Which of the ingredients leaves the residue, or is it the combination of all the dry ingredients? Also, do you put your detergent in first?
@handandhomemade

I believe it’s the soap bar that leaves the residue. You can tweak the recipe as needed, so if you want to reduce the bar of soap and only use half, you can! I put it straight into the drum before adding my clothes 😊

Soooo…is this actually cheaper than using store bought or just cleaner ingredients?
@handandhomemade
@handandhomemade 8 ай бұрын
For me, it’s both. 😊 It costs me $26.39 (with tax from Walmart) for all the ingredients to make TWO batches. My last batch lasted me roughly 6 months, so two batches will last me almost all year. Sometimes it lasts a little less than 6 months depending on how many loads per day I am running and the size of them. Regardless, this is much cheaper than buying Tide or Gain where I’m located. It’s an added perk that it’s cleaner ingredients in my opinion 😊

@@handandhomemade Possibly that's more than you need.....from what I've learned, most of us use a lot more than we need....soap isn't what cleans our laundry....soap just makes water "wetter"...the water going thru the fabric is what cleans it. I learned this from The Laundry Guy aka The Laundry Evangelist aka Patric (sic) Richardson. He has a degree in textiles & has written a book (Laundry Love) about doing laundry. The upside, too, is if you use less, your powder will be even MORE economical ! 😀😀 I make my own, too, & use same products you do.

I’ve only ever used the liquid castile soap. I don’t think washers these days use nearly enough water as it is needed to properly wash and rinse clothes let alone add a solid to the mix. In my opinion liquid just dissolves better. My personal recipe includes 1/8 cup unscented castile liquid soap, 1 cup of washing soda, borax and baking soda each. And 1/2 cup of unscented epson salt. I usually multiply this recipe by 4 to make bigger volume of detergent to last longer. I also add 1/4 of white vinegar to the machine as well as I have to use public laundry mats and god knows how often they clean their machines, lol. I’ve learned that the key with using liquid castile over solid is that after you have mixed everything together, including adding any fragrance if you so choose to do this, is to wait for 1-2 hrs to allow your powder to air dry before closing up your storage container. Stirring occasionalI y to make sure any clumps are pressed out. I personally prepare my mix in one of those deep disposable aluminum foil pans which allows the powder to evening dry quickly and this pan easily bends so I can form a funnel with it to fill all my glass jars. I only have to make batches of my detergent twice a year. Im a single person and that’s with using 1 tablespoon per average load. I have super sensitive skin and hard water and I’ve yet to date had any issues with this recipe😊

Hi! 😊 I have linked an article explaining why I use Borax in my nontoxic laundry detergent (only in my detergent- I don’t use it elsewhere). but you can leave it out if you prefer! I believe it will still clean well 😊 Borax is sodium tetraborate or sodium borate- NOT boric acid (hydrogen borate). It is a salt of boric acid but it is not chemically the same. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) gives borax as a safety rating of 5-6. However, the studies they used contained both borax AND boric acid (which are different) and the warnings referred to ingestion, eye contact, or long-term undiluted use. You can decide what is best for you and your family 🤍 wellnessmama.com/natural-home/borax-safe/
