I will give it a go this afternoon, continuing work on the bench. Hope after the COVID-19 I can find the nuts so I can make myself sander discs with various sizes and paper grit. Thanks again!

Hi Daniel - I'm new to woodturning. So a simple question: why a 2nd hole drilled into the center of the faceplate? What is it's purpose? I'm determined to replicate your project. Bob
@DanielVilarino
@DanielVilarino 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! Thank you very much, my friend, for your comment and for watching the video. The reason of the hole in the center is to facilitate the pushing of a piece in case you decide to use turners double sided tape, instead of screws. Some times when using the tape it is difficult to detach it from the plate and thus, this faceplate can be used with screws or with the turners tape. I hope this makes sense! Cheers! Daniel
@rsauve999
@rsauve999 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, Daniel, that makes sense...I will go with the screws. Also just picked up the bolt. Mine fits fine, & the thickness is 3/4". Should I use a thicker one? The glue is drying on my 3 pieces of plywood right now! Should take the next step tomorrow.

Much easier to use a spindle tap in your sacrificial block - no metal to worry about..... see Mike Waldt's video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYjWpYlmaKaNabM
@DanielVilarino
@DanielVilarino 5 жыл бұрын
Hi my friend! I watch most of Mike's videos and I have done myself several glue block and similar with threaded holes done with a tap and the same principle would apply to a faceplate. This is just a different option, and the nut provides a solid hold. I do not understand why you say, no metal to worry about, this is a faceplate, not a glueblock, so you should never reach the nut. Cheers! Daniel
