Just fixed a Dr.Field Brush Mower with a Kawasaki 17hp motor following your instructions. I loosened the governor control arm bolt, shimmed the control arm so that the link to the carb was full open. The control arm had a through hole in it, so a put a small Allen wrench through the hole to rotate the shaft (verses your plier method) ( hats off the the Kawasaki employee who came up with adding the hole). Re tightened the control arm bolt and the motor fired up and ran through the throttle purrrrfectly. Thanks Taryl!

Hello Taryl, Thanks for this great video. I've been having some issues with my 14.5 hp Intek engine surging. I figured it was something with the carb. So I took it apart and cleaned it. It was very clean and everything seemed good. Put it back on and still the surging. The weird part is it got worse as it warmed up. I watched this video and thought this sounds like maybe my governor is a little worn out and needs to be tightened up. Low and behold I moved it about a quarter of an inch. It's now running perfectly. Thanks for this great video. Mike von Schlederer

Thanks Taryl. Saved my day. I took off crankcase cover and realized I had no idea how the governor went back together. Last small engine I did was 30 years ago with fan blown governor. Your videos filled in all the gaps. One thing though, when I followed your instructions exactly it came out all wrong. The engine would race way too fast. The problem was that this is a chipper with with the cutter wheel right on the crankshaft, no gears. Half throttle was as fast as you would ever want it to go. So, instead of holding the throttle at full when tightening the lever to the crank, I held it at half throttle. This must be how it was done at the factory because it worked the same way as brand new. Thanks again for the videos. Gotta say I appreciated the camera work.
@colindgrant3 жыл бұрын
It’s so simple when you finally get it! The governor gear has a maximum throttle position and the carburetor has a maximum throttle position. You are trying to synchronize them. Synchronizing the maximum positions let’s the governor do its job. But adjusting spring tension is how you set the engine RPM that you want when the throttle lever is at maximum! Great video!

TARYL IS THE MAN! I had a 14.5 hp B & S that would either idle or run 9k rpm. Did some research and found that the previous owner had removed that pinch bolt on the governor arm. I replaced the bolt but was unsure of how to adjust the governor until I watched this. Thanks again!
@AvaPxiaO8 ай бұрын
You are sure it was 9K measured, not 8800rpm or 9140rpm ? I wouldn't be surprised if you had neighbors one with a B&S head on their head, another with a rod sticking out of their neck, and one with a crank stuck in his ... At such speeds wear eye protection and hydrate adequately ...

Once again Taryl bails my fat out of the fire. Had an old 7 hp Briggs that needed the governor adjusted. Bought an old brush cutter at a sale that didn't run. Taryl has helped me rebuild the carb, put a magneto ignition system on it and set the governor. The old girl was built in 1970 and hadn't been running for 15 years. Now it runs great!! I can't imagine what a shop would have charged for all this. I would love to spend time with him just to observe his work. I enjoy this stuff so much that I find myself buying old engine driven equipment just so I can fix it. I hope you win the lottery or something, you have saved plenty of people a ton of money.

After watching this particular video I have fixed my governor linkage but still have an unsolvable one that got my patience’s limit. The only way to have my lawnmower engine run smooth is by removing the air filter (is brand new original). With the air filter on, the engine goes high low high low constantly, (there is a name for it but not in my vocabulary yet). By the way, the engine is a Tecumseh 3.8 hp. Hats off to your excellent videos Taryl. Adjusting the government looks like fun. Last year my John Deere blower seized up from a $.05 oil filler plug that came off while round that corner. Busy busy to fix so this season just looking for something to get me through the winter. Picked up a Ford ST 826 (yes Ford made by Gilson I guess) snowblower with 8 hp Briggs 190402 Snow Gard engine. Pretty good shape for age but no spark and china carb replacement is touchy. Put in solid state coil and fired up but ran erratic and such. Took head off and head gasket was blown a bit between exhaust and intake port. Ordered new gasket and replaced. Cylinder looked not too bad and valves seemed to be OK in operation for now. Fired up and now had sparks from recoil area. Screen was rubbing a bit and chewed some edges up. Snipped those rough edges off and replaced. Fired up and starter clutch acting up. Put new one on and OK now. Started up and full throttle seems RPM bit high or bit lean and muffler starting to glow red with some sparks and blue flame. Noticed that when slowing down throttle the motor actually sped up (yes). Something fishy in linkage so figured out that last guy that replaced carb had put the second thinner rod going back up to the butterfly on the wrong bottom hole. Put it on the empty hole on the governor/governor spring bracket. Changed that and took head off to check piston and valves again. Seemed OK. Checked and set governor. Put back together and fired up. Running pretty good with throttle rod slowing down engine now and muffler only getting a bit red inside in the dark (maybe a bit lean still). Took for a test run in the dark in fresh Canuk snow storm tonight with head lamp. The beast throws that snow ! OK here is the latest glitch . While running in the dark I noticed that when releasing the drive lever I noticed a it was throwing a yellowish spark as the drive rod rubbed up against the handle bar frame (engine run doesn't seem to hiccup though ). Whats a happening here ha ha ? So that Ford has a kill switch going up to the drive lever area and you have to depress the lower lever before you release the top lever to go ( works in reverse of most blowers as usually you depress single lever to go but guess Ford had extra safety in mind so operator does run in front of blower on a bad day or eat up the neighborhood. Awkward at best.) Anyway just trying to figure out where this spark is coming from. Obviously some coil source going astray and there is a kill on the lever and a momentary kill switch on the neutral position and a key to boot. With all that it still tries to drive away on its own sometimes ha ha . Think I will remove all the kill switches except the key. Hoping to resolve where the short is originating from and whether slight glow inside muffler is normal for the fire breathing beast. Will put tach on tomorrow. Finding a video showing the linkage setup on that engine is hard to find as different from the two rod setup and the newer setup. Cheers
