The material used in this video (affiliate):
Choices of heart material: amzn.to/2AcU1PM
Different fleece material choices: amzn.to/2xQs2no
Homemade quilt that is inexpensive and very easy to make. Two pieces of fleece 2 yards long, braided the edges. See link below to search for material that may suit your needs. I turned this into a birthday present that was a big hit. This one I used heart print because my girlfriend loves anything with hearts. You could use camo print for your son or husband. Male or female can make or receive this. Just how creative you wanna be??
Links below are affiliate links. They cost you nothing extra by purchasing the material through the provided links. I do however get a very small referral fee for providing the links, again at no additional cost to you. Just look at it like you are giving me a small thanks (at Amazons expense) for providing the handy little video. Thanks everyone!! Have a blessed and wonderful day :-)
Here is an Amazon link to the heart fleece fabric I used: amzn.to/1jxrFRO
Totally up to you, I have provided an Amazon Search for fleece to possibly help find the material for your needs: amzn.to/1ljOBmx

I have an idea that would be great for your grandma. I have started putting pockets on my blankets so you can fold it up into a pillow. It can be used as a pillow or a blanket with a pocket to put her feet in to keep them cozy. I made one for my grandmothers birthday this year to celebrate her 103rd birthday and she loves the pocket! If you want to know how to do it, please email me at grey_tala@yahoo.com. You can also see my blankets on Facebook.

I made this quilt oversized for my daughter for Valentine's Day 2013 and I used a Topsy Tail for the braiding part to make it flow a little easier. Great teaching video. I referred to it often. Whole process took me about three hours and it washes so well and is so durable!!!

Glad you like it and thanks for using it as a reference video. I reckon that means I did good :-) . I've got the material to make another for my Grandmother. She a Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan, so I got Wildcats fleece. I know someone who made the "knotted tassels" one, it kept coming untied. With this braid, there is no way for it to come undone. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!

Congratulations on your baby girl! Thank you :-) Glad my video helped you make a decision of what style you wanted. thanks so much for this tutorial I just made mine in under 3 hrs cutting was the most time consuming. I also noticed the larger I cut the holes the flatter the straps laid and it was also easier to pull pieces thru. thanks so much I love it!

+LaJean Wilder Yea .. the cutting seems to take forever its so repetitive. It's really a more sturdy yet artistic approach to doing the edges. I know someone who did the "cut and tie the tassels", it kept coming untied in the wash. That cant happen with the braid. Glad you liked the video and thanks for taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!

A long time after I saw this, I tried to do the braided edge with my daughter, it came out terrible ! The little pieces were sticking out, & some strips ripped because the slit was too low. It's a larger size , & the fleece was thick. I may just cut it off all around & try to sew it. Yours came out so beautiful and perfect.

Super tutorial. Like the way that you used the double layers for braiding as feel it gives a much nicer finish than the single layer technique does. Question: Am I correct that you recommend working from the wrong side of the blanket? THANK YOU! P.S: Apologize for asking as perhaps you mentioned it, but I am hard-of-hearing so may have missed it in your commentary.
@Homemadeidea
@Homemadeidea 11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comments and you are very welcome. Yes, I was working from the back of the blanket. That created the thin red trim around the front & more bold braid on the back to contrast against the solid red. It's really up to you where you want the braid to be. If you work from that back of the blanket like I did, the braid will be on the back and trim up front. Or, if you work from the front of the blanket, the braid will be on the front and trim edge on the back. It's really a matter of preference and not a right or wrong thing. I like the double layer also because you can use contrasting colors to create a better effect and much warmer. She sleeps with the blanket on her bed every night .. so I take she liked it :-)

Thank you! I've been researching these tied blankets to figure out which I like best and yours has my vote! I'm gonna use this technique for blankets for homeless men... the larger coverage and permanent tie is what did it, plus this looks great !! :) p.s. do you have a brother? lol

I was actually looking for a better video on how to cut the fringe before braiding because I felt that the other videos made them too long and the braids didn't look as nice. You also had a good point about them taking too much material off of the final blanket, making it smaller. I really hope your girl liked it. I'll probably use this video to make a blanket with this nice braided edge. You have an awesome day too!
@Homemadeidea

Another thing I seen on the fringe. They tend to become untied in the wash. At the end where i tied that one off, I added a few stitches to make sure that it didn't become untied.

OMG this must've taken a long time! but i like how much neater it looks than the tie blankets. i've got a crochet hook so that'll probably come to my advantage! actually, how long did this take?

Great tutorial! I just have a couple of questions, how do you start off for the first braid? In the video you already had it started and it looked like you were at your third or fourth knot. Also, to end the knot, does that go for all four corners or does it continue all around the blanket and end in one corner? Please reply asap, I would like to do this for my boyfriend by Valentines Day :)

Thank you, glad you liked it!! Yea .. I got carried away and forgot to video the first braid. The first braid is basically just like the rest. Pick a spot to start (I started in the middle of the "foot" of the blanket). Have 2 tabs that you want to be your "starters", the one on the right will go through the slot of the one on the left. Pull the braid down tight like I demo'd in the video. Continue all the way around including the corners not stopping until you get to where you started. Then tie it off and you are done. I'm going to make my girlfriend some pillows to match the blanket for Valentines Day. I will video it and post it here on my channel. Be sure to subscribe so you will know when I post it. Feel free to ask any questions if you need help. Thanks for checking out my video :-)

Yours blanket is beautiful. But, can I do this with just 1 layer of fleece?
@Homemadeidea

Thank you for the kind comment :-). Yes 1 layer will also work fine. The edge will not have the multicolored effect but it will still be nice. Thanks for checking out my video!! Have a great day!

How many yards did you use for this? And I think it awesome and sexy as hell that you did this....not only can you fix her car but you made her a blanket too. Glad to know my hubby isn't the only awsome man out there. Kudos to you.

kabloom Well .. thank you very much!! :-) It was 3 yards of each color. It was a bit of change from getting burned by weld splatter to soft furry cloth .. lol. It was some creative fun though. Glad that you got a good man and you recognize that you do .. that's very commendable on your part! Thanks for taking the time to leave a very flattering comment! Oh .. if you your hubby is into cars and bikes check out my other channel: kzbin.info. Thanks again!! Have a great day!!

+Ria Kaur Well.. It took me a couple of hours. But I was slow. I usually build hot rod car engines. I did that one for my x-gf. Havent made one since. But I'm gonna do another in a few days that will be a Kentucky Wildcats one.

I was using a piece of wire that ties computer cables together during shipment. Much like a bread tie wire except longer.

did you only tie off at the end or on all four sides?
@Homemadeidea

Just that one place, the braid holds the rest intact. I made another one a few weeks ago. I just haven't edited the video and pushed it to KZbin. It demonstrates better the method of starting and finishing. Hopefully, I'll get it to KZbin within a week or so. So, keep an eye out for the release. If you subscribe to the channel it will send you an email letting you know when I release new videos. Thanks for checking it out! Have a great day!
