Nice video. Couple of tips for you. #1 You can use wood clamps to hold the wood pieces being cut. #2 On the bolt head, add a lock washer & that should lock them in. Also leave the tightening nut fully exposed. Doesn't matter...

i really like that you assume that we do not have certain equipment ,un like others who have every thing, or they seem to any way, i too started many years ago with a cheap jig saw, old skill 1/4'' chuck drill only forward,lol and old set of missing drill bits bitts, and a rusty Stanley chesile ,lol oh and a 12'' handyman saw,lol in all worth like $5 total in a garage sale ,lol and today many of my tools and jigs were made by me or paid for by the projects the first tools made,lol keep up the great work, and the different teckneiks to make the same device ,this i trully enjoy from your videos, christopher

Hey, i have an idea on how to improve this, what if you made the bolt go through the cylinder and attaches to a bearing on the other side which sits in another piece of plywood and helps the drill handle the horizontal load from sanding?
@patrickbrett668 жыл бұрын
Craxler using a length of studding ( threaded rod) will be best for this idea, I was going to suggest this method also.
@scratchy1017 жыл бұрын
If you do a lot of sanding, then this is a must. Drill press bearings are designed for axial load, not radial load, so having an unsupported drum can wear out your drill press bearings quickly. Lee Valley actually sells a bearing support kit for just this purpose. www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,42500&p=20202 "Mounting a drum sander on a drill press is a convenient way to sand, but there are two shortfalls. First, the bearings on a drill press are designed for axial loading - side loading causes quill wear and run-out. Second, extra-long drums tend to deflect as you apply pressure when sanding, producing a sloping edge on the workpiece."
@Bright88889 жыл бұрын
Thank you Marius. Though the idea is fairly simple, the perfection in your work makes your video interesting and inspiring. The options and explanations you give for wrapping the sand paper around the wooden cylinders make your video quite helpful for those who intend to build the sanding spindles. What are the dimensions of the spindles? Are they 1", 2" & 3" in diameter and 3" in height?

@MarkMcCluney9 жыл бұрын
When I'm counterboring something to accept a bolt-head I use bit with the same diameter as the face-to-face seperation of the bolt. Then on tightening, the head bites into the wood and makes a hex-head cavity which stops the bolt from rotating, in case friction won't hold it. Different materials will behave differently (it has always worked in MDF for me) and perhaps not very 'purist' but it gets the job done.
@MariusHornberger9 жыл бұрын
Mark McCluney Yeah I know that. But in my case that could have been 14mm. I have such a drill bit, but it's a special one and probably no one else has one that size. But as I tightened the nut really hard, I'm confident that this friction is enough.

I wonder, if you could or should put a bearing in the buttom of the spindle. This would take a lot of load from the drill presses bearings. But of course, it needs to be alligned everytime you use it. Or you build a frame around the spindle with bearings on the top and the bottom. And put a flexible shaft in the drill press to drive it. Alligment wouldn't be that critical then. Just some thoughts I have about such spindles for quite some time. As you sad... drill presses and their bearings a not designed for radial loads.
@MariusHornberger9 жыл бұрын
ensen89 Interesting ideas, but for sanding the bearings are good enough. It's just the turning that's critical.

It would be better to put the bolt right into the drill press table for support and to relieve pressure on the quill .

with the round timber wheels why don't you use bolts with less thread near he head of the bolt cut the bolt heads off have nuts on both ends and your left with a shaft on one end this way this fits better into the drill press chuck also no need to buy from hardware often used for attaching rubber sanding discs to drills

Never tighten the bolt end. Always tighten the nut end. Tightening from the bolt end means you are tightening against the friction of the shaft of the bolt. It will never be as tight.
