Some Basics... 1. The Photovoltaic (Solar) Panel, will deliver the Voltage, even in "half-sun", but not the full current. 1.1. So your Pump will run, but it won't have enough force to cycle sufficient amounts of water (according to your setup [ resistance, etc.]) 2. The Efficiency of Heat Transfer from the inner tube surface to the energy carrying medium (Water) is higher, the faster the medium travels. 2.2. Of course the larger the delta on energy (difference in temperature) the higher the efficiency as under 2. 3. Have a look at your Pump Data. Depending on the built and style of the rotor, there are different heights for pulling (sucking in the water) and pushing (pumping out the water). So you might be able to tweak the flow ratio by positioning the pump at a height, that improves flow, which helps with efficiency as mentioned in 2. again. 4. Don't put a metal sheet onto the coiled tubing, you'd only sacrifice surface area for capturing energy from the sun. 4.1. No! metal doesn't "get hotter", (so there's no gain to expect), it just feels hotter to the touch than Plastics, due to it's ability to transfer energy quicker, 5. If you're not a 100% sure about the Pump (remember it's not a specific pool pump!) and the powerline being sturdy and resistant enough for Kids, Dogs, Toys, and maybe chlorine or any other Chems in the Water, don't submerge it in the Pool! Keep your family and yourself safe and check three times if everything is utterly safe! Please! Would be a shame about Mere and the Kids, … yeah, about you too, … a bit… ;-P If you find spelling or grammar errors, you are allowed to keep them! Regards from a german electrical engineer, and have a good one. S.

PVC hose is good insulator, so the heat won't get to the water easily. But it is cheaper than say copper tube, if that is the point. Solar panel makes DC voltage, so it should be connected inside the pump instead of AC/DC convertor or get a DC/AC convertor to a normal plug.

@@jaydunbar7538 You need a conductive material not a dielectric material. Black is an energy pulling color so it'll heat up copper. That's why I suggest black 3.0 paint. I have a name If that doesn't work take a screw that best fits in there , put a small amount of adhesive in the hole of the screw ( the eye ? , I don't think I know that term ) and jam it in quickly and let it dry to harden . Try to normally pull it out by the chuck and it should come out attached to the screw . I did this trick when an earphone jack broke in my I pad and I couldn't get it out even with tweezers . I took the ink of a ballpoint pen , made sure it would fit over the piece stuck , took a bit of nail glue ( superglue ) and did this method .

Matt, 0.6A @ 120V is 72 watts, so you will need a solar panel that can produce not only 72 watts, but you also need to account for the losses including the inverter, so I would say you want at least 150 watt panel with 100 watt inverter.

Engineer here, I would double plexi glass the enclosure so it’s clear on bottom and top, and surround it by mirrors (concave as to direct the sunlight towards the bottom of the glass) in order to “cook” it from the bottom as well as receive sunlight from the top. As for the water pump, you want a 12V DC amazon pump since 12V works directly hooked up to a 12V solar panel and can vary in amperage which just changes the speed of the pump vs 120v (house mains) that needs a power inverter to run and needs 120V at all times (isn’t variable so less useful most of the time). If you have any questions I can gladly help you DM me, I can even send you some goodies to get you nicely started in an automated way ;)

Matt, cut that plexi-glass to fit down on the inside of your box, laying on top of the black coils. Then drill a couple of holes at opposite sides each and run a wood or metal dowel through the holes on one side to the other side to keep the glass tight to the coils. Good luck Matt!

As for making sure they don't move, zip ties or maybe some hot glue. If you want to power your pump with solar power you need to get a panel that's big enough and is able to output however much that pump needs. So a 12v pump would need a 12v capable panel.

Should buy 1/2" poly irrigation tubing. I just built a heater last week. Dripdepot has great prices on tubing. You can get 1000ft for like $110 and I got free shipping. Lowes and home depot charge like 90 bucks for 100 feet. I put a T fitting off my main pool pump outlet line and installed a ball valve to control flow. I also coiled the tubing on a pvc "x" with a four way connection in the middle. Built an 8'x8' box with corrugated plastic roofing to hold the heat in. I believe my total build cost was $200. Probably used 700 zip ties to connect to pvc and to tie to other tubes.

To keep your coiled hose tidy, attach the plexiglass to the box first (leave the bottom off of the box). Place the box plexiglass-down on your work surface and coil the hose. Once your hose is how you like it (you might need to leave it in sunlight to soften the hose and make it easier to coil), place the plywood backing directly on the hose and screw it into place. You'll end up with the coiled hose flush against the plexiglass without the need for any zipties or other stuff.

Matt you can use maybe some rocks below the hoses to radiate more heat up! Even if it’s cloudy should retain heat in rocks more then wood .

Coil the hose like you had it (tightly) and secure your plexiglass *DIRECTLY* on top of it.....touching it (rather than spaced a few inches above it)!! This will hold the hose securely in place as well as making for a smaller volume of air inside the box = higher internal heat! 👍😉

You could put a mirror on the bottom and and one way mirror on the top which would trap the sunlight making the box hotter.

It still won't heat that 25,000 plus gallon pool up unfortunately. I just showed my boss who has solar panels and sells heaters everyday. There's no way it's Going to pump heat into that pool might drop it by 2 degrees if that but not anymore and you can't control how much heat your getting even if it did work :(

Coil the tube as desired in the box, place the plexiglass on top of the plastic tube, secure the plexiglass at all four corners from accidentally falling out of the box. The plexiglass keeps the tubing from falling out/unraveling and the four corner fasteners(of your choice/construction) keep the plexiglass in place.

I'm no engineer but I'm slightly a genius. My first tip would be to put some black stone or tile, probably stone preferably on the bottom of the box (The inside) and set the hoses on top of that. What this should do is heat stone up while also heating your tubes, but if a cloud goes over the sun or whatever else, then the radiant heat being let off from the stone will continue to keep the hoses warm. Just like asphalt on a hot summer day, if you go outside maybe an hour or 2 after it's been dark and touch the asphalt it will still be plenty warm. Really any stone or concrete or if you could get asphalt that would be great, but as long as it's black to help absorb energy then it will do good. My 2nd tip would be to get what other people have said, a little water pump with a built in solar panel thing would be ideal so you know it'll work as advertised, I would check harborfrieght for something cheap just to see how it works and then upgrade later if you needed to. Now, you'll probably need a whole lot more surface area than that little box. I'm not an engineer like I mentioned before, so I'm not going to go into a whole bunch of numbers but that little pump maybe moves like 50 gallons an hour I would think at best, if you think your pool is probably around, 50 thousand gallons in it if I had to guess. So you'd have to let the pump run 1,000 hours straight to cycle the entire pool, which would be like a month and a half of continuous running. So I'm sure that's not enough to effectively heat the pool. So, you'll probably want a much bigger pump. Now here's my idea that would be really cool. So, you have a relatively large house, and also a very large barn. What you do is get a couple thousand feet of hose, and then late it in a very tight S pattern across the surface of your roof on the house or the barn, or even both. The asphalt shingles on your roof will heat up very hot in the sunlight, and so will the metal roof on the barn. This will make that water very hot, possibly close to scolding on a hot day. What you want to make sure you do though, is run the hose that's coming off of the pump to the peak of the house, and then run the hose down the roof from there, if you try to have a little pump push all the water up the roof I don't think it will work very well, this way it's actually going to be like a siphon because all of the suction of the water running down the roof will help draw water up to the peak. The hardest part of this is getting the hose to and from the pool in a nice looking fashion. It's like your chicken coop water system but way cooler and better. I think this will get you enough surface area to actually heat the pool up and the best part is other than the hose and pump it's pretty much free because you don't need a box to hold the hose and such. To sum it up for those people that don't like reading. Get a bunch of hose, run it across the roof of the house and or the barn, let the solar energy heat it up there and then cycle it back down into the pool which will give more than enough surface area of hose to actually heat the pool. Upvote this if you want to see it done.

It works but it takes a lot. We use 200' of 1 1/4" poly strung around the yard and a big submersible pump to heat up a 16' above ground pool and it takes a couple days but it doesn't get as hot here in Montana and it gets cooler at night.

Make the wood frame shallower to just the thickness of the tubing and just use the plexiglass/polycarbonate sheet to sandwich the tubing. For the pump you can get a cheap solar charging controller, 300 watt power inverter, and a marine battery. Then mount the electronics in a Apache case from harbor freight.

Hey Matt! I don't really have a lot of experience with solar panels, but i do work as an electrician in Norway. I think it would have been a good idea to make a box to hold a car battery and charge it up using a solar panel on top. To make this work you would have to also buy a 12V pump. (i dont think it's possible to get enough voltage out of a normal solar panel to make it work on an 120v pump. Then you would have to wire several solar panels in series.) This way you could also install a switch on the side of the box to run the pump when you wanted to, or photocell switch to make it run by itself when it is bright outside. As far as organising the tubes, i really liked the other suggestions here in the comments about using flexseal to glue them in the box. If you like this idea like the comment so Matt can see it. :) (sorry for any misspelling)

My opinion. If about halfway down that box, cut a slot around the edge for the plexiglass. If you lave too much room, the hose will come out again and then be between the plexiglass and the top of the box - have it press it into place almost. This will also keep a warm air pocket close to the hose and help heat. I know someone who uses a system like this and it works fairly well. It's not going to heat your whole pool in an hour, but it will work. Free energy baby! As for the solar - get a battery, It will charge, then run the pump off of that, it will cover off the low periods and charge even on a cloudy day (not as well as direct sunlight but it will still charge). Panel -> battery -> pump.
