Brilliant as Einstein: simple as possible but no simpler. A dying friend gave me a Ditch Witch with a 15hp Generac engine. No air cleaner, no gas tank but it starts when I shoot a little gas in the carb. There is plenty of room for the air cleaner and a mounting bracket close by so I will probably use an old electric switch box to contain the foam filter and to mount a gas tank. You have saved an old ditcher sir!

@@MrDanoconnor Yup, I had to get a little creative because for my application I have to space the air box out otherwise it will hit the choke handle. But your idea pointed me in the right direction. Keep up the good work, greatly appreciated!

I followed your video to a tee for a snow blower I got off Craigslist for $100. The heater box was completely missing. I used the same single-gang electrical box with the same mess of holes drilled in the cover. The box contains standard air filter foam. The solution cost a total of $4.00 and works perfectly! This is what the Internet is all about. Folks help other folks get stuff done on the cheap! I owe you a beer!

Small organic farmer here. Just fixed up bcs 725 Acme engine that are difficult to get parts for. Engine wouldn't start until I pulled off the old air filter in shop after working on carb. Looked online and I can get one from Italy to Illinois????? On ebay they ask $40???? Think I will try your method to fill in the canister. Thankyou for thinking. People like you makes me think there may be hope for humans yet. (Smile)

The engine drawing does show a BREATHER ELEMENT behind the carb, and it actually has a scotchbright like material inside the breather element. The breather element being behind the carb must do something but Im not sure what good it does filtering debris after the carb. Also I asked many so called "small engine techs" about the missing Tecumseh air filter and they said there is NO DIRT in the cold snow weather so it's not needed. I still like your idea no matter how the engine is used. Thanks.
@Tater1337 Жыл бұрын
that is a crankcase breather, it is meant to vent excess crankcrase pressure to the carb, and older engines didn't have one, or had it just drain out to the outside

Dan, This the only vid I've seen on this. I'll try it. I put a GC160 from a snow blower on a go kart & realized after a while there's No air filter. Not a huge deal, but not good over time. Ebay has 2 types of GC160 air filters. One for mowers angled & and one that's flat. Guessing the flat one may work better. $6 to $15 bucks on Ebay..I'll have to rig the choke, so trying to imagine which one will work best. Or just make one like you

Thanks, I plug the line going to the Primer Bowl With the air Fillter and the Choke On I find the Primer Bowl is NOT Really Needed. It May take a couple of more pulls to start it but I have no problem. You can allways just cut the Primer bowl off the box & mount the primer bowl somewhere else with a longer hose if you feel it is needed..

Hey Dan, Great idea. I'll be trying it on my 7hp Tecumseh but I am wondering if you can post a video showing the filter components separated and specifically where the 2 bolts tie into the carb body! Thanks, Mike

Great idea just one question. Have you ever had problems with the filter frosting up in the winter? I want to put this on my snow blower just a little worried it will suck snow and bog the engine.
@MrDanoconnor10 жыл бұрын
In the winter you can take the sponge out and put in a piece of steel wool to filter the dirt, that works well, Goiod Luck

good idea, I have a wisconsin AkN with no air filter, this will work!
Thank you so much, one of my idiot neighbors leaned on my mower (that I picked up from the trash and the only problem was the spark plug was slightly bent) that I had just fixed. And while the air filter was off the mower rolled and destroyed the fliter and housing so now im left with no air filter and a sheared flywheel key.

Dan, what do you do with the primer inlet on the carb when you dont use the hot box.....Great idea by the way!
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
OK it is 2017. I just bought a snowblower motor ( a great deal,-- brand new for $50 Canadian broken oil drain tube) I fixed it). No air filter of course. This is giving me an idea if I use it on a tiller. Google brought me here. thanks.
@MrDanoconnor12 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If Conditions are NOT Very Dusty, you can do without soaking it in oil.
@toddjpiascik36535 жыл бұрын
I have three Simplicity walk behind tractors myself and I've had different engines on but my relevant dilemma is I picked up for $90 an old 60's Sno-Away snow blower, runs and works great other than carb is a little fussy and alas under the bolted on engine shroud there is no air cleaner on the intake tube. The part number is Briggs 393616 and is either not available or sells for as much as $75! A NOS on eBay for 25 plus 10 shipping, F that I'm doing this instead! If anybody has a problem with how their engine runs with the filter they made then you're probably not able to draw in enough air and needs more holes and/or a bigger housing or too dense foam inside but tinker and you'll win in the end.

This is brilliant but... I tried it today on a 2.5 honda clone that was missing its air filter. The engine would not start until I removed the sponge. It was starved for air. Putting the sponge back in immediately kills it. I wrung it out extremely well too and even stabbed a few holes through it.
@MrDanoconnor8 жыл бұрын
I believe that perhaps your Carb needs proper adjustment or rebuild. If you did in fact run it a long time without a filter, adding a filter will NOT fix the damage that was done. Also, check to make sure the choke is opening properly. Good Luck.
@o2jmpr18 жыл бұрын
MrDanoconnor I'm sure you're right about that. I had to soak the carb and pick the jet and needle seat just to get it going. it was my first time and I'm not confident it's cleaned well enough.A new carb is in the mail and I'll test again. Thanks again! This is the kind of brilliant, American know- how we need more of. Great post!

If the sponge works, that is brilliant. Are ou sure this breathes okay?
@MrDanoconnor7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the engine size , You Must Experiment with different sponges. You can also take a Home Hot Air Furnace Paper Element Filter and just cut it to size, that works great also and you can get MANY Filters cut from one element, making the Cost even Cheaper! Good Luck

There are only Two Screws that go into the carb, No Bolts or nuts. One on each side of the throat, you should see the two holes, if the screws are missing they are easy to replace. Standard thread. Thanks for the idea! I just built one of these things (air box and filter) from a single gang electrical box purchased at Menard's. Last week I looked over the electrical box selection at Lowe's but none of them were smooth enough on the back for the carb/box mating surface. Sadly, I ordered a factory kit off the Internet for $21.00 US. Shipping was around $20.00 before I visited Menard's. Oh well. Here's the result: facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10206947744040815.1073741892.1494916156&type=1&l=3299ad05ef
