I seldom actually fired the guns, being up “on the hill” mostly, but I did help shoot mortars on occasion when they were short of crew. I also fired several “Sundown guns” for ceremonies, and you have what is close to a 75mm pack gun howitzer. I’d love to have one and adjust fires with it. Making mashed potatoes! Kudos!!

I would add an Arduino and an electronic gas valve to make a timed gas release, so that you can dial in an exact amount of gas based on the time the valve is open, and always be able to repeat that same amount of gas. You could even have various preset options for more or less gas to hit a target distance. Or go all out with a laser rangefinder too and design an algorithm that calculates exactly how much gas and at what angle is needed to hit that target! Lol Edit: you'd probably need a pressure sensor also to measure gas pressure, because as the pressure in the gas tank drops after a few shots you'd need to hold the valve open longer to get the same amount in the firing chamber.

i love that build especially that you got most of it for free. the oxygen is a bad idea because it makes the combustion to fast and the pressure spike to pointy (risk of shattering). what you could do to improve reliable and repeatable combustion is to measure the fuel and mount a small cpu fan inside the chamber to mix the gas since you wanted to have a battery powered igniter anyway. use a 3 dollar arc generator module for that. the box shaped ones are usually plasma and the round ones usually stun. the stun ones are not as electronics friendly and draw more ampere. it has been one year we would love to see a part 2

I love the improvement ideas. Suggestion, if you are going to add oxygen as part of the fuel, then have the actual barrel be all one piece with no holes and inject the gaseous fuel directly inside that barrel and the igniter also inside the same barrel. This will give your gun quite a bit more umph! Might freak the neighbors out a bit as it will also give a much louder report! But then, not just potatoes, but how about bloated tins of old food? Since the new power will give you a greater range, then you would not have to worry so much about breathing he stench of rotted food! lol

I love it. I am a Propane technical trainer. I too built a hand held potato gun. I used map gas when everybody else was using hair spray. What I did to get a reliable mixture was I took the turbo torch and I used the venturi that comes with it. I was getting 300 yards out of a 4' x 2" barrel. I had a ball valve I would open, shoot in the gas and then close the valve to fire. I also sharpened the end of the barrel so as I shoved an over sized potato in, it was sized to fit. With the perfect mixture and a tight seal in the barrel, it was epic. I like the idea of the drilled breach. Perhaps a test could be performed at Sand Land to see which it better.

Years ago we made a propane powered potato gun. We used 2 quarter turn ball valves with a pipe in-between. The way it worked was gas would come in the first valve with the other shut filling the between pipe. Then you close the first valve and open the second valve to release the gas into the combination chamber. This way can be fine tuned by adding length or cutting the pipe between the valves shorter. It took a while to get it right but when it the right volume size it was very consistent.

I made one similar. It didn't look as correct as that. It was more of a battleship style. I cut the cap threads in 3 positions so that it had a quick unlock instead of unscrewing, I used a steel tube from leftover conduit as a barrel and mine breech loads, but uses black powder....... It's not as sophisticated but it's loved at 4th of July parties!

If you place holes in the nd of the inner chamber you should put larger holes and only about half the distance that you currently have. Also, if you want a bigger bang and more power consider going to an oxy acetalene gas mixture and use a taser as your starter. I also see that there is a lot of unburned fuel out of the end of the barrel. The barrel should be lengthened by at least another foot and use a can of construction foam to take up th4e interior of the barrel shroud. That will help support the added length and give it added strength. I have made one like yours before for shooting soft drink cans and other things I don't want to say. My howitzer can throw a can of soda 1200 yards at a relatively low arc. It explodes when it hits and will leave very big holes in whatever it hits. It will also shoot other devices that will explode on contact using a percussion cap and black powder. You can actually make some really great mortars too.
@jonnyblayze51492 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sounds good (if it's even real) until one time the pressure is too much for the soda can and it exploded in the breach or the barrel.

Use the pure alcohol 96% instead of any goofy plopellent (like your "hair propane"). Feel the huge difference. P.S. Gasonile - is the best fuel. But gasoline need the RIGHT stoichiometry with air. (6 drops per 1 liter empty bottle)
@chrismoody13423 жыл бұрын
Mine is a challenger for yours. Runs on Oxy/Acetylene, schedule 60 pipe. spark plug/coil ignition, pneumatic recoil dampers, elevation, folding stabilizers and interchangeable barrel bores and lengths, 20’ remote ignition switch for keeping well away. Best shot for a potato, just short of 1500’. Can’t get much further due to 💯 potato failure. Hard ammo, who knows how far it could reach; but I don’t want a catastrophic failure due to over pressure. Oxy/Acetylene is many times more reactive than Propane. 😎

This howitzer is awesome, but I feel like there room to improve. My one recommendation is that if you want to take over small countries faster, you need a faster cannon. So instead of a screw on breach door, try a non threaded cap and put some rubber sealant around it. Then, attach a small hinge to one end, and an industrial latch (similar to those of a suitcase or chest) on the other. This will cut down on the time it takes to reload. Otherwise, everything else is awesome, maybe you should add a cool muzzle on the end though

My best potato gun was using start gas (diacetyl ether) It also had an electric fan to air it out, as it needed mostly air, but just a tiny amount of the ether gas. If you make one more solid, try acetylene and oxygen (just one percent acetylene to 99% oxygen) Should send stuff to the moon as it is highly explosive. Myloading method was to use a piece of the same pipe as the barrel, but filed slightly sharp from the outsie. I would use very large potatoes and run them through the small piece, to have a perfect fitting cartridge

Try stuffing the gap in your your chamber with something with a lot of surface area that wont ignite (nails etc). Myth-busters sewer explosion myth took advantage of this to get more pop from their methane. The burn will propagate through faster with surface area. So add surface area slowly to avoid a blowout. I think that would add more power safely then adding an oxidizer.
@saveitforparts2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I'll have to watch that episode for sure! The internal barrel setup that I have already adds a little surface area, but it might also restrict pressure flow, people seem to have mixed opinions on that. Might be time to do some practical tests from a safe distance away :-)
