This panel can put out close to 100 watts kzbin.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

It circulated by a 1hp electric pump. I can’t see your pool getting warmer with the volume of tubing and pump, but good luck. I sure give you an A+ for everything you do. Your a mad man! I got an idea for that pump system. First you need to separate the inlet (pump) and the outlet hose as far as possible. My suggestion for this is to take water from the hot tub side and if that pump CRANKS as much as you think it will during sunny days then just build a couple more of your "hot boxes" and have the outlet reach the complete other side of your pool. Hopefully you can hide the hosing. This will increase that ever important surface area and stop you from taking the warmer water and having it recirculate through the system over and over again instead of mixing with the pool water. Of course there are many things you could do but sticking with what you have started with I would make these changes. Good work.

Love the pool heater, i made a similar one a couple years ago, heats water extremely well! You gotta be carefull for the kids tho, on a hot day that water can be almost dangerously hot, so u probably want the warm water exiting on the bottom of your pool. Couple tips tho, you should switch the pump to the other hose, because right now the warm water will cross over the colder water in the heatpanel and you will lose quite a lot of heat there. The other way around minimizes heatloss. Something else, you might wanna insulate your heated waterhose or make the distance to the pool as short as possible, also because of heatloss on the way.

Our neighbor built a solar heater/solar power panel to heat his pool. He built a large box (12' x 8' x 6"). The tubes inside had the water going through. The front of it had solar electric panels to power the pump. Since they were black, they also heated the tubes underneath. Thus, when the sun was out, it heated the water & powered the pump. It worked great. Especially up here in Wisconsin. Now the swim from mid May thru October.

Someone else said it but a very practical addition to this would be a battery in between the pump and the panel to keep the pump running at a decent clip for the majority of the time. Stores any extra energy in the battery on a real clear day, and keeps it going for a little while when the panel isn’t generating.

@nerys71
@nerys71 5 жыл бұрын
that is not likely to work sadly. you would need to make it SUBSTANTIALLY bigger. adding heat is not the issue. adding more heat than the pool will naturally "lose" is the issue. you have to generate more heat even if just a tiny bit more than the "heat loss" of the pool itself to the air. I don't know the math to figure it out but I am guessing you will need to make that solar water heater 30 or 40 times larger to make even a "measurable" change in temperature. I could be wrong hopefully someone else will chime in. couple things you can do. you want to ANGLE that panel south and slightly tilted (the straighter the angel of sunlight to heater the more heat you will get) also spray paint the whole things insides including the tubing in high temp MATT black pain. shiny reflects more while MATT absorbs more. so matte black will absorb more heat. Good luck!

Nerys you are absolutely right. We had a 10,000 gal. Pool and we made the same system, 1 in. Black pipe about 100 feet of it all laid out. It was hooked into the main pump and we only saw about 1-2 degrees warmer in 100+ degree days. This was in west Texas so plenty of sun and it still was not great. His pupil looks to be 30-40,000 gal so that might give some perspective.

You should have done the tubes up and down, meaning instead of a circle go into the left side, run the tubes up and down and then out the other side. That would have made it flat all the way across. For the water volume, having the water going through it slower will allow it to heat the water more so don't worry about the small pump. In the end though I do think you need more capacity...maybe a 2nd board.
@samg2603

i’d suggest doubling your hose set up to further increase surface area, the black hose is fine but i’d recommend lining the inside of the box with aluminum foil or painting it white, making the box black heats up the box and not necessarily the hoses, also please get a battery reserve for your pump, with different voltages running through the pump all the time it’ll break pretty fast.. so make sure you run it at a constant voltage, for the day/night thing a day/night switch would work

well yes, but his way collects solar energy for the pump AND solar energy for the heating separately. So basically the heating is not that much limited by the solar panel (which has a shit efficiency, as solar panels do). Your way would be the best if he had infinite amounts of solar panels (and space to install them). Actually, it would be interesting to see what is more efficient: the panel or the black-pipe-heating thingy.

I did a solar water heater when I installed pool out of copper tube. It worked but ever so mildly, maybe 3 degrees difference. However when a rain came it was just like u started with a clean slate again. Maybe n Texas or Florida someone would have enough dry weather to work better. Btw for cost the black hose works well, I tried that after my copper burst one winter, lol. I would suggest from my own experience that you create a black holding tank before the heater, like 40 gallon plus. That way the water can get warmed then right before it returns to the pool it gets a final heating through tubing. Also you need at least double the size of tubing you have. Good luck

It worked at my house doing that. Circulating the water with a pump that was plumbed in when the water filter ran but had a shut off valve.

Put more hose coming out of the heating box, My dad did this when I was younger, All us kids that ended up in the pool loved it because the hose pumped out warm water even if the pool wasn't necessarily warm and that was fun to play with as well, balanced out the cold with the warm hose water, Our pool was much smaller though so in all it did actually make a difference to the pool temperature but the hose was also great with the warm water pumping out.

i'm making a solar boiler for a school project and we found that using glass instead of plexiglass makes a huge difference, just make sure the tubes can withstand the heat. An other group used glass in combination with pvc and tyleen, the tyleen got too hot and the tubing came loose. Yours should be okay since its one continuous loop and constantly has water running through it.

I think you best bet for keeping your pool warmer would to get a solar pool cover, Its not as cool or fun but works really well. Prevents heat loss through evaporation and warms over the entire surface area of the pool. Only issue is storing the cover with not in use, I'm in North SA and I have to pull mine off during the summer because the pool gets hot. I have some extra cut offs if you want to play around with it.

Need to scale that up a bit junior. Bigger diameter tubing, corrugated black for more surface area, and a larger sized panel. Use mylar in the back of the box and watch your temps rise

I think that heater will actually surprise people at how well it will work. They sell those for that specific reason and they work well. The only difference is the store sold ones have bigger hoses. If hed get bigger hoses and a big pump itd heat up the pool in one evening for night swimming.

Hey Matt, you may want to spread apart a bit more the pump and heated water outlet. Otherwise you might just be sucking back up your already heated water rather than the still cool pool water.

Matt, when I was a freshman physics major we made similar solar water heaters similar to yours. We heated a 55 gallon drum nicely. To heat a pool you will need a much larger surface area. The most effective way to solar heat a pool is a floating solar pool blanket. They work quite well up here in the north.

I suggest the outlet (hot/warm water) of the new solar heater be run to the bottom of the pool. Heat rises, cold sinks. If the hot coming out of the pipe comes in low on the pool it will be more effective than it pouring over the top of the water.

We have those pool heater setups on roofs all over in Las Vegas. One of the biggest things they share is that they don't reflect sunlight. You have shiny hose covered up by shiny Plexiglas. You should just spray paint the Plexiglas flat black. Any light reflection at all is wasted for your intended purpose.

Hey Matt, what about having a hot water reservoir being heated by your solar water heater. This would concentrate the heat before pumping it into the pool. A black barrel, like the chicken coop barrels would be great.

What you gotta know is how many gallons that will warm per hour and then notice your pool has a lot of water then realize that your pool will probably naturally cool down slightly faster than what that can heat up. You’ll need a bunch of those solar heaters to get a few degrees on a pool
