Look man, I'm just gonna say it. This thing is great. I love that you're using a friction drive "clutch concept" ( if I can put it that way). That is a nice compact machine that doesn't eat up room in the shop and is practical for the application at hand. Great build!

The one thing I would change is the slide; instead of relying on grease, install rollers so the slide is smoother and more controlled, otherwise an excellent build!

You can't see in this video but I show it in my earlier ones the guide is lined with nylon 66 with journals cut into them a replacement for brass. So it is very smooth issues with rollers is they do not tolerate a lot of vibration so would wear much quicker. The plates are adjustable and very cheap to replace.

I'd definitely recommend it Mark, I love it. If you are able to I'd definitely recommend getting a small set up such as a little gas forge, few hammers and a make shift anvil to start with such as a piece of rail track. I built my first forge using a few old bricks and a old hoover set to blow. Just be careful haha.

Looks great man. And it seems to have a nice push behind it. I've seen scrappy the power hammer too! I liked his use of the railway as the hammer face. I've been debating hard on if i should get a nice tredel hammer, or get Roy's air hammer and build a power hammer like this. Im around 3 years in to my smithing venture and i wanna take some bigger steps towards a small career. I have friends in the hippie/fire scene and ive been told live demos would fit right in. How much did it cost ya to get it going, start to finish? Thanks man!🍻

This hammer is great for small stock as it can keep it's momentum and gives it enough time for the hammer to travel to allow for a good strike. I use it for blades as it draws out thin material well, I wouldn't recommend it for thick material upto 20mm + or so. In all it cost me approximately £400. I had to purchase a motor and the stub axle set for a trailer and a suitable spring. The rest I built myself as I had this in the back of my head for a few years and just kept gathering offcuts suitable for the build. I'd recommend the belt hammer design also as they seem quite effective. I'd like to build my own variation of that eventually to compare them.

No it's a very basic machine really, I just intended to use it for drawing out small stock such as knife blanks and scrolling etc. Suitable for when there is a lot of repetition involved.

I did and even have some of the parts made ready for it such as the crankshaft and pulley wheels. I would like to also try this concept as well, maybe later on I will try building a belt driven variant.

The hammer currently runs on a 1400 rpm motor would be more suitable with a 2800. Don't have time currently to mess around with it due to other work. But when it all settles down I will continue with modifying it.

Hi, may I ask a questioin - how do you get the steel for these builds and how much do you pay for it (per kg?) I've been to a few scrapyards in my area (South Leicestershire), they just don't have any solid pieces (just sheetmetal and other stuff but no "chunks" of solid steel round/square, not even any hot rolled sections). I don't even know what to make the hammer or the anvil from. There is a metal merchant in the area but they're charging over the moon. Apparently scrap should be in the range of 30 -50p per kg for solid, but "new" is 2 - 3 pounds! So basically, I can't find any substantial bits of steel to make anything of, unless I order online, and probably pay more than buying a ready-made power hammer. I'm talking about the massive stuff, no problem for flimsy rolled section. By the way love the design. I'm super limited for space but looking to make finer work anyway so that'd be a dream.

At the time I worked as a fabricator so the materials were pretty easy to come by due to offcuts from jobs that we had been working on. The local scrap yard to me also stocks a really good variety of steel from flat bar, solid round stock etc. I had been saving pieces for this hammer also for quite some time, I initially begun the design for it with rough sketches back in 2017. My best advice would be look for local fabricating companies in your area and contact them about possibly buying some offcuts from them. The company I used to work for would throw away large amounts of good quality steel to the scrap. Hope this helps 👍

@@computername no problem, I had to adapt my original drawings to fit with what I could get my hands on also. A lot of mine on box section stuff but used thick walled box when possible, if I couldn't I would reinforce it with gussets as much as I could.

Check if you have any hydraulic cylinder repair places in your area, a piece of old chromed rod would make a decent striker ? I have a couple of scrap yards I visit, one is hit and miss with whatever turns up, but I've snagged some decent stuff. The other has steel section (seconds I think) sitting outside slowly rusting away. Some of it hasn't moved in years, but the price keeps going up as if it was new stock !
