Brilliant to include the Carnation packet. Cheap, ultra lightweight. Nice cold or hot. I think the Carnation is 8 ounces prepared. Looks like you doubled it. But if still palatable at double, then that is just added hydration!! Good if water source is tasting a little off. The milk definitely adds protein, but it still has 5 grams on its own. Still loaded with vitamins. Think I will start adding this into my preps. Thanks!! Rice and chili or pasta (elbows!) and chili. Never ever considered it until a few years ago when I just wanted more texture, especially if it is all I am eating. Then once I paired the two together, it became a norm for me. I make up it up on the side so anyone else can decide if they want it or not. If not that stuff then usually smashed up saltine crackers and/or corn bread. Maybe it is too out there but what about a convenience store MRE. Ok, so no one is going to make that their first choice to put together a meal, but more than once in my life I have put together a "meal" from a small, overpriced, limited selection gas station. Whether from lack of a work lunch, impromptu camp out, or wanting to top off my car emergency supplies (some storms having kept people stranded on highway for a night-- and one time I absolutely did stop at a convenience store and create an MRE of the sort to get me through just in case. Forgot about that until now). Thinking if depending on what they have/dont have, then letting nutrition and texture, overall belly filling satisfaction be the guide. I love the rules, and I like the creativity of coming up with something out of what is available at a specific location, or creating something out of nothing. Great to see your subscriber numbers creeping up!

Thank you! I’m looking into doing a truck stop MRE soon if I can find what I need. I might have to do some creative thinking with that one but then that’s half the fun. Funny you mention being stranded in your car because that is one of the most likely scenarios for needing a stick of food and supplies. I don’t want to have to live a couple days in my car on Taco Bell sauce packs and half a bottle of water my kid left under the seat last year.

Name suggestion: T.O.N. MRE’s…This Or Nothing 😁 Store suggestion: There are 27 Piggly Wiggly stores in Tennessee. I’m not sure if you are near any of them. I drive 20 minutes to get to one (the one in my town closed and I missed shopping there) because it has very unique (not fancy) local products. This is generally a low end/budget friendly, local items, type grocery store. *You might want to include appropriate sized binder clips in your MRE’s that have the 2 serving size drink powder and/or any other foil packet type item that might be opened and then saved for later. Can you amend the rules (I have) to allow individual sized (take out) condiments that were purchased or “obtained” in bulk?
@SethCohn238 ай бұрын
I bought a bag with a large selection of 30+ different flavors/types/brands (60 packets in all) of sauces (mostly hot sauces, but chili sauce, hoisin, more) from Amazon for $20... Mostly to try before I commit to a full bottle of that flavor or a big box of packets for other storage/prep.
@dadbudgetadventures8 ай бұрын
I think there might be a Pig within reasonable distance so I will look for that. Adding condiments isn’t necessarily against the rules, I just try to only include things I get at that same spot just for the videos. For a regular MRE I would add them.

have a couple of these sterno stoves. made a bottom grate for 1 out of a steamer plate a few years ago. then cut up a grate for a smaller spaced bars for a cross grate on top. this is my normal bbq grill these days. i can get 6 or 9 briquets in this for a hour of heating time. good for hot dogs an burgers. along with the odd lobster tail. compleats are a good item. the draw back with the mashed potatoes is they are 'instant' made with the full amount of water. a good recipe with instant mashed potatoes is to use from 2/3 to 3.4 the amount of water specified.

If I tried the same thing in Australia, I'd fail hard. It astounds me the range of items you can buy in the US and the lower prices than Australia. A lot of stuff, our chocolate bars for example don't have anywhere near the shelf life of the US varieties. Most of our stuff is like 3-9 months of shelf life. I'm not sure if it's a food safety standards difference, difference of ingredients or preparation method but canned goods are about the only thing I've seen over here that definitely have that sort of shelf life. Another great video, always happy to see a new one.

@@dadbudgetadventures yes and no. It doesn't help for long term food storage of ready to eat food however. We can buy a lot of the camping dehydrated meals and long term storage ones at camping and outdoor stores but as far as making one's own, nowhere near the range and certainly not as long shelf life. I suspect some of the range difference may also be attributed to lower population. This tends to allow for more of a monopoly buy the bigger manufacturers reducing competition and this range however that's speculation on my behalf. One of the first things I'd do if I ever went to the US is go into a grocery store just to see what's there.

There is no 'Superlo' in my part of Tennessee as far as I know but it sounds a lot like Save A Lot. A few ideas to consider if you wanted to recreate this MRE just for your use - all the items may or may not be at Superlo.: 1. There is a brand of ready cooked rice called Vee Tee. It comes in a tray with a clear, plastic cover. I suggest it because, unlike the Minute Rice cups (I use those sometimes, too) the rice is not hard and dry right out of the package - would be much preferable if you had to eat it cold. There is a little more rice in the package (it says two servings but I wouldn't go that far) and it is a little more expensive (I caught them on a pretty good sale) but, again, would be a lot more pleasant if you had to eat it cold. 2. Most grocery stores, usually in the juice aisle where the juice boxes are, will have single-serving boxes of shelf stable milk. Sometimes they will only have Hershey's chocolate milk (imagine the chocolate kick putting THAT in the Carnation) but some will have white milk. 3. I saw someone (can't remember the channel or I would give credit) using this trick so it isn't my idea. If you can't get a hold of powdered milk or the individual shelf stable milk boxes you could use powdered coffee creamer to give the mix more of a 'creamy' flavor. Keep these videos coming, please. It is always fun to see what you are going to pull out of the bag next. Oh, and I don't generally eat rice with my chili. I don't eat it 'Cincinnati' or 'Skyline' style over spaghetti, either. I prefer fried cornbread (for those who haven't had that it is just like it sounds - make cornbread but then fry it in butter in portions, like pancakes).

For new places, Aldi's is big on this side of TN, not sure about East. Have you had any trouble with durability for the homemade mre's? I saw someone complaining the Compleats weren't durable enough, so I'm curious about your experience. For the bonus item, you could add something to "personalize" it, like show us if you find something with extra fiber, or high in fat, or so on. I don't know if that's harder, it just sounds more useful than just calories.

We do have Aldi but I haven’t had any luck with them because they don’t carry much in the way of shelf stable items. I know their product is constantly changing so I will keep looking. I definitely like the idea of a customized extra item.

I had a thought for your budget MREs. I know a lot of MREs are intended to be lighter, but what about doing a C-ration? I am confident that I would prefer a can of Wolf Chili to a Hormel pouch. If it's a local emergency or one for the car weight isn't as big an issue.

I am not sure what preppeung gear you have on hand... but a pressure canner i have and use. My parents have a fancy chamber vac... so i am going to get some retort packs. They are like the mre packs woth food cooked in them. I have liads of mason jars... but they are heavy, fiddly, don't stack well and the shelf life is 5 years on retort foods. I have allergies like tomato, fish and apple just to start the list. I keep thinking... chili sounds good or some beef or chicken with creole seasoning... or that roast everyone makes with the butter ranch and pepperchini peppers. I fully intend to rotate through and use them. It will require some experimenting.

Your show is inspiring. I love Kool aid, however, I noticed that there is something in Kool aid that seems to make me thirsty. I don't know what it is. I get this kind of sticky, dry mouth feeling after drinking some Kool aid. I'm wondering if you get that feeling in your mouth?? Putting warm/hot water with the instant breakfast is genius! I had never thought of doing that!...Just thought of this one; What about mixing the instant breakfast with coffee??? (You see? You're inspiring!😀) A couple of things to add... Ritz crackers, snack size. Peanut butter packets...Maybe some kind of shelf stable cheese packets...(Is that even a thing?) I'd be running to the store right now, but I don't get paid until tomorrow! This was fun! Thank you!

I love the idea of doing instant breakfast with coffee. I think it would be a perfect addition. As far as the Kool Aid issue I’m betting it is the sugar content. Sugary drinks tend to leave me more thirsty than satisfied.

Have you ever made an MRE from a gas station convenient store? The reason I ask is I think the one year shelf life might really be a deterrent. I live in the land of spaghetti in chili which I still have no use for. Rice in chili, in an emergency situation to add some calories, yes. At home when one has easy access to cheese, sour cream and picante sauce, no. I'm not a big fan of the Hormel ready meals, but used to keep a couple in my desk. they came in handy during 2020 when rioters made it impossible to get anything to eat in the downtown area where our office was at the time. I gave them to co-workers who always seemed to forget that it wasn't safe to leave the office and were hungry.

I just found your channel, so I have a lot of catching up to do. But of course I have a couple thoughts on this video. First with the Carnation breakfast. I've seen a bunch of hiking content suggesting that it mixes well with coffee. Having a "fancy" coffee drink seems like a win to me. Second, Kool-Aid isn't something I personally want to drink. I grew up on the stuff, and have happily avoided it for a few decades now. Instead, try Propel drink mix. It's more mild, provides some electrolytes, and it's pretty cheap at Wally-world.
@dadbudgetadventures8 ай бұрын
I think going forward I’d definitely mix it with coffee. To be honest I find myself drinking water more so than the drink powders when I’m out and about. For the videos though, I like to offer some option for flavor. Definitely helps if you’re purifying your water with tabs or drops.
@umaiar8 ай бұрын
@@dadbudgetadventures Yeah, I'm definitely a water guy too. It's always water, black coffee, or Propel for me. I feel better when I keep some electrolytes in my diet, and I don't like taking pills. I also avoid most anything with sugar, though I do drink a Diet Pepsi about once a month. Somehow it's required with the occasional pizza or Chinese takeout. 😂 For water treatment, I'm a Sawyer guy. I keep one in my backpacking/camping kit, and one in my car's get home bag.

Never thought to mix rice with chili but I bet it's pretty good. Will have to give it a go. I always liked to mix a piece of cornbread into my chili though which I imagine a lot more people would find weird than they do mixing in rice. Have a Samoan friend who swears by mixing a spoonful of mayonnaise into chili which I thought sounded horrible so I had to try it and it was pretty good kind of gave it an unctuous texture and a deeper richness to the flavor.

How about this idea? Your chanel, your rules. We appreciate the many new products we learn about. We understand that our local Philippine supermarkets will only stock or order a small percentage of these items for us. Still, we are happy to be able to obtain more variety than we otherwise would have. To keep boiled water (could be a necessity in an emergency situation) palatable, most of our family have settled on sachets of ice tea mix, intended to yield one (1) liter. You are free to adjust for personal preference. . The tea is available in many flavours including apple, lemon as well as tropical fruit flavours. Most markets do not stock fresh milk in the dairy case as we used to have in the US. One (1) liter nitrogen packed cartons are the norm. Fortunately, there are several high quality brands of powdered milk imported from Europe and the sachets are available in a variety of sizes. We can work with these products. We do have the S&R wholesale club, and that store stocks many Kirkland brand products.
